In this first installment, I'm going to tell you a little bit about some of the people you'll be interacting within the TOR community.
First we have Robert ‘Jedi Rob’ Chestney who is a Senior Writer and has been with BioWare since early 2006. Before moving over to the Community Team, Rob worked on the Design team, developing the setting and backstory for the game as well as the storyline for one of the character classes. Prior to BioWare, Rob worked as a Producer and Writer at CNN where he worked on many projects including an Emmy Award winning newscast.
Next we have Amy Crider, a recent addition to the BioWare family and the Community Team. Amy has worked in the game development industry for over five years in many capacities; from creating In-Game Events to Customer Service and then to Community Management.
And finally, there is me. I’ve been working in the game development industry now for over eight years and prior to that, I was in the U.S. Marine Corps (Semper Fi!). I started off in community management, did double duty in community and game system design for a few years, and now I’m back fully into community management. Back at home.
As with everyone else here, I am a huge Star Wars fan. Working on this game with LucasArts, working at BioWare, and being able to work alongside such a talented and experienced development team… it’s definitely a dream come true.
We at BioWare have four core values that help shape our company and products: Quality in our Workplace, Quality in our Products, Entrepreneurship, and a Commitment to doing it all in a context of Humility and Integrity. I bring this up because I know all of you have numerous questions about the project, many of which we cannot answer at this time. The reason for this is simple. We only want to give you, our fans, fair and accurate information. We don’t want to tell you how we want something to work; we want to tell you how something does work. So, until a system is working as intended or a feature is fully implemented, we will rarely discuss it.
If you have any questions or feedback for us, feel free to post it in the forums. This is an area for the community as a whole to interact and collaborate.
May the Force be with you…
Sean

OOOOH Can't Wait!! This is going to be harder than waiting for christmas at age 8!!! BIOWARE RULES! |
Yes, I am extremely excited for this game. Like most here, I am also a huge fan of Bioware. I played nwn, nwn2, Jade Empire, KOTOR, and Baldur's Gate. It will be interesting to see Bioware make a mmo. I hope that there is a lot of freedom in this game. I dislike it when you are forced to do a quest that doesn't fit with your character's class/personality. You should be able to choose a different way to accomplish a goal or task. Also, I would enjoy having the ability to purchase swoop bikes/speeders in game. It would be cool to browse different vehicles and parts. |
Alright, lol edgeorge, they are not "controlled/played" by people, they are all just voiced by the people, they have programmings and all that other stuff, but instead of other MMOs, were u read a quest objective, ect or everyone has the same voice, in TOR, everyone is Voiced differently, not "played" just voiced |
Hey I don't really get it! How can there be stories in an MMO if a fat kid from Bahamas calls you n00b? How could this surpass KotOR? Cause if that's true, then how will battles be? If I'm a Jedi, for instance, Plz reply! |
loved bioware since my friend intorduced me to MDK... and i havent found a bad game by 'em... gotta say im really lookin forward to swtor. |
Bioware is really one of my faves I'll stay tuned to SWTOR! |
gonna be awesome also don't care if everyone can be a jedi because its just another class. Balance is a key thing in games now they aren't going to give you 7 classes and then make the jedi or sith classes able to pwn everyone it will be balanced and sure jedi can do things that other classes can't but other classes will exceed at doing there own things 2 and when it comes down to pvp im sure that there won't be one class that can just kill everything it will come down to player skill.....I hope 0xxxxx}===============> |

Sounds good, but i hope and pray that this game does not follow the path of world of warcraft and star wars galaxies in any way. I hate cookie cutter templates that force you to put skill points in skills that you are not going use,and like world of warcraft, the over sized weapons are to childish.Reminds me of the weapons in star wars legos. a game i may like if i were 6 years of age. I hope that we can fly our ships on planets and land them on the planets surface if the star ports are full or if we plan to land on a planet by stealth or if we are shot down and need to make an emergency landing on a near by planet. I also hope that we can land our ships on space stations and other star cruisers in space to do missions/quest in space or just to land on them to try and take them over.I hope that this game will go all the way with the star wars experience and not part of the way like most online games. Bioware, please do not give us a carbon copy of every online game out there! Give us something unique! Something that looks and feels like a real star wars game. Give us something unlike sony's S.W.G. There game looks like star wars, but does not feel like it where a jedi is but nothing a profession and is easy to kill. if Jedi in the movies were like the ones in S.W.G. The galaxy would still be in chaos and every other profession would save the galaxy and not the Jedi who are supposed to be the elite of the elite or they would not be the keepers of peace and justice! Give the character's real like skills that you would see in the movies not some generic garbage. Keep up the good work and i hope that i get the real Star wars experience and feel in S.W.T.O.R that S.W.G has failed to do because of there constant combat revamps. S.W.G pre-cu un-nerfed was the closest thing to getting right! |

