Working for BioWare and on Star Wars™: The Old Republic™ specifically, stands as one of the proudest achievements of my career and my life. I’m actually still pinching myself, wondering how I got here. I’ll try to tell you the story, but to be honest; I have to think it was some act of divine intervention, because it still seems too good to be true.
Like a lot of you probably, I played every video game I could get my hands on as a kid, everything from Pong to Pitfall, and of course all the good early RPGs like Zork, Akalabeth, Ultima, … the list goes on. Somehow, I wound up taking a break from video games during my college years (I had to get some work done… if you can call it that). Fortunately, though, my escape from gaming turned out to simply be an extended hiatus. One day, after graduating from school and starting my career at CNN, I picked up a collection of the old Dungeons and Dragons-based gold box games for PC (Pool of Radiance, Curse of the Azure Bonds, etc.). I thought I’d enjoy playing through these classics once again in my spare time; I thought it would just be a casual pastime for my evenings. On one of the discs in that collection, though, I discovered the demo version of Baldur’s Gate. I think I played the demo for about ten minutes before rushing out to buy the game. I then retreated to my basement during every free moment for about a month, until I had played through Baldur’s Gate about two or three times. My gaming started back up full throttle after that. Eventually, I had to learn a little restraint, and spend a little more time with my family, but I stayed committed to my rediscovered favorite form of entertainment. Since then, I’ve played through every single BioWare game from start to finish as soon as I could get my hands on it. I played a lot of other games too, on both console and PC, but as a fan, BioWare never disappointed. I joined the BioWare community, and when Neverwinter Nights came out, I, along with thousands of others, picked up the toolset and started tinkering around to see what I could create on my own. At one point, even then, I considered applying to be a writer at BioWare Edmonton, but when I suggested this brilliant idea to my wife, she fixed me with a stare that was colder than a January in Alberta. I decided not to push it.
A few years later, as the War in Iraq entered its third year of dominating our news coverage at CNN, I started thinking about BioWare again. To apply to be a Writer at BioWare, all that’s required is that you submit a sample module, so I figured it couldn’t hurt to build a short piece and send it in to see what they might say. After a month of spending every evening writing dialogue and trying to understand scripting in C/C++, I finished my module and sent it in. Much to my surprise, I got a call two days later—they actually liked it! They still had about 6,000 suggested edits (that’s a BioWare tradition), but they told me they were opening up a studio in Austin, Texas, and would I be interested? Hmm. About four months later, I was the first Writer hired in under Principal Lead Writer Daniel Erickson. At that time, there were only about a dozen people working in the small temporary office, and we still weren’t even sure what game we’d be making, only that it would be a story-driven MMO. Just like all starting BioWare writers, I went through three months of training, and because the group was small, Daniel really had the time to mentor me, to show me what he had learned from writing on Dragon Age, and what he envisioned for the new project. It was a priceless education in the art of storytelling that I’ll never forget. I remember when I completed my training and became an official “Senior Writer”, I told the other writers who were still in training that it was better than graduating from college. Since then, I’ve heard many of them say the same thing.
What blew me away more than anything in those first few months was that this whole idea of story coming first… it wasn’t just talk. The storyline and narrative setting were the starting point of every discussion about design and even the conversations about art. Once we settled on Star Wars: The Old Republic, we started fleshing out the time period—we wrote timelines, faction summaries, visions for the planets we’d put in the game. It was a Star Wars: geek’s wildest dream! As we progressed, more writers joined the team, incredibly talented craftsmen, some were screenwriters, some were from pen-and-paper gaming, and some, like me, were really from totally different backgrounds. An amazing creative team formed, and some incredible stories were hashed out… and then rehashed out. The process for creating a narrative of BioWare standards is more thorough than you can possibly imagine. And that was before we even started writing dialogue! Talk about edits! The commitment to quality at BioWare and specifically on the writing team would blow your mind. And that commitment to quality only begins there. Just as the writing team has grown, and more than a dozen writers have now been involved, so have all the teams at BioWare Austin grown, and their passion and their commitment to quality is just as strong as it is on the writing team. When you play this game, you’ll experience the passion, and commitment we all have to making the best story-driven game in the world — Star Wars: The Old Republic will speak for itself.
For our initial news article this month, we chose to focus on “story”, because that really is one of the main ways in which Star Wars: The Old Republic stands out. We’re staking BioWare’s reputation on the story in this game, and that’s a both tremendous responsibility and a tremendous privilege. It’s something we’re taking very seriously at every level, and something I’m amazingly proud to say that I’m a part of.

