Developer Blog: Writing Stories in the STAR WARS™ Universe

The writing team for Star Wars™: The Old Republic™ faces an unusual set of challenges. It’s not enough to write a great story; it’s not even enough to write a great player-driven interactive story, or a great player-driven interactive story that fits within a massively multiplayer environment. On top of everything, every story in the game must be a great Star Wars story. If it’s not, it belongs somewhere else.

So how does the writing team approach a challenge like that? Here’s a look at some of the features that make a Star Wars story worth telling.

The Foundation

We can all list familiar elements from the Star Wars films: Jedi, Sith, the Force, droids, lightsabers and starships; themes of heroism, redemption, learning, friendship and oppression; a trilogy structure, pulp-inspired “episode” names, and so on.

These iconic elements are the basic tools the writing team uses to build uniquely Star Wars stories—stories that feel like they’re part of the same fictional universe as the films. Not every Star Wars story needs a cantina or a wise old mentor, of course, but the films are the foundation for everything we do. If you’re not using at least some of those iconic elements, your story probably isn’t about Star Wars at all.

The original Star Wars™: Knights of the Old Republic™ is a great example of a story that uses this foundation well. Even without characters like Luke and Leia, it’s clearly Star Wars—it’s a story about Jedi, Sith and redemption, taking place against a galactic backdrop of strange planets and alien species.

The Building Blocks

But we’re not restricted to the movies. The Star Wars Expanded Universe of novels, television and comic books provides a tremendous amount of material for us to draw upon (as does Knights of the Old Republic specifically). Without the Expanded Universe, we wouldn’t have Mandalorians, a Sith Empire or even our setting’s time period! We wouldn’t know anything about the temple where the rebels hid on Yavin 4 or the names of the alien species in Jabba’s palace.

So long as these building blocks don’t obscure the foundation, we’ll use them. We’re also not averse to creating new settings, species and technologies, expanding on old ones, or developing new themes. Contributing fresh ideas to the setting is one of the most exciting things about working in Star Wars—but those ideas always have to fit, which leads to…

Star Wars “Feel”

The flipside of straying from the films is that we need to be careful about what we introduce. It’s easy to accidentally ruin our Star Wars “feel” by writing a story that just doesn’t seem right.

Sometimes, identifying these ill-fitting elements isn’t hard—time travel and dimension-hopping are staples of science fiction, but they don’t work well in the Star Wars universe. Other times, it’s a matter of staying true to the mythology of the Force (especially when it comes to new powers) or figuring out “Would a Jedi really say that?”

It’s not uncommon for debates to spring up around the office as to whether a story idea is “Star Wars-y” enough, and sometimes there isn’t an easy answer. Maintaining a Star Wars feel is one of the most difficult things our writers do. We need to constantly edit ourselves and ask if what we’re doing is right for the grander story of the Star Wars universe.

Respecting the Continuity

There’s one last big challenge to writing a great Star Wars story. Even if the story grows organically from the setting, adds something exciting and new, and has an undeniable Star Wars feel, it still needs to work within thirty years of other Star Wars stories told in comics, novels and television.

Since Star Wars: The Old Republic takes place almost four millennia before the films, it removes a lot of potential for error, but it’s still not easy keeping track of when Species X was first discovered or when Technology Y was invented. We do our best to work within established continuity where we can, and adjust it gently where we can’t—even a long-forgotten issue of Marvel’s Star Wars comic series is something we’d rather not contradict.

We always try to respect the fact that we’re not the first or last writers to work in this universe. Yes, we want to leave a mark—we’d love to see other writers expanding on what we’ve done, years down the line—but not by hurting the continuity as a whole.

I have to say as a starwars fan, and as a huge mmo fan, after reading a lot of comments posted, i hope this game flagged as an mmo, wont be floating around doing a quest or two(Which is good), but contains more diversity for mmo fans like myself, e.g. Not Force Unleashed but with a group. I look forward to Instances, (I would personaly love a raid system) to enjoy the game after the storyline and questing. Its hard to explain.

Are you kidding? Gungans rock! They don't need to be comic relief, they could be great warriors! Think about it, a gungan jedi, with his shield and lightsaber. Haha! Also, space battles would be great, but they have to be done right. For example, you shouldn't have to deal with a space battle every single time you try to go somewhere. You should be able to choose to avoid the pvp space battle, unless there is a battle important to the story line.