Im hoping to see everything from the other 2 games and possibly old empire technology |

people wonder how bioware does it's thing so well. I'll say this, that focus on humility and integrity ensures a daily operation with the focus on the overall goal, not individual desires. Impressive. Has been, and always will be. |

I Look Foward To reliving some epic lightsaber battles |
Someone herd my cry for help when i put my xbox controler down after finishing Kotor 2 and saying "man if that was an MMO...", the day this comes out WoW is going out the window. |
I am so happy that you decided to crate MMO like this...I love stories about Star wars ..I read and listen some videos and titles and It´s wonderful what you are trying to do with charakters stories bcs there is only a little chance to be like someone else and I am thankful to the Bioware team..good idea and i hope that good job too :) |
of course.... if you dont involve the community with systems and concepts before they are completed.... if the community hates them, your only response can be "well, F* you, community. It's our game, we'll make it how we want." |
Integrity and humility... right. |
awesome |
EPIC! |
BioWare has not disappointed! Keep up the work! |
Sounds like some great talent and focused workers from BioWare will be working on SWTOR being a huge success! Can't wait! Been waiting a loooooooonnnnng time to hear about this and now holding my breath for release date and hopefully a chance to Beta Test. |

I've found my new game. |
AllllllllRighhhhtttttyyyyy Then. |

Dude love the ideas... totally agree with everything you say. Really love the idea of not having everyone run around with "the next-best-quest-won-weapon" it should be customizable... (but their is a limit to customization so best of luck Bioware) thanks for making this game... cant wait til it comes out |
Well i think u guys did a good job when chosing the old republic becuase there were Jedi and Sith everyware so that means it wont be uncommon to see a sith running around some planet killing stuff i cant wait till the game comes out. |
Please, don't forget to include a good economist on the dev team! |

To BIOWARE: May I start with Semper Fi. Glad to see you are in charge of this creation. May the Force guide you in the this creation. I do have a few thoughts to share with you. One of the biggest talks I see and problems with SWG was the discussion of how powerful jedi should be. Well I hope you all are trying to make this game as realistic to Star Wars as possible. There is no game that has more potential than this. You have range fighting, melee fighting, mystical style fighting, endless crafting, tons of options for player controlled buildings, pet options and creature handling, speeder racing, and you have land, air, see, and space. Best of luck. Just some food for thought! Best of luck with production. |
Well they could put up a Academy with tests, but we shall see when the game comes out. |

While I agree here that Jedi should not be made into a starter class, I believe jedi should not be playable at all by players. I realize this would completely drive away some people, as jedi and star wars go together like peas in a pod. The problem here is that Jedi are either a starter profession and then the majority of the player base chooses to be a jedi, instead of the other options, assuming there are other options, OR jedi are unlocked and are alpha like SWG where we run into the problem of them being ALPHA. I realize this is a perfect game for jedi to be a starter profession but lets think about this logically for a moment. We don't want everyone running around with a glowstick like it is in SWG currently do we? While jedi should be a common place in KOTOR as the time line states I believe they should not be player characters and instead Devs or NPC's. As no matter how you run the scenario you run into major problems. UNLESS you choose one of two options which are; This is all irrelevent though as we have no idea how this game will work its mechanics etc etc etc... |
When I read such opinion my stomach disappears so I won't puke, How can you say that jedi should not be a playable class? What is there to Star Wars more than running with a lightsaber and abusing force plus a good story. As to the balance, I'm sure the devs will not let us down with this one. As in life, the formula is the same with star wars, force user use the force and lightsabers, bounty hunters use rockets and jet engines on their backs, so thats close combat vs long range, I mean how far can it go other than to fully rely on the players skill? Not far. |
What if they have the story mode work like Guild Wars. That is to say that if your playing against the environment, or doing the story ark, your group (whether friends that you invite, or the NPCs that are in your group) embark on the mission without any outside interference. You wouldn't have to worry about a bunch of over populated Jedi or Sith until you got to the cities or outside of the story arc and it would encourage other specialty classes. Just an idea, not necessarily for or against it, but would like feedback. |
If they took away the ability to start as a jedi, more than 70 percent of the people excited about playing this game would be heart broken. Thats what every star wars fan wants, the ability to be a jedi and wield a lightsaber! Now i dont know how many classes they are going to make, but im sure if they make others than jedi, that you can have YOUR cake, and all us "glowstick" crazed fans can have ours too. ; ) |
Ok, fact is, Force sensitives should not be a starter class because people take a look at the classes and say "OMG THEY HAVE A GLOW STICK, IM GONNA CHOOSE THAT ONE" when really it shouldnt be like that. Force sensitive should be something you unlock in the game later on by speaking to a certain NPC after doing a certain number of things. Or another way of doing it is starting off as a Force sensitive and then doing trials for a long time in an academy. However i still agree that they shouldnt be overpowered like in SWG because this wouldnt be fair on players who want to play other classes and it would also cause a bad balance of power in the game which will lead to downfall like in SWG. :) |
Let's do a comparison between Master Wardians points and Darth Revens, shall we? 1. One of them possesses correct grammar Now, which one do you think makes the better argument? |
if you do that it wont sell this isn't swg and i don't plan on making a Jedi at all so plz don't speak for the community as a whole some of us are Han Solo fans he was way cooler then Luke |
I agree with Master Wardian, I played SWG and played a commando. It was one of the best MMO experiences I had ever had, while Jedi on the other hand, reminded me of a Warrior from WoW. It was a pity that Jedi were made a starting class as it completely blew all the other unique classes out of the water for most people. I am looking forward to which classes will be added to TOR. However, i hope they dont add the Entertainer... That was pointless. Droid Characters would be cool too, just saying... |
I've seen alot of people posting about having jedi as a starter class and justifying it with "jedi were common during this time period". While i agree jedi were common it doesn't mean it should be a starter class, where everyone and their aunt is a jedi and i know that some people would choose a non jedi character im almost positive that 95% of the community would be jedi and this would suck majorly as it did in SWG and would undoubtedly be this games great downfall. Jedi should have to be unlocked like pre NGE SWG and in the first KOTOR, this would make the game great as it would give people somthing to work towards and not make everyone the same class. so please take this into consideration. |
entertainer was somwhat pointless but female players enjoyed them and did thier social thing in the cantinas as for me i liked it, it was fun to walk into a packed cantina foll of dancin girls chattin it up lol smilez |

