GameSpy had a chance to talk with Dr. Greg Zeschuk, Co-Founder and Vice President of Development Operations at BioWare and a Vice President at EA, and Dr. Ray Muzyka, Co-Founder and General Manager/CEO of BioWare and General Manager/Vice President at Electronic Arts. From that meeting they have crafted an article entitled The Old Republic: BioWare Returns to Star Wars (PC).
Here is an excerpt from it:
GameSpy: Players can choose to support the Jedi or Sith factions in the game. Will this choice be hard-coded from character creation, or will players choose a faction only during gameplay?Make sure to read the entire article here.
BioWare: Player Choice is essential to BioWare storytelling, and we have kept that a huge priority for The Old Republic. We want players to have as much choice as possible in the game, and choosing your class and allegiance to either the Republic or the Sith Empire during character creation is really just the first of many choices you'll make in the game. You'll face many choices that will cause you to think long and hard about loyalty and about your character's morality. Some will be cut and dry, and others will be more difficult. This is "Star Wars", so just because you're a Jedi doesn't mean you can't fall to the dark side. Darth Vader was of course the perfect example of this in the movies because he fell to the dark side and then was redeemed in the end by Luke and turned against Darth Sidious.
We want every one of our players to experience their own personal "Star Wars" fantasy. If you want to fall, you'll have that chance, and conversely, even those born under the Sith Empire will have the opportunity to make choices that will bring them back toward the light! Beyond this even, we've alluded to the fact that there will be many cool roles in the game other than Sith and Jedi, and within those, you'll have other allegiances with another set of interesting choices. We're inspired by the high-fantasy archetype roles that are in the "Star Wars" movies.

Awsome interview, though not much new info leaked out. However the more I read about this game, the more I want to play it. |
The RP aspect is going to be awsome IMO. Nothing like any game has had to offer before. I am not a huge RP person, but this inspires me to be more so. |

um it's mmo! |
Ah, finally an MMORPG that tries to utilize the Role Playing aspect of the game and what great luck it is that it was BioWare that chose to undertake this grand quest, i have great faith in their abilities. That being said i acknowledge that BioWare is waltzing on unfamiliar territory and therefore i must hope they do not rush this project and that they keep on focusing on the little things. Good Luck. |