Bioware Staff, Really impressed with upcoming Knights. The storyline, voice actors, personal choices, and semi realistic art are great. I am a big fan of all the KOTOR games and I was a little put off when I first heard that Knights was going to be an MMO. I immediately thought of SW Galaxies... complete steaming pile... stupid player houses, shallow and unimaginative storylines, impossible solo play, poor combat system and character development, and on and on. However, what I have seen of Knights so far has me salivating for its release.

Some the great things that I experienced in the KOTORS that I would love to see in Knights are: being able to customize your skills, abilities and force powers; upgrading your weapons with components; crafting your own equipment; and suplimenting your stats with various items.

Some things that I implore you not to include would be: gungans (or any other mentally challenged and pathetic attempt at comic relief), personalized space combat, or trophies of any sort. Furthermore, what really put me off of SWG was that every time that I logged on I would be bombarded by people trying to sell in game junk. The reality being, gamers buy games to play them, not to be frustrated with a bombardment of commercialized messages that ultimately lessen the experience and overload the system.

Ok, I love the whole story element in the game, but there are a few things that I hope happen.. I hope it runs on a mac, but I don't think I have to worry about that too much because most all new games run on macs, and more macs are sold then windows nowadays. Another thing i hope is that the story is very open for new. Such as, you don't follow one specific path no matter what your choices are. One of the things I thought would be neat is if you don't always stick with one side. What if Luke really did go over to the dark-side?

Anyway, thanks and good job so far guys,
Sithoiuz

this game looks really good and i like the fact they have it fully voiced gives more realism to the game but i hope they have an option to turn on subtitles as i like to play music while playing games

Tue, 06/23/2009 - 21:43

having a star wars "feel" is one of the things im most looking for and one of the things this game needs to be succssfull

Thu, 06/18/2009 - 18:34

It is kind of interesting. I am a Star Wars Roleplaying game master myself and I have often thought about the same things as Alex Freed is writing here. What makes an adventure a real Star Wars adventure? How to be sure that everything that happens has the feeling of Star Wars?
After some time ponding about these questions I have found myself thinking that Star Wars is a lot more fantasy than it is sci fi. Sure, it´s fantasy with laser guns and spaceships but fantasy nontheless... But maybe thats just my opinion.
I would really like to be part of the storyteam for something as huge as TOR. How does one become something like that?

Mon, 06/01/2009 - 22:10

Cant wait for the story but i hope they have a Mmo feel to the story so questing with others and doing some extremely hard quest that requires a few friends to kill one monster or tons of monsters

Wed, 04/22/2009 - 07:04

This is an interesting concept. Not to refrence SWG to deeply but, in elements of that game it lacked a rule base of a story line. And when it did make attempts to craft a story it later contradicted itself.

If something does not exsist within the timeline even though it is acts of fiction some rules need to be established and followed. This will gain the respect of the fans and players. The story is above all else the core of the game. A great story should exsist above any other eleement. I have alot of hope SWTOR and Bioware can actually bring this together.

Sat, 04/18/2009 - 19:17

I see that the quest will be of great succes and the story it tells intresting but i still wonder if there batteldroits (i think not) in the game. I can not wait untill it comes out i realy want to play.

With many online games i hate there quest they always have another story how can they aspect we now wath the real story is and of they even have a true story take an exemple rubies of eventide I now ??? is there a game that have such a name? yes, its a good game I only wish they had better quest with a story or take runscape jou must now that game. a lot of quest but its just walking around or slaying monsters its not realy a game for multi players only wan quest is for 2 players. it realy sucks!!!

the quest of SWTOR will be not like that thats wath will keep me going and even makes the waiting less boring this realy makes me happy to see we have quest that have a real story to tell

keep it going writhing team cant wait to play jour quests

Wed, 04/15/2009 - 06:03

I love how they genuinely seem to care about the story.

As for space content, it is a must, it is not enoguh to jsut fly from one planet to another in a loading screen. 50% of the action of star wars is in space. I really love the idea of getting a crew together and exploring, and getting jumped by smugglers and literally telling my buddies to "Get to the turrets"

Thatd be sweet

Or something like " letts settle down over there" Landing in the middle of hte dessert in the night and hiking to get the jump on somebody

Sun, 03/29/2009 - 01:25

in regards to revan he probably will return in a future patch after release, or maybe even expansion, its smart of them not to make everything we know from the others available to us at start. Also I hope there will be lengthy story driven content in this and that the devs take all the time neccesary to create a game that they enjoy and want to play even knowing everything ahead of time. To me thats something, if you can make a game that people will not get tired of playing multiple times and that new player experience is just as grand as mid to high lvl content so the player feels immersed and like they are actually important to the game. you guys have a rare thing here, an already founded and fan heavy licsence that you put into the right time and it gives you the freedom to make your own epic adventure that may turn out to be absolutley amazing, and for one I sure hope so. oxxxxx}=================>