Wow, great blog. I respect the fact that Bioware for many years takes their time to put quality in a game such as the story. What would Star Wars be with out a story? Crazy and boring right? I've played many MMO's. A lot of them lack the story. When they lack the story. Game play is the next on the list for players to enjoy. When you lack in that. Well you have a major fail of a game. A game that people wanted to make $$$ off of. From what I've read and seen as far as videos go. I'm looking very forward in playing this game. Keep up the good work, Bioware. One more thing.... PLEASE please, don't balance the characters. One character WILL be powerful than the other. It's just the way it is. You can't satisfy everyone. You either like it or you don't. If you're trying to achieve that. You'll be taking away quality. |
Is this game just going to be on the pc? |
I'm very touched that you managed to pull yourself back to video games after collage. I'm in collage right now and i find myself playing video games less and less it is very disappointing to not be able to sit down and play a great game but i find a lack of great games out there for me to play. I'm looking foreword to this master piece that is going to be Star wars The old Republic. |
I'm very glad to see that there are members of the SW:TOR team who still remember the magic of their first video games, who have a fan-of-video-games-background. Long before TOR comes out, the caliber of these guys is obvious. I'm excited. :) |

I hope darth nihilus is in there somewhere as well as sion and atris. And kreia. |

First of all lets start out with this quote from Darth Malak: No mere BOUNTY HUNTER can stand against a JEDI! If Bounty Hunters are going to be able to hunt Jedi in this game. You have to remember that there are Governments in this game (REPUBLIC AND SITH) that will not tolerate assassination attempts by Bounty Hunter's on there citizens, soldiers or politicians and would retaliate and track down the Bounty Hunter. In Star Wars episode two the Jedi council had Obi Wan hunt down the the Bounty Hunter in which later on in the movie the Bounty Hunter was killed by Mace Windu with only two hits one blow to his hand which in fact cut it off and the second blow to the neck area which in fact cut off the Bounty Hunters head. Now you noticed in the movies there are no cool downs on attacks made by every one. Now i hope that in this game the combat will not be hindered in any way by the unrealistic cool downs like in world of warcraft and other online games out there. This Balance garbage that i here a lot of is getting ridiculous! It sounds like socialism in online games to me, where everyone has to be balanced and bla, bla, bla. Trying to balance out characters in a game would be like trying to balance a Police Officer and a Special forces soldier it is just not going to happen or trying to balance an economy car with a dragster. Make a Profession what it's supposed to be and leave the socialist philosophy of we all have to be balanced garbage out. everyone in this world is not balanced with each other! there are things that i can do that most of you cannot do and there are things that most of you can do that i can't do. Please stop Crying for balance! If you want to kill a Jedi, Jump on your Sith or if you want to kill a sith jump on your Jedi.If you still think that you may want to kill a Jedi or a Sith by being a profession other than Jedi or Sith you may want to bring a squad of troops with you if you get lucky you might succeed. This GARBAGE about every profession should be able to kill a Jedi or A Sith one on one is just Garbage! |
I totally agree. The only logical "cool down" will be to wait for the character animation of each type of attack. Would be rather hilarious if I spammed a certain attack and the character just repeated the start of the animation each time. However, if I'm not mistaken I heard (or read) that SWTOR will be fast-paced action which hopefully will be something like that. *shrug* |
I agree, give the public a game that will blow us out of the water and keep us out. It is time someone did it right for a change. I like what I see so far, so keep up all the hard work. |
Its great to see that much of the BioWare staff are people who have actually experienced different forms and careers of life, along with seeing gaming through the eyes of noraml gamers, instead of just the narrow minded view of some designers and producers ect. This helps to let us (the fans/gamers) know that they know what we want, and that those certain details make the difference and how much of a difference they make. BoiWare I salute you! |
I have a question for you Bioware. Will the NPC'S and Companion characters in this game talk or will we have to spend a lot of time reading in this game??? I hope that the NPC'S and Companion characters talk to you like they do in KOTOR 1 & 2. I always wanted to play an online star wars game where the NPC'S and Companion characters talk to you. It makes it much easier for you when spend all day working and you want come home to relax and play a game that you don't have to spend a lot of time reading quest to find out what you must do to complete it. Keep up the good work Bioware! |

