The first and most obvious class would be Consular but I don't want to be a Jedi. I'd rather be a civilian and use blasters if needed. I thought maybe Smuggler/Trooper. What would be the best option here?

For an *ambassador*, the only one that makes sense is the Consular.

 

For a *politician* (an ambassador is a *diplomat*, and not automatically, as such, a politician(1)), it's harder to say, except that Consular *isn't* right. Perhaps Trooper as a sort of Eisenhower-like figure.

 

For pure-play RP, it doesn't matter.

 

EDIT: re: Trooper - perhaps with a Smuggler-type Combat Style so you carry one or two blasters instead of an HBG or PLR.(2)

 

(1) In some countries, ambassadors are almost 100% political, but in others, they are career civil servants in the diplomatic corps of their country. The appointment might be politically motivated, but they are nevertheless civil servants rather than politicians.

Ambassador for empire: Agent

 

Politician for republic: Consular

Politician for empire: Inquisitor

Inquisitor: "I AM the senate" ....
