Help us Swtor Devs, you are our only hope...

Recommended Posts

Starfighter, in my opinion, is one of the most underrated game modes in this title. Is there any hope at all that we might see a new map...or dare I say...new game styles (capture the flag, pvp escort). The only thing this section of Starfighter needs is more content. Thank you.

Until they write a very few lines of code to include HOTAS (controller) support, this is only going to be the second rate mini-game that it currently is now. Real combat flight sim players won't go near it except for afk/suicide resource and currency runs. For the record, the Hero engine has support controllers for about a decade. It wouldn't take much for the devs to include it natively.

This topic has been discussed at length a long time ago in this thread:

The bottom line is that it is not possible to implement both HOTAS style controllers and mouse and keyboard without giving one or the other an advantage. All SWTOR players have mouse and keyboard, many SWTOR players do not have flight controller setups. If you make GSF a HOTAS game, you will exclude a substantial portion of players.

Just to expound on what Erannov wrote, I lobbied heavily for joystick controls when GSF was in beta based on my extensive experience with SWG's "Jump to Lightspeed," but the time for adding joysick support has passed. Despite what was written above, its hardly "a very few lines of code," it's a complete re-write of the control scheme. We've seen that adding Weapon Outfit Designer breaks the seemingly unrelated Operation Boss AoE attacks, and hotfixing that breaks player AoE DoT spreads. I've learned one can never over estimate the work involved in adding a feature unless we can safely presume its a number somewhere in an Excel spreadsheet. The gimballed nature of primary weapons in GSF really makes joystick control quite problematic, and one need only consider multiplayer POB ships and their turrets from JtL to realize the problems.

I'd much rather see effort directed towards:

  • bringing in the Stealth ships originally envisioned
  • creating new maps/game modes
  • new skins for existing ship types
  • more things to spend fleet comms and requisition on, such as decorations and outfits
  • more customization options for ships, and not just paint jobs/color schemes/blaster colors/engine colors, but kits which allow you to separate engine appearance from the chosen component, or weapon appearance. For example, I personally dislike the visual appearance of Burst Laser Cannons on Imperial Sting scouts, and would prefer the blasters have a customizable look

and not necessarily in that order. Don't get me wrong, I'd benefit from dusting off my Saitek X52 to use in GSF, but I just believe the time and resources of our threadbare development team are better directed elsewhere. Just look at the rollout of 7.0-7.0.2a and then tell me with a straight face "its a very few lines of code, easy to implement."

Until they write a very few lines of code

tell me you've never written any code in your life without saying you've never done it

As alluded to already, anything as large as an MMO is going to be very, very complex. There is no way this would be a simple thing to add (even outside of GSF) or they probably would have done it for Steam.

This thread was linked above, but I'm linking it again: https://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?t=926753

Seriously. Go read it.
