PC = Player Character

Zakuul can act as a lesson learned for the PC. Especially for a Sith, It makes no sense that the PC wouldn't aim for the Sith throne/ultimate power seeing as the PC can be the most Powerful force user in the known galaxy. Once the PC is established as de facto ruler, the stories can proceed with the PCs being active hands on tropes, like Elric of Melnibone, King Arthur, or Elessar (who has a few more adventures after the LOTR trilogy). So the literary precedent exists, would make sense, and amend the confusing power gap created by the Zakull misadventure. As for non force users, they can have ultimate political power using force sensitives to keep the others in line. Moreover, the PC can stay in the position of power for as long as the game goes on, there are hundreds upon hundreds of years until the Empire finally dies off in the timeline.

Eh, if you want to lead the faction, go play Master of Orion. That's what folks like Acina and Saresh (or whoever replaced Saresh...forget their name) do. The PC is really barely even the "leader" of the Alliance in practice (heck, at present in the game, the potential exists that the PC is secretly fighting against the Alliance). If anything, the best scenario would be to knock our characters back down a few pegs to better tell an ongoing story about them again, like they were up through SoR. But that'd be very difficult to do from a gameplay stanpoint, given how many mechanical systems are based around "the Alliance".