I really hope a subscription gamespy wont be necessary to play TOR..i might just be stupid but i think gamespy is too complicated and i think that paying to play the game should be done much like WoW, easy and simple...but thats just me |
I don't see why people keep hoping to see this on the consoles. The controls would be stupid and slow. |
Exactly. An MMORPG fits computers a million times better than any other consoles. |
This sounds very great so long. I´m sure this game will be as good as the other parts of Kotor because Bioware always has done a great job. I´m looking forward for more informations and screenshots. |
Couldn't BioWare change its name? |
I like it that apparently Sith and Jedi won't be the only roles one can take. |
The concept of a personal storyline for an MMO is a very cool concept. I can't wait to see it in game. It really makes me wonder how they'll pull it off, but I know that if anyone can do it, it's Bioware. Keep up the good work, guys. |
I think this mmo will succeed where others have failed because it doesn't look like it will be tedious like FFXI or go nowhere like WoW. This game has a storyline and the companion character is a very nice touch. The KOTOR story lines are incredible, so hopefully this will be too. Most mmo's have you run and kill something, bring back a trophy, rinse repeat. I fall out of mmo's because I don't feel like I'm ever getting anywhere or working towards the overall good of the faction. FFXI was nice since it had a dynamic storyline, but it was so dang tedious to do anything. I'm very excited for this game. |
I really hope this is going to be as good as it looks because it really has TONS of potential! I would love to see this be For PC and Mac and possibly be ported to the gaming consoles as well. |
I have never played an MMO that really had the gameplay or depth to hold my attention for more than a couple months or maybe a year. But I could always go back to KotOR by Bioware, and I have played Mass Effect numerous times. I believe that Bioware is going to do great things for the MMO community and the star wars fans. And I really believe that this will be something that can hold my attention for more than just a year. Hopefully for the duration of it's lifetime. Actually I'm preparing for the MMO now by completely building my computer from scratch with some of the best parts available to me right this moment. The price is liable to go down after today, it being X-mas and what not, and I will have my computer soon and all I have to do is wait for this game. Good work Bioware, keep it up. I plan to work for you soon ;). |
Same happened to me, My longest time playing an mmo has been 2 years but I still play KOTOR 1 and 2 I think I've played like 5 or 6 times each. So I gues I'll really love this MMO, I cant wait to play it. |
they are putting huge emphasis on your character's story...i wonder how that'll affect gameplay |
Im hopeing that this will be at least close to being as cool as KOTOR. |
so far from what ive read its only on pc at the moment but i would really have liked it to have been on xbox 360!!! |
Are you guys not going to make this for XBOX360 that would rellay suck for all of who only have xbox360 |
AT least bring back Darth Revan as downloadable content or something you cat just let the story from kotor 2 slip away like that come onm guys please!!!! |
I wonder will there be a trailer when u switch the game on like on kotor 2 |
I'm so happy to see a new star wars mmo and omg BIOWARE! is making it! Big fan of your games and this one will be top notch! Keep up the good work. |
Sounds awsome, glad to hear them confirm that there are going to be other classes than Jedi and Sith to play. :D Can't wait! heh, keep up the good work bioware! :D |
Truly something to look forward to. |
Please make the clothes looser and more like jedi robes, they look like their painted on their body like 80's hair bands. I do agree that the lightsaber hilts are way too big, it would be cool to customize them, but don't make them look like pringle cans, other than that the game looks great. |
Finally a MMO with a story as a main pillar. dont get me wrong there are great MMOs out there but all seem to be grindy with little or no story based on your character. Lore is Great but to be able to live the story of my own character now thats entertanment. Can't wait for this one and may the force set you free. (insert evil laugh here) |
So we choose our side from the start? If so then can we be neutral :)? |
I think, thus far, they've done an admirable job and keeping mum on features that aren't ready. They've even stated it as their PR goal - if it ain't done, don't talk about it. I think very often this is where many MMO's have gone bad, and WOW is certainly not immune. Someone does an interview, mentions something seemingly innocuous and then the fan sites pick it up and blow it up into something it’s not, thus setting up expectations that can never be met. This is Warhammer did away with the forums all together. Bioware is very aware of this, so don't expect to be hearing anything about the game play for a while yet. Most interviews will be about the Story, 4th Pillar, and general statements to keep everyone entertained until a feature is ready. Once the features do start to roll out, they'll do it in a very measured fashion, focusing on one big piece at a time. |
im not the neutral type of person i do prefer to go all out darkside sith lord but i have a friend that likes to be neutral and that would be nice but there would have to be something special about being neutral. namean! |
Dont rush guys, take time...bioware, at least take 6 months of beta testing before launch. Many games rushed and wanted to keep game closed as possible to avoid bad rep, AoC got burned, they hyped hyped and didnt deliver. Plz, take time with beta testing, dont make MAJOR combat changes as AOC, SWG and ruin what we wait so long. Best wishes, may force be with you :) |
This isn't the update this week, is it? |
Yes i'm very happy to see this game in the works, I also have played wow for along time, but I will be dropping to play this game when it comes out. |
So I play wow and have 7 level 70s and 2 level 80s and just stopped playing a couple weeks ago because the story line sucks, everyone can get great gear and it does not take a great team to do anything. I really hope BioWare pwns the market. Star Wars TOR is going to be legendary and I am sure we all see that. As for as what kind of Jedi you will be, I think the Talent Tree Spec. from wow might work for it deciding what kind of abilities you should receive so that no 1 Jedi or Sith is all powerful. Thank the force for ending my WoW Career :) and thank the force for BioWare and this new MMO. Cant wait and will be posting alot more :) |
As an avid Star Wars fan and die hard fan of the Old Republic series, this will be a no questions asked MUST HAVE FOR ME. Bioware has always put a lot of heart and effort into their games. The most recent, Mass Effect, I've fallen in love with and cannot wait for the next installment. Regardless, this will be the first time I touch a true MMO, as I've never played WoW, and have only passively played Guild Wars, however I agree with many, I think TOR stands a good chance against the marketing giant, if only because of the Fourth pillar of Bioware's MMO,Story. I look forward to it every time I see or hear Star Wars, so keep it up Bioware! TOR For The Win! |
If they do this micro trands action thing i keep hearing about where looting items is a thing of the past and you have to buy the cool items in the game with real cash. This game wont last 3 months then. |
Agreed, don't take looting out of games the chance to kill something and then take its awesome gear is my favorite part of any game. |
I'd just like to say that this game is goin to destroy WoW. |
If there going to let us pick our factions in the beginning of the game .Why can't we just be normal and then further on pick our side of the force. |
Wow...sounds great. Good article. Did anybody else catch the reference to multiclassing? |
that sounds awesome! i havent played a mmorpg since eqoa so this should be great. |
sweeeeet! |
if we fall to the dark side can we turn back to the light?? |
I must admit this is GREAT News. I can not wait for this Title to launch I know it will be a while but OHH man it's gonna rock. Great team on it too so I expect to see alot of crazy new stuff. ALL MY HOPE for your future. |
I'm glad they said the companion characters wont be cookie cutter. Puts a few of my fears to rest. |
EPIC! |