Sounds good, but i hope and pray that this game does not follow the path of world of warcraft and star wars galaxies in any way. I hate cookie cutter templates that force you to put skill points in skills that you are not going use,and like world of warcraft, the over sized weapons are to childish.Reminds me of the weapons in star wars legos. a game i may like if i were 6 years of age. I hope that we can fly our ships on planets and land them on the planets surface if the star ports are full or if we plan to land on a planet by stealth or if we are shot down and need to make an emergency landing on a near by planet. I also hope that we can land our ships on space stations and other star cruisers in space to do missions/quest in space or just to land on them to try and take them over.I hope that this game will go all the way with the star wars experience and not part of the way like most online games. Bioware, please do not give us a carbon copy of every online game out there! Give us something unique! Something that looks and feels like a real star wars game. Give us something unlike sony's S.W.G. There game looks like star wars, but does not feel like it where a jedi is but nothing a profession and is easy to kill. if Jedi in the movies were like the ones in S.W.G. The galaxy would still be in chaos and every other profession would save the galaxy and not the Jedi who are supposed to be the elite of the elite or they would not be the keepers of peace and justice! Give the character's real like skills that you would see in the movies not some generic garbage. Keep up the good work and i hope that i get the real Star wars experience and feel in S.W.T.O.R that S.W.G has failed to do because of there constant combat revamps. S.W.G pre-cu un-nerfed was the closest thing to getting right! |

I agree with you on a few points. SWG was an outstanding game until it was ruined by the constant changes aimed at making "all of the people happy, all the time"; which SOE should have realized is impossible. It's good to be responsive to your player base, but not to hand the reins over to them. Quite frankly, including Jedi in that game is pretty much what lead to its downfall. WoW does have some nice features to it, but they have simply taken the old ways of doing things right up to their logical conclusion. Just like way back in Everquest 1, people still run up and tag a NPC to get "go kill X and bring back 15 of their tails" quests. And it still provides huge lists of skills and powers, despite allowing there to be one "it" build per class that beats all others. How heroic is creating a cookie cutter character and being stuck in that pointless quest loop ever going to be? Just by stating that BW is going to avoid that whole rat race has already earned this game much respect in my eyes. Their commitment to relevant and well-created story is just what this gaming genre needs. And since jedi/sith are going to be playable and balanced right from the start, perhaps this game won't devolve into a bunch of people crying over why its taking so long for them to get an overpowered, out-of-balance character like SWG did. |

Mr. Chestney |
A very good read with lots of information for folks. A more detailed history on your education would have been better than what was provided, such as the mentors and true leaders (not gamers) that inspired you. Saying you went from gamer to what you have accomplished is the same as saying "I was born and ended up where i am today", it's simply misleading. To those wanting to gain what Mr. Chestney has done, being a "gamer" will not do it, Mr Chestney is the exception and golden egg winner in life, and just a bit lucky to get where he is. Hate to burst that bubble but that's reality. Intense, dedicated, education in business management(and not gaming business kiddies), being a real leader to groups of folks under him and dedication to goals and team ideals is what gets folks like Mr. Chestney noticed. Once he was in position to pursue his hobby in business form that is the time a dream becomes reality, working at something you truly love doing and getting paid for it. 10,000 more folks can try what he did and will fail. It's the right education, the experiance, the right time, a bit of luck, and you might accomplish what Mr. Chestney has done. Nice to see your dream came true Mr. C. :) |