Please tell me SOE is not going to be running this? The screwed up SWG so bad and run it into the ground. |
i agree with you darthres swg took up so much power to run and was just way to complex for beginnners. I would love to be a toydarian jedi master(toydarians for people who don't know are watto's species) that just fly around. |
I've just found out that the Austin Studio Developing this is a whole new dev team made up of SOE and ilk dev's lol, no wonder it looks and sounds like ***** so far. so much for the KotOR team doing it  |
SWTOR u are my hope for MMOG!!! |
Onto the mmo aspect of the game. I don't know about a lot of you, but I can't afford most mmorpgs. I would force myself to be able to afford this one (most likely), but my vote is for either free (like guild wars (again don't hate me)) so that all can afford it (and many more will come play it experiencing the awesomeness that is star wars) or... and the much more preferred option- PAY AS YOU GO UNTIL A CERTAIN AMOUNT PLAN! - developers are you listening? This is the best of both worlds. Those who don't play as much can still play because they don't have to pay for the months they don't play, and those who play a lot don't have to pay more than the regularly priced amount of $15 for an mmorpg. This way money is still being collected to help make the game better. Again, my thoughts to make this game so much more... how shall we put it... awesome! |
Free MMOs Suck. The money to add to their content and constantly update things within them is not there. You can't spend revenu from other games that the company has and will make to support the upkeep of an MMO. It would never survive. It's a simple concept of overhead. Servers, electricity to power those servers, maintenance, environmental cooling, internet connection fees, replacement parts, Part updates, server expansion, debug programming, purchase of lisences for operating systems and monitoring software required for anything to run ON the server. All this requires money and in order to fund residual expenditures requires a residual income dedicated to the upkeep of the MMO. Without this dedicated income, the MMO will eventually fall into ruin. If the company does not choose to shut down the MMO completely, eventually it may even cause the company to begin suffering net losses at the end of every preceeding fiscal year. |
I love mmo's and I love star wars. Because of this I really want this one to be done right! I still really enjoy SWG (don't hate me) only because it is in the star wars universe! You all must remember this. This is the only thing so far that we can interact as characters in the Star Wars universe, and now we are being given a better opportunity to enjoy it! I'm not saying SWG was a game that was wonderfully made and the gameplay was fantastic, but I'm saying that SWTOR has much more potential, especially with not having to be limited to the Star Wars Universe of the Imperials as we know it. |
Like everyone else is saying, this game is going to be great if they go through with it on the xbox like I've herd from some of the other users. Do any of you guys remember that game called "Fantasy Star Online" that game was like the diablo 2 of the xbox, it really was creative and i thuroughly enjoyed playing it. If this game makes it to anything close to something like that, with what all the staff is talking about on youtube, that will, by itself be worth more then your dollar it seems almost. Phantasy star came with online fee's along with xbox live and it was still popular. |
i still play swg as well just cause i cant stand not being able to play a star wars game while one is still out i don't care for it much i miss it in its old incarnation but until tor comes out it will have to do . i love star wars it was the very first movie i ever got to see on the big screen (empire strikes). back been in love with the story every since i would like to finally see an MMO with the adults who were old enough to see the first three movies as they came out , in mind |