Sun, 03/08/2009 - 06:17

I'm 80% sure it'll be where they all talk or I sure as hell hope they do, which is the other 20%

Fri, 03/06/2009 - 19:31

I have a question for you Bioware. Will the NPC'S and Companion characters in this game talk or will we have to spend a lot of time reading in this game??? I hope that the NPC'S and Companion characters talk to you like they do in KOTOR 1 & 2. I always wanted to play an online star wars game where the NPC'S and Companion characters talk to you. It makes it much easier for you when spend all day working and you want come home to relax and play a game that you don't have to spend a lot of time reading quest to find out what you must do to complete it.

Keep up the good work Bioware!

Fri, 06/26/2009 - 08:27

The MMO is ganna be FULLY voiced. thousands of NPC's, hundreds of thousands of lines. All voiced

Wed, 02/11/2009 - 23:40

I heard that it was 500 years after the exile. But I'd like to know what happen.

Mon, 07/06/2009 - 16:48

300 years to be exact

Mon, 02/09/2009 - 21:38

Personaly I couldn't care less about the continuity. For me it's more important that the story is good and not wether it fits into the "big picture". I think most of the players that will buy the game haven't read the comic books or novels so they won't care either.

Still, It's good to see that they put that much thought into it. If they put the same amount of attention to the quality of the writing then I'm happy. =)

Wed, 02/04/2009 - 05:24

I can honestly say I'm ecstatic over this. I have been hoping and waiting for a game like this to come out, with it being Star Wars is just sauce for the goose! I just hope it isnt put through a strainer and watered down so it can be released quickly and full of flaws. I'm sure there are gonna be people that will hate it, even rant about it on the forums (there always are), but for now I'm just happy to know it's coming. Bioware, you guys have your work cut out for you. If KotOR 1 and 2 are any indication, you'll be just fine.

Tue, 01/20/2009 - 12:42

Well, I'm glad to see that Bioware are at least attempting to maintain continuity. My biggest problem with SWG was the fact that Sony took everything that they could find from the books and threw them into the game, with no respect for the continuity at all. (eg 'Captain Thrawn' in the Emperor's retreat when nobody knew about his existence until the events of Heir to the Empire, Han Solo's cousin Thrackan looking nothing like him, despite the entire focus of the stories he was involved in being that similarity, etc). Setting this story 4000 years before the movies means a lot less chance for contradictions like this, but at least Bioware is making an effort to avoid this kind of situation...

One thing I would like to see (which I get the impression may well occur with Bioware) is an evolving story with each update, and not just patches and random additions. I would like to see that the Player's activities actually have an effect on the larger universe (such as an overwhelming Sith victory by the players on a given planet will change that planet's status in the next update - which will give the feel of a universe at war).

I also agree that there should be a lot maore variety in classes than just Jedi or Sith classes (this is one area where Sony at least got it partially right). Sure, the majority of the stories involve Jedi or Sith, but there are a lot more characters than just the Force users in any story. Even the first film only had 3 Force users in it. Players should be given the option to play more than just the Force wielders, and given the limitations of the mythology of the universe, should be specifically restriced when it comes to playing such. Given the rarity of Force users in general, perhaps players should be limited to only one Force user per account at any one time? I know that a lot of people will object to this, but if the majority of players choose to play Jedi or Sith then that will seriously compromise the 'feel' of the Star Wars universe, where many people can go their entire lives without ever meeting a Force user...

Tue, 01/13/2009 - 21:39

All I can say is if it follows a similar path of the KOTOR games then I am excited. Both of those had some of the best story telling I have ever seen in a game. I really hope that this story gets built off of those or follows a similar path. I would love to find out what happens to Revan or anyone else in those games, but I understand the 300 years was probably decided so to make a fresh story so people who haven't played the KOTOR games understands whats happening. Also it might be hard because different outcomes could arise depending on what path you look at it through, light or dark side paths. Also it would be tough to give Revan an appearance because Revan could have been a guy or girl depending on what you picked, but I digress. I really hope that a separate lore book is given with the game because if not it will be a huge detriment to the understanding of the story and if sold separately it would be expensive considering how massive it must be. I really hope the planets that you can explore have a deep background history and are larger than those in KOTOR 1 and 2. If this turns out like KOTOR but more massive, it will be one of the if not the greatest game of all time for the PC.