Wow, this is truly an inspirational blog entry. Congratulations on your success, Rob. It just goes to show you that anything is possible in life if you dare to give it a try. As for my anticipation regarding the game, there are no words to describe it--I simply can’t wait! However, I'm just hoping that the Jedi/Sith element will be balanced and not overshadow other aspects of the game (such as other classes). Star Wars is much more than just Jedi and Sith weaving lightsabers around. |
This is rather inspirational, actually. I am hoping to accomplish something along these lines, myself. I've long entertained the idea of a game writer. I guess i should get off my butt soon. |
I just had an idea. How about after you finish SWTOR for the PC don't release it until your finished with xbox and/or ps3 please. So that is fair to the people that prefer systems over PC and/or can't afford a PC. |
It'd be hard formatting a game to work on Xbox PS3 and Pc. I think a lot of people have a pc, so it'd be best just to keep it at home. |
hey rob I was wondering if this is even a possibility........ Think about this for a bit in RL your interaction with everyone you meet changes you and them in some certain fashion. A key plot in time travel stories, what you change with one person may effect the enter timeline eventually leading to everyones life changing some. |
Wow Rob you must be the luckiest guy in the world! I am in high school and looking at colleges and I think I want to pursue a career in video games. I would do anything to have an internship at you studio, but frankly its just too far away. Firaxis Games is right near my house though and I think I am going to try and get an internship there this summer, if I can even get on their radar screen. Wow, I am still amazed at your story. I really wish I could just get up and join the industry. I am considering a computer science major and maybe a minor/second major in graphic design so I can specifically go into video games. I am a huge Bioware, Lucas Arts, KOTOR, and Star Wars fan and I still think you are the luckiest man in the world to be able to work on a project such as this. After reading this story I have really found inspiration that it is possible to pursue your dreams and do what you love. Thanks again Rob for the inspiration. |
I simply cannot wait to see this game in action. Star Wars is one of my favorite things in the world. I love Bioware games and I have a lot of faith in what they can do with this game. |

Just thought wouldn't it be expensive to have a mmo for the 360 monthly fees for xbox live.?!?!.!?!?.!? |
Holy crap. Oh my God. Jebus Christ. I can't say enough things to describe how I felt when I learned about SWTOR. I've been playin MMOs for several years now and one of the first I tried was SWG... boy, what a game that was, I dunno what was more entertaining- the jumping or the bugs. All in all, that was a disappointment. After years of trying various online games, I am currently into my second month of EVE-online and I'm thoroughly enjoying it, but I don't know how long that will last. Now I hear about SWTOR and that the great Bioware is making it...I couldn't be more excited. This game has so much potential. I want to be the first person to try the beta when it gets released, open or closed... When I make a decision, I want to feel the weight of it. I want to feel good for saving a person's life, or bad for taking it. I want to be affected emotionally when I do something. Tell us a story that will make us laugh and cry. Make us feel fear and anger and hate, and turn us to the Dark Side. Make us BELIEVE. Make this the game we've all been waiting for. It's time to dethrone Blizzard as the MMORPG kings and take your rightful place. So much is riding upon your shoulders, Bioware. Your faithful fans are counting on you. Please, for the love of God and all that is holy, don't let us down. |
well put |

Amen May the Force be with you Bioware. |

Oh! Just noticed- first comment of 2009 on this blog! |
Having this game on 360 also would be awesome! Please guys keep the KOTOR traditon. |
honestly if this is on the 360 thatd be cool but its most likely to stay the course of the pc |
I hope they put this game on the xbox 360 or the most recent console gaming system out at the time of release, it would expand the game so much in terms of community and they would make so much more money because quite frankly if you have an out of date computer it is a turn off to put alot of money into it just to play newer games. PLEASE ALSO MAKE IT FOR A CONSOLE BIOWARE! |

