First off, I'm a fairly new player with an active subscription since Sep 2012. So this means I don't have unlimited funding for gear, mods etc for improvements.
This may sound like a rant but really it's not, it's an initial observation of this "tank" class & a request for advice.
I play mostly solo, the grouping options in this game leave a lot to be desired imo, but that's a different topic...
I've managed to play a Jedi Knight Guardian to 47 & doing the missions on Voss.
Current stats,
Health: 11555
Armor Rating: 5657
Damage Reduction: 41.68%
Defense Chance: 20.98%
I've maxed all the options in the Defense skill tree except for 3 non-def related skills in that section, Hilt Strike, Solidified Force & Victory Rush. I even maxed Single Saber Mastery in the Vigilance (Damage) skill tree in the pursuit for the most defense for this class.
At this level I'm finding out my Jedi Knight Guardian will get her *** handed to her if jumped by 2 or more "strongs" even when supported by a healing Doc companion.
Due to the long cool downs Saber Ward & Warding Call defenses are basically a joke for average foe encounters. I normally use those 2 coupled with Heroic Moment and Enure as emergency defensive powers in case I'm jumped by a roaming mob or for harder fights vs elite or better mobs..
For years I've extensively played "tank" class types in other MMO's in both solo and group/raiding type situations so I do know what I'm observing when it comes to "tank" gameplay. From my experience a "tank" should be able to get the agro of all mobs in range, soak up damage all day long from the average encounters & not put out much dps, they're supposed to be "meat shields" after all. Unlike a Jedi Knight Guardian that relies heavily on mob control with dps to get through encounters.
Following advice from other players in game I've concentrated primarily on endurance and armor to equip this toon as she advances through the levels.
I was also told that Jedi Consular Shadows & Trooper Vanguards make decent tanks in SWTOR, I'll give those 2 tank types a shot next. So far I'm not seeing overly impressive "tanking" with a Guardian.