Mon, 01/12/2009 - 18:11

Will the story in the game tell what Revan went looking for and wether he fond it?
Will we meet Bastila? Do we end up going looking for Revan and the Jedi Exile?

Wed, 02/04/2009 - 05:05

Bastilla and Revan may still be usable in the game, as the ghostly echoes like Obi Wan and Yoda became. Seeing how powerful they were it's a good possibility

Tue, 01/20/2009 - 17:06

We'll probably see proof of them, or echoes of their actions, but consider that this is set 300 years later. They are most likely dead.

Mon, 01/12/2009 - 14:31

Glad to see the Writers are passionate and determined about making this game as epic as it can be.

Mon, 01/12/2009 - 00:16

I'm really looking forward to the story element of this game. Making the replay ability of this game better than any other MMO. One of my major gripes about WOW was the fact that once I played through the game with one character if was the same quests, the same areas and the same goal every time(getting better gear)Leading us through a story that is well driven will let us play though again and again without the need to grind top levels. Good Luck and make this one of the major aspects of making the game fun and I'm sure I'll love it

Sun, 01/11/2009 - 19:24

I still cant believe how deep they wanna take this game. Ive never been this excited about a game, not even when the first galaxies came out.

Sat, 01/10/2009 - 02:27

If BioWare works closly with writers like Drew Karpyshyn i dont have to worry about them loosing SW feel.

Thu, 01/01/2009 - 03:34

im just happy that the story outside the game is being respected. BioWare has always proven themselves very effective in telling a story, as well as drawing you in. im really happy to see a star wars mmo being done by the right people. and not that one that took up the challenge of putting story of the INDIVIDUAL and not the universe in the forefront. with as much customization as there seems to be i cant complain.

Thu, 01/08/2009 - 20:47

I have always felt that bioware is one of the best and most customer-oriented software developers out there. Everything they touch turns to gold. While there are a few other developers out there who can make the same boasts (blizzard comes to mind) the thing that really puts bioware head and shoulders above them is their devotion to memorable captivating stories and an obviously crystal clear understanding of what their customers want. I'm a store manager with gamestop and I ALWAYS recommend bioware games (even sonic chronicles on DS). I will be promoting the heck out of this game and will definitely throw a midnight launch party at my store.

Fri, 01/02/2009 - 10:34

I tottaly agree with you on that they always have done a good job in the story part

Mon, 12/29/2008 - 01:44

One of the things that I absolutely loved about the KOTOR games, was we got to see a larger piece of the star wars pie. I get really sick of star wars games or RPG's that are near clones of the actual movies themselves. Lucas painted a very large picture in the movies, and the fact that Bioware recognized that you can make a star wars game without copying elements completely from the movies is perfect. The universe is a large place. The time period this takes place in fresh and open. It's nice to be able to feel like we'll be part of the larger picture. Kudos to you guys.

Thu, 12/25/2008 - 21:24

As long as it stays true to the stories told throughout the Star Wars saga, then they can do whatever they want with it.

Thu, 12/25/2008 - 08:03

I seriously can not wait for this to come out! finally, something that will make me stop playing that "other" mmo.

Wed, 12/24/2008 - 19:36

can't wait for this id like if it had a hard core play to it other mmog i found to be to easy so take your time

Wed, 12/24/2008 - 09:12

I really hope the story element is executed well. This will probably make or break the game for people like myself who always get bored with MMORPG's because of the lack of story telling. I also appreciate your devotion to offering an authentic "Star Wars" experience. I can think of so many Star Wars games I've played over the years that failed to do that. I have faith in you guys at Bioware though; you have always excelled in this area in the past. Have fun and keep us updated!

Ps. I envy you job haha. It must be fantastic to be able write for such a awesome project.

Tue, 12/30/2008 - 21:07

There is two elements of the rpg starwars gaming i would realy like to see developed inside this universe first and foremost the ability or skill to be able to create your own droids based merely on a set of specs and your character skills. also to be involved in their growth and evolution through experience and upgrades leading to an interactive droid market set mostly by the playing members of the universe. perhaps even add a respectful ammount of individuality to the droid concept by changing their looks and details based on skill and cultural background as well as a reflection of its creators personality through colors powers and attributes set by the player. second and Way more importantly the capability to create and tune your own spaceships based on the same concept and if posible create unique sidequests based on elements required to make your own ship work such as seeking a black market char to give you a link to a special piece of a military prototipe engine or the necesity of a crew of player char to help you ensamble fix and repair or even be part of the creation proyect due to a set of skills needed in the proces that only a certain kind of character may have and not chare with others makin the entire building research and dev proyect into a huge group or guild quest for knowledge resources and contacts.

