Developer Blog: Welcome to the Community
Welcome to the first official Star Wars™: The Old Republic™ (TOR) BioWare Blog. This section will be used by various team members from Star Wars: The Old Republic team to tell you a little bit about themselves; some of their tasks and responsibilities on TOR, what they like to do in their free time, and other interests. Everyone here plays a vital role to the development of the game and we want to give you the opportunity to get to know everyone better.

In this first installment, I'm going to tell you a little bit about some of the people you'll be interacting within the TOR community.

First we have Robert ‘Jedi Rob’ Chestney who is a Senior Writer and has been with BioWare since early 2006. Before moving over to the Community Team, Rob worked on the Design team, developing the setting and backstory for the game as well as the storyline for one of the character classes. Prior to BioWare, Rob worked as a Producer and Writer at CNN where he worked on many projects including an Emmy Award winning newscast.

Next we have Amy Crider, a recent addition to the BioWare family and the Community Team. Amy has worked in the game development industry for over five years in many capacities; from creating In-Game Events to Customer Service and then to Community Management.

And finally, there is me. I’ve been working in the game development industry now for over eight years and prior to that, I was in the U.S. Marine Corps (Semper Fi!). I started off in community management, did double duty in community and game system design for a few years, and now I’m back fully into community management. Back at home.

As with everyone else here, I am a huge Star Wars fan. Working on this game with LucasArts, working at BioWare, and being able to work alongside such a talented and experienced development team… it’s definitely a dream come true.

We at BioWare have four core values that help shape our company and products: Quality in our Workplace, Quality in our Products, Entrepreneurship, and a Commitment to doing it all in a context of Humility and Integrity. I bring this up because I know all of you have numerous questions about the project, many of which we cannot answer at this time. The reason for this is simple. We only want to give you, our fans, fair and accurate information. We don’t want to tell you how we want something to work; we want to tell you how something does work. So, until a system is working as intended or a feature is fully implemented, we will rarely discuss it.

If you have any questions or feedback for us, feel free to post it in the forums. This is an area for the community as a whole to interact and collaborate.

May the Force be with you…

Sean

Watching trailers over and over I'm curious what the largest team fights are in instances. We saw sith and bounty hunter taking down a padawan and jedi knight but just how big (epic) will fights get. The idea of raid style 24 or 52 man content would simply be insane for this game! At the same time group content would be limited to how many (6 or so?)

The best part of this game concept is holding people accountable for their actions. The idea that killing the wrong people or in the sith case always the right people (they had it coming) will directly chance how you can level. This could totally blow same old xp grind out of the water for EQ / WoW players. Cant wait to try this out!! Keep up the great work guys.

One of my concerns is the farmer issue that pretty much all MMOs end up having. I would love to hear how Bioware plans to keep the farmers (both gold farmers and botters) from taking over the game.

Mon, 10/05/2009 - 10:26

The farmers and botters are certainly a serious issue in all MMO's these days. Also, a very closely related issue is the "Gold Seller" sites that drop a key logger on your system so that once you make a purchase and enter game they get your account logon info then clean you out. Having up to date Virus, Malware and Adware detection rules helps individuals stay safe but is not a guarantee. Is there really anything that can be done by developers to stop these issues that is not prohibitively expensive to implement?

Sun, 10/04/2009 - 19:39

Mm it's a tricky subject, normaly a don't minde the farmers but I dont like the idea of somebody making money out of a in game economy based on farmers. The idea of playing a MMO is to start for the botom an work your way up not to buy your way to the top. But how knows maybe it's youst me how thinks that it's beter to earn your way then to pay it.

WooW! Awesome! That is some great work you done on you tube.

Fri, 09/25/2009 - 16:41

Hi everybody!

The other day i read a comment on this site of someone who talked about a player smuggler hunt by a bounty hunter. I think it’s a great idea. There should be a bounty system based on the choice of each player. Depending on the choice they make, they could end up on a bounty list. That list should be accessible by the bounty hunter to see if the character is online and what is the reward. Of course the higher the character is the higher the reward. It would be like a list of the most wanted character in the galaxy. It would be a nice touch for the pvp side of this MMO.

Fri, 09/25/2009 - 02:27

so this isnt gunna come out for like a year? damn. So did they put a price on it yet?