My video game career began with SEGA Genesis and hours upon hours of Sonic 2, with some old-school Gameboy action thrown in. I first started getting really into computer games once my friend burned me a copy of Diablo (in 1999!). Ever since then, it's been a blur with all of the stimulation I take in on a daily basis. But when one of my friends showed me EQ back in 7th grade, my video-gaming jumped to another level. I spent hours training my wood elf ranger to gain access to magic and learn how to craft my own mithril armor. It was a little unhealthy at times, so I finally stopped after about 2 years. I was cautious to not pick up anymore MMO's, but when SWG was announced I, being the huge SW fanboy that I am, immediately started planning for how I would gain access to free time for my new love. Sadly, after only a few months of SWG, the game turned on me. I began losing interest in my own character, and the single-character-server concept totally threw me. I even managed to attain force-sensitivity randomly, but my character was deleted, and I got no explanation why. After that, I put down MMO's for about 3 years, I was a little bitter after my hard work eventually amounted to nothing. Finally, Senior year of high school, I picked up a copy of Guild Wars for fun. I was hooked again. I worked as much time as I could, staying up until sunrise working on my Warrior/Necro until I maxed him out, then starting anew with a Ranger. Unfortunately, I started college and the hours I spent playing GW were moved aside to make room for papers and tests. I play GW from time to time still, but as a Junior in college, time is limited. This game, however, gave me the little giggly feeling I got when I saw SWG's first trailer. I have to play this game, there is no other way around it. I've beaten both KotOR games, and loved every minute of it. I even played a little SWRPG back in my pen-and-paper days in high school. I hope this game is great, I'm sure it will be, but I really hope it doesn't fall like SWG. The Star Wars Universe has been begging for an MMO of GW, WoW or early EQ's caliber. I mean, it is basically set up perfectly: a fully fictional world created and described, but only partially illustrated in films and books. There is so much still out there that hasn't been said yet, and only with human interaction can the SW Universe become something... a little more real. |

Is there a email address where us SW-geeks can turn in written storylines and concepts for your dismisal? lol anyays, Yes when is Beta!!!!!!! and you got lucky Robby thats a great job. WAR on ROBBY!!!!!!!! lol cheers -Verlass |

Star Wars Galaxies before SOE destroyed it was a fantastic game. The huge number of family and friends and blogs I have read in relation to SWG collapsing was a very dissapointing and heartbreaking experience for many gamers. I am both overwhelmingly exxcited for this game yet nervous at the same time. It's a fantasy I want to live again and I want it to succeed. |
Please make one of the companion characters like HK-47 in kotor 1. He was one of the few comedy relief characters that succeeded. Whoever wrote that character is a genius. I still laugh at the creative persepective of the droid and get upset when he dies. I would murder Yoda to be in Chestney's position. |
the "true" fans don't mind Jar Jar. He is a minor nuisance who does add some lightheatedness to the otherwise serious tone of the films. from a certain point of view. |