Wed, 12/24/2008 - 06:57

Wow what a good read! Keep up the good work guys! We're in desperate need of a science fiction mmo with a market saturated with fantasy crap. Starwars is an amazing universe and I'm comforted by the fact that this project could not be in more skillful hands. Storyline for me is everything, if the story and back round are not interesting, than the world just doesn't seem alive. I'm really glad to see you guys taking your time hammering out a fantastic story. Just remember to take your time with the whole project, as a fan I'd rather see several delays than an unfinished project hitting the shelves that doesn't do you guys, or starwars justice. In other words; Learn from Funcom's Age of Conan :P

Mon, 12/22/2008 - 03:25

To Doo-Anyan's response (reply didnt work): That would be great, people wouldnt get bored with the game after 6 months. That was the thing with WoW I hated... their was so many twinks, and high level toons it became boring very fast when you hit level 70. Then their was that whole level 70 "epic demi-god complex" wherein someone hits level 70, and within a week, with some help from their guild and/or friends they have all t6 armor and think they are above everyone else, and no one has the right to talk to them. If SWTOR worked it to something like Doo-Anyan described, that might curb the whole "I got help from friends, and now I am epic without even trying" concept. It would definatly keep the game interesting for a lot longer.

Tue, 12/23/2008 - 19:24

That would be great and all i have no problem with that idea, but it wouldn't necessarily be in the developer's best interest in making it as accessible to as many people as possible because if there really was only a few "grand master's" then those people would most likely get the "demi-god" complex and could possibly ruin the game for other less elitist players; but then there's also the situation with WoW and Fable 2 where it's a little too accessible to everyone and it kind of ruins it for people who are more experienced at end game. So they would have to find a good balance in between to make that all work.

Mon, 01/12/2009 - 18:36

good idea and EA already owns bioware so your idea might actually be thiers also

Thu, 12/18/2008 - 02:02

Sounds like great work is being done! Keep it up!

Hopefully you will come out with some exciting story lines.

Mon, 01/12/2009 - 18:35

good idea and EA already owns bioware so your idea might actually be thiers also

Tue, 12/16/2008 - 16:28

EPIC!

Sun, 12/14/2008 - 02:22

So...speaking of continuity...perhaps I'm just confused, but:

"Dark Lord of the Sith Naga Sadow led his armies in an aggressive campaign to destroy the Galactic Republic. Though the Sith were successful at first, the Jedi Order rallied back to defeat their dark counterparts, systematically destroying the Sith civilization on Korriban.

Unbeknownst to the Jedi however, the last Emperor of the Sith managed to escape the carnage and fled into Deep Space with his most trusted Dark Lords."

Is this saying that Naga Sadow is the Emperor? I'm quite certain he's dead by the time of the game...

Sat, 12/13/2008 - 21:19

This game has the potential to be the best story in any video game! The companion character's direction, must be alot of fun to argue about during brainstorming. It will add plenty of depth to player emersion and the SW universe. That is the Kotor style which really made them into a hit. I wish I was working on something like this instead of advertisements. Extra jealous... CaN't foCus mi haTered... MuSt go InteRRogate/TorTure JeDi RePubliCaNSssS... All Hail Darth Obama... Muahahaahaaahaahaha!!!

Wed, 12/17/2008 - 23:34

Not to be SW historian, but Naga had his chance already. Slept on Yavin IV, woke up and trained Nadd, then killed by Nadd only for his legacy to truly be fulfilled by the likes of Exar Kun and Revan. Not unheard of since Sith history tends to splinter just like the jedi (ex: Mecrosa Order, Krayts Sith, etc.)

And if anyone needs a good Wiki on Star Wars I recommend Wookieepedia!

If the Force is knowledge then may it be with you

Sat, 12/13/2008 - 05:34

YAY!! I am so happy for this game to finally come out. I actually just finished KOTOR 1/2 for the 100000th time today, and was wondering when a new one was coming out. To find out today it's a MMO has just got me giddy like a schoolboy. Jedi Master here I come. I hope my brother wants to play a nice Jedi and not a sith grrr.

Sun, 01/04/2009 - 10:58

I am also giddy! Not sure if I'm gonna go Jedi or Sith though D:

bring on the Star Wars!

Sat, 12/13/2008 - 08:44

This is shaping up nicely keep up the good work guys.
