Story in STAR WARS™: The Old Republic™

“BioWare’s vision is to deliver the best story-driven games in the world.”
BioWare mission statement

“To create games that inspire, challenge and engage players.”
LucasArts philosophy

Creating great stories in video games is a hallmark for both BioWare and LucasArts. Star Wars: The Old Republic marks the beginning of a joint effort between these two companies to bring epic storytelling into a massively multiplayer online game. We believe that there are four pillars of the roleplaying experience: progression, exploration, combat, and story. Achieving a high degree of quality in each of these will create a rich, challenging, and emotional gameplay experience. Among massively-multiplayer online games, story hasn’t always received the same level of attention given to the other pillars. Star Wars: The Old Republic brings a new dimension to the MMO experience by putting story front and center.

What does this mean to you? When you play Star Wars: The Old Republic, you will experience a new level of immersion achieved through the following features:

  • Epic Star Wars™ environments and story arc
  • Class-specific storylines that evolve based on player choice
  • Companion characters with individual motivations and personalities that will change based on player interactions

In Star Wars: The Old Republic you will have an emotional attachment to your character and face decisions in the game which will guide the development of your character and determine the direction of the character’s storyline. Whatever your choices may be, you’ll still be the hero (or villain) of an epic storyline which gives extra meaning to the other gameplay pillars. Character advancement will be much more than coming up with efficient statistics. Exploration will be about experiencing new places, new people, and new stories. Finally, instead of just reaching for that next level, you will be engaging in visceral combat reminiscent of the Star Wars movies where you’re motivated to fight for more than just yourself – but also for a cause.

We believe that choice is the most gripping and crucial element of these stories. The team has left a lot open so that your decisions have a significant impact on the way the storylines and the characters develop. Because each storyline offers multiple paths, Star Wars: The Old Republic writers create much more content than you would expect from a linear game storyline. In fact, Star Wars: The Old Republic will contain more story content than all other BioWare games combined. As with the original Star Wars™: Knights of the Old Republic™, some stories intertwine, and some decisions may lead your character down a completely unexpected path. Smaller choices may yield small results, but on some occasions may later lead to larger consequences.

In Star Wars: The Old Republic, your class means more than just the amount of hit points your character has or how many skills you can choose. Each class has its own epic storyline that will drive the majority of your character’s journey. These storylines reflect the spirit of the class you chose, some more traditionally heroic, some more sinister. Class-specific content allows you to play through a tailored experience based on your choices.

Along your journey, you’ll come across a feature that made the original Star Wars™: Knights of the Old Republic™ series so immersive – companion characters. Companion characters are your non-player character (NPC) allies, each with their own personality, thoughts, and struggles. Companions will fight by your side and get caught up in your storyline. You might even get caught up in theirs as well. Because each of your companions has a mind of his or her own, they will react to the choices you make and may support or even turn against you.

With compelling choices, class-specific epic storylines, and fully developed companions characters, we are making a strong commitment to put the concept of story at the forefront of Star Wars: The Old Republic. By focusing on these story-driven features, our goal is that you will become immersed in your character and others around you, explore exciting environments, and in the end, get lost in your own Star Wars saga. Stay tuned to the official website for more updates and behind the scenes looks at Star Wars: The Old Republic.

Did anyone complete the Sith Academy mission in KOTOR, where you had to go to each of the Sith Lords tombs in Korriban and get an Item from them. One of the Sith Lord's Ghost 'remind me who please' tells you that following the Dark Side leads to Oblivion when you die and the Light side is more powerful. No matter how cool the Sith are, I'm not going to argue with a Ancient Sith Lord who has just told me that he regrets turning to the dark side...

I agree TLK, it seems a little hard to fathom how exactly companion characters would fit into an MMO. I'm also wondering how the group mechanic will be in this game.

Sun, 06/21/2009 - 03:13

I really hope this game will live up to all the hype because if it does it will jaw-dropping. Of couse theres always the possibillity that it isn't as good as the original two KOTORs.

Well here is the real issue on promoting a good stroywith an MMO, integrating your story that effects the rest of the world. In a single player RPG when you do something game changing the whole world revloves to change. obviously in a MMO this can't happen. But with a game where the current story is the middle of a sith/jedi war then... this might be possable, at least at lvl cap. I donno if it is but until my actions effect the world as a whole (even if just a little) it will be hard to feel as immersed in the story... which to me is totally fine i'm really just glad to have a SW MMO set in this time frame (cause it makes a lot more sence to have it in the old era) if bioware managed to pull that off it would be crazy

Actually WoW implemented a system where what you did changed an entire area, permanently. It was a great concept. The only draw back to it was that, basically you could only group with people that where in the same phase of the area as you, but as soon as you quested far enough there were no more changes.