Will SWTOR be compatible for Mac (OS X) users? |

ive been playing online games for a little over 5 years or so now and they was all bar one concidered mmorpg's. i started of with my very first mmo called guild wars, i started playing straight after the beta on a freinds account, i like it that much i broke his arm and forced him to let me have it while he was cheating his way to level 40 in the call to arms server on an nwn mod lol (never winter knights) created by bioware and co. i speant a little over 1 year maxing out 4 chars and building a 10 guild 700 man alliance in guild wars before i finally started to play the cta mod on nwn with my mate, i stuck with nwn for about 2 years trying diffrent mods and developing my own mod with the same freinds essentially creating a small nwn community of our own. from nwn we started to play star wars galaxies which might i add was the first 100% true mmorpg (massive multiplayer online role playing game) i ever played. and it was pretty good for a while, then soon soe got their sticky paws into it and completely wrecked it to the point of no return and i watched it collapse and fall into a state of no return with many upset vetteran players me being one of them :( so after about 2-3 years of gradual on and off play in swg i quit and started playing eve-online and coasting back and fourth between nwn guild wars swg and some other cheesy titles i wont mention cough...freelancer..cough cough...city of heroes.. cough cough lol. ive been playing nwn for the past 2 years now as my primary getaway from real life and i must say its been good fun, but is now starting to get a little taxing. so this leads me to this new venture of the star wars multirilogy, ive played ever star wars themed game their is right to the end or to the highest possible level of acheivement leaving only the label on the out side of the box to be explored, and i must say i throughly enjoyed them all. in eve ive had a 130 man corp been to the ends of space and explored massive alliance's and took part in some of the biggest multi player fleet engaugments ever seen on any game and love it. for those of you that doubt the mmo or the fact that its from and based around the kotor and just after it, take it from me putting this in mmo format will blow your minds. swg was awesome when it was at its best, and this can only be better, i just hope they dont give it to sony online entertainment. oh please dont you use bloody gamespy its cack. thats it about me oh for thos eof you interested in my names in these other games :) - guild wars - wannos warrior (clan/alliance leader) and their we have it ive been around a bit and played many great mmo's :) |

I agree, WoW is far from the best game I've ever played, but it's a social thing for me. It's a way to keep up and in contact with friends that are not local, and have some fun at the same time. One of our favorite things to do while playing is to complain about the lag, lack of support (general "screw-it" type of attitudes the majority of GMs have) and the nonsensical game mechanics. It's the game everyone loves to hate. |
oh yea i played wow too, that has to be the worst one i ever played sorry guys but if you liked wow you are all victims to commercialism and market place propogander, all wow is, is an over exagerated experience brought to you by lots of funding and market exploitations aimed primarily at your fist and second sence's, the eyesight and your hearing, its visually spectacular and sounds great in dolby, but plays like a half sucked tennis ball by a rabbid dog in a game of killer. the only enjoyment i had was the time i smashed my keyboard over my monitor at level 4 because of the interface and lag, and knocked all my keys out over my desk, me and mate speant a good few hours laughing about it :) wow sucks its really that simple. |

I thought I'd give a little of my background as well for any that are interested. Might start a trend. I was never really into MMOs, but I've always loved RPGs. Video games for me are like interactive books. They tell a story. It's what makes me want to keep playing....to see what happens next. BioWare has always (in my experience) put out some of my favorite games. Wonderful stories, and great replayability due to the choices you can make that change the story and outcome. Several years ago, I tried my first MMO, The Matrix. I was really excited about it after watching developer interviews and reading about it online. Unfortunately, it didn't live up to all the hype at all. Two hours into playing it, there was no apparent story other than "You've woken up from you dream in the Matrix.....". Yeah, and??? So, I put it down and never touched another MMO for a long time due to the bad taste it left in my mouth. About a year ago, my girlfriend talked me into starting a WoW account with her so we could quest and play together. I gave in and haven't looked back since. I was officially hooked. I've been playing just about every day since, trying new classes, new races, new specs within the classes...it's just fun. Now before anyone says anything, my first thought was, "Well if I'm going to try playing another MMO after The Matrix, I at least want to play something cool like Star Wars Galaxies." However, I was informed (first by my girlfriend, then later by others that play) that SWG started out good, but went down hill, and was not really fun anymore. Normally, I like to give things a try for myself, but since we were starting accounts together, we had to agree, so WoW it was. NOW...Star Wars: The Old Republic has been announced! And it's being made by BioWare! I could not be more excited about this. I am already making plans to shut off my WoW account and dedicate all my game playing time to SW:TOR. I'm informing my friends on the game (who don't already know about it) that it's going to be coming out some time in the not too distant future (hopefully), and that when it does, I will most likely not be on WoW anymore. I cannot wait for this game. It's one of those double edged swords. You want it to come out NOW, but you also want BioWare to take the time they need to put out their normally amazing game. So, now I'm sitting patiently playing WoW, but all the time thinking of the possibilities of what kind of character I'm going to roll in TOR. |
Amen to that, Amen |