Thu, 09/24/2009 - 17:09

Hi everybody! I'm really excited about this game, but i still have some worries. Since it's an MMO i hope there will be a unique caracter creation. I mean, i hope we'll be able create a really unique looking caracter with many different races and appearances. I'm talking about unique caracter traits, many armor set and diffent colors. Cause it would be boring if every sith warrior look alike. I'm a Guild wars fan, and the best part is the customization of the look of your caracter... As I always to my in-game friend... It's all about the look!

Tue, 09/15/2009 - 21:28

Hi dudes. its my first time here and i have some questions.

someone knows something about the races in the game...
and...

hay alguien por ahi de españa???

Wed, 09/09/2009 - 13:05

anyone know when it comes out?

Fri, 08/28/2009 - 13:34

I have an idea that i would like to post but not sure if I should just post it on the blog or if i should e-mail it in?

Mon, 08/24/2009 - 05:07

so has any side start to build their army yet??

Mon, 08/10/2009 - 14:55

If this game is going to be on PC, will there be a Toolset option? I doubt it, but that would be cool. Making your own SW adventures sounds fun. Also, I think that the Naboo Gungans should be a playable race. (Able to use those shield things that deflect blaster bolts.) Who agrees that a Gungan would make a great jedi?

Sat, 08/08/2009 - 21:41

Yes, I am extremely excited for this game. Like most here, I am also a huge fan of Bioware. I played nwn, nwn2, Jade Empire, KOTOR, and Baldur's Gate. It will be interesting to see Bioware make a mmo. I hope that there is a lot of freedom in this game. I dislike it when you are forced to do a quest that doesn't fit with your character's class/personality. You should be able to choose a different way to accomplish a goal or task. Also, I would enjoy having the ability to purchase swoop bikes/speeders in game. It would be cool to browse different vehicles and parts.
May the force guide you, Bioware.

Wed, 08/12/2009 - 03:27

Alright, lol edgeorge, they are not "controlled/played" by people, they are all just voiced by the people, they have programmings and all that other stuff, but instead of other MMOs, were u read a quest objective, ect or everyone has the same voice, in TOR, everyone is Voiced differently, not "played" just voiced

Sun, 08/09/2009 - 13:20

Hey I don't really get it! How can there be stories in an MMO if a fat kid from Bahamas calls you n00b? How could this surpass KotOR?
Anyway I wanted to ask: Are all the people who appear in this game actually controlled by another person? Let's say I'm in a battle, or a shootout, and I meet a hundred Republic troops. So they're all actual people?!

Cause if that's true, then how will battles be? If I'm a Jedi, for instance,
how will I be able to kill a thousand troops in a ground battle with my powers if they're all real people?

Plz reply!

Sean just make sure TOR is not like WOW or SWG. We want to enjoy playing in star wars universe. I loved KOTOR and KOTOR 2. I played FFXI 3.5 years and WOW only 2 days because I didn't like it. I like the developers comments on story being a part of this game. I love pretty much everything that I heard about game so far.

I have faith in Bioware.

Wed, 09/16/2009 - 08:59

i think this is going to be like WoW and games like that... i dont know if here we are going to have the posibility of make good sesions of role playing...

maybe we have to create a comunity to save the role players

Sat, 08/15/2009 - 16:54

first of all, what is w.o.w. and s.w.g.?

Mon, 07/27/2009 - 10:36

much needs to be done about mmo's ... its almost starting to become stereotypical.. when you mention mmo in a title you generally think about countless hours spent at the screen running from point A to point B to get some stupid rock or bracelet.. or mashing the keyboard and constantly tapping a mouse button to kill some weak swamp monster or bloody bat...dynamics of a mmo must be changed in order to draw different types of crowds... there has always been a clear line drawn between f2p and p2p (free to play and pay to play) and many see it as pointless to even attempt to climb the ranks because some rich prick can just buy his way to the top... this is wrong.. we need a game where the playing field is even.. this game is either going to be the graetest thing that has graced my screen.. or just another galaxies... im so anxious to find out....

Thu, 07/09/2009 - 16:26

loved bioware since my friend intorduced me to MDK... and i havent found a bad game by 'em... gotta say im really lookin forward to swtor.

Fri, 07/03/2009 - 13:21

Bioware is really one of my faves
Loved baldurs gate, neverwinter nights, KoToR 1 and loved jade empire... too bad I never played mass effect (since I dont own a 360, but a ps3)
And SWTOR looks really promising, fun and I think it will give some nice competition to the ruling MMO's these days.

I'll stay tuned to SWTOR!

Wed, 07/01/2009 - 17:40

It would also be cool if there were houses to buy on this game. To keep cool items we find... and to make it feel like a secret hideout or headquarters.

Wed, 07/01/2009 - 17:37

It would be cool if you could have your own space ship and was able to give it a cool name.

Sun, 06/14/2009 - 17:43

I am so anxious that I can barely wait for this game. I will be a Sith Lord and crush those puny Jedi like the little bugs they are.

Join the dark side of the force, who said that we are the bad guys?

Thu, 06/18/2009 - 23:01

Us Galactic Republic guys in the Order of the White Eagles fear no pathetic Sith threats considering their unfullfillment. We shall the terminate the Sith scum as they are. Join the White Eagles on Tyton, a group that will not let you down!! We promise to hunt down anyone that trys to attack our members.

There is no Dark Side, nor a Light Side
There is Only the Force
I will do what I must to keep the balance
The balance is what keeps me together
There is no good without evil, but evil must not be allowed to flourish
There is passion, Yet peace
Serenity, Yet emotion
Chaos, yet order
I am the wielder of the flame, the protector of balance
I am the holder of the torch, lighting the way
I am the keeper of the flame, soldier of balance
I am a guardian of balance
I am a Gray Jedi

Mon, 06/08/2009 - 18:05

somthing that has always anoyed me in MMO's is that there's always those mssions that requier u to run for 20 minuts for somthig stpid like an egg. i saw a speeder bike in one of the videos we need speeder's to get from point A to B fast.(also it would be fun)

Tue, 06/16/2009 - 02:27

I agree also, it would be nice to have a speeder and if not a speeder at least a mount or some kind of power like for the Jedi and Sith, Force speed and for others, sprint or increased run speed.

Fri, 06/05/2009 - 23:44

i just set up my account and i was curious will there be a console version of this game???

Thu, 06/25/2009 - 19:20

I agree they should make a mount.

Tue, 06/16/2009 - 02:26

It's not comfirmed or denied, you'll have to wait like the rest of us, but I do not think they will make a console version of this.

Fri, 06/05/2009 - 05:38

One thing I really respect about Blizzard (The masterminds behind WoW) is the fact that they don't tell you something that isn't true or that they haven't done yet, and they also don't let a game or patch out that isn't finished ready to play. Bioware sets the same standard. I have great respect for a company that will delay the release of a game in order to make absolutely sure their game is done right. Bioware has impressed me with Mass Effect and the first KotOR game (If only they had done KotOR 2, it would have been done right and would have been finished) and I couldn't be happier with what they have done so far.

Tue, 06/02/2009 - 17:32

So when did they decide to make this a MMO game? Is it gonna be anything like the KOTOR games?? If it's more like WOW i'll be choked!!! Like first you buy the game then it'll cost u how much a month just to keep it going...does anyone have the answers for me..lol

Sun, 05/24/2009 - 03:02

Hmmmm i wonder about the requirements to play this game i honestly don't care
on how much money i will be expending, for the sake of playing this game i would do a lot of things not necessarily seen as good in our society

Fri, 06/19/2009 - 17:58

If your not lookin to pay for an mmo you will have to settle with, i think its Everquest but im not sure

Wed, 05/06/2009 - 21:56

I can't wait for this to come out :D IT WILL BE GOOD

Sun, 05/03/2009 - 20:40

for people wondering how you play well it hasnt come out yet duh and when it doese they will email you so youll know but its not gunna be soon its coming out in like 2010 or late 2009 or at max 2011 o i hope it isnt in 2011

Tue, 06/16/2009 - 02:28

2011? I don't think fans will wait that long for a game like this.

Wed, 05/06/2009 - 08:57

If you wanna know, i think that the more time the team spends on the game the better, since it is intended to become the biggest RPG game ever and since the competition is great, it should be a good idea not to release it any time soon. To tell the truth i don't want any bugs.

Sun, 04/26/2009 - 19:38