Just don't turn the companion characters into mindless, influence-based slaves like in KotOR2. The characters in KotOR 1 were much better and fuller; making dark side decisions at the beginning of the game and having Carth and Bastila berat you for your decisions actually caused some remorse because you were attached to those companion characters and knew their stance on certain issues. Characters need to be full-bodied but also full-minded, with opinions and beliefs that may or may not conflict with the player's.

WoW quests just sent you to a new area after area completeing miscellaneous meaningless quest after another and just leaving that area just felt like you didn't accomplish much.

I'm glad to hear that the RPG elements will be stuck with. It should be amazingly immersive if from the sound of it. Unfortunately every MMO to date I've ever played isn't nearly as engaging with it's storyline and combat as a single player RPG.
Hopefully the combat in particular can be kept from becoming droll and dry by the creative minds working on this game, as opposed to click, shoot/melee ability number one, click, shoot/melee ability number two. It's the grind that I would love to see avoided.
In any case it's obvious there's plenty of talent on this game, I trust you all will do an amazing job on it. I envy all the devs on this game.

I'm very interested to see the MMO aspects of this game. So far, based off of these updates, the only thing SW:TOR would loose if it *weren't* an MMO is player interaction. Storyline, class mechanics, combat, companion characters - all of these features would still appear in an RPG single-player TOR.

Don't get me wrong - I'm not saying you're doing it wrong! I'm simply itching to read about how the team will take advantage of SW:TOR being an MMO (world PvP, player collaboration, a changing economy, etc).

Its Great that this mmo will have all The future KOTOR's after 1 & 2 in it

ATTENTION BIOWARE!!!
I'm 100% sure you already knew this but I'm just pointing it out,the reason there are some haters of this game doing petitions and stuff to make it sell less is because they didn't get a KOTOR 3,which i was disappointed too,but then i heard about this and I'm really happy,BUT i will admit that the TRUE reason of everyone being agitated is...Revan... You created a character that surpassed even vader/skywalker as far as lore goes and one that totally could own any other one such as yoda, luke, han e.t.c Anyways everyone is pissed because you took...sorry wrong...Obsidia took him away, okay i found it even more fascinating of him going to save us all on his own, sure, but then that was it,no info,no nothing,we were left there wondering, then this comes out,and Revan ain't alive...so my plea is more like a double idea----> A) Please explain in depth on Revan's past after he left for the Unknown Regions, and make it epic cuz lol Revan surely deserves it... B) Release a KOTOR 3 game...don't give me stuff like we are doing 1,2,3,4,5,10+ that doesn't work for any fan we want Revan... as weird as it seems, I'm not saying cancel this no I'm looking forward to it, I'm saying someday after this make a KOTOR 3 so we can close that chapter, and also give those console crybabies what they want thus making them shut their joystick mouths up.Peace, great job so far keep going, don't sacrifice quality for quantity...

Every BioWare game I've played has been an exceptional joy and thrill. From Mass Effect to Jade Empire (and of course; KOTOR). I am very excited for this game, being a huge Star Wars fan as well, and cannot wait to explore the content.

Anxiously awaiting!

Sun, 02/15/2009 - 12:07

The storyline is what will make this game to stand out among other MMORPGs. If it will be like what you have written, it will blow away everyone's mind. I'm so excited to start munching this game!:P

Sun, 01/25/2009 - 18:58

Wow, this really really looks great. I am dying to play this game!

Thu, 03/19/2009 - 13:38

same here

Tue, 01/13/2009 - 02:07

i assume part of the story has to do with revan and maybe the mandalorian wars, jedi civil war and sith wars... i dunno i just hope they talk bout great sith lords in this game, like revan, malak, sion, nilhus, traya, exar kun, etc

Wed, 06/10/2009 - 04:21

if the sith temple on korriban is a big place then obviously they have to have great sith masters like marka ragnos and the like

Sun, 01/11/2009 - 10:18

What made me really love KOTOR 1, was when I was being trained as a Jedi and then becoming a Sentental, Counselor, or the guardian.

Sun, 01/11/2009 - 08:28

Asuming that this MMO will have and end game and not die out like Tabula Rasa did when you hit cap. All I really want to know is can you got dark and light pretty much at will. Like I want to have a RP char that is light, falls and then is redeemed. I hope all the plans for a story driven theme supports this so no one gets stuck on one side they don't want to be on. IE maybe some repeatable quests to gain light or dark side points.

This game seems very cool. I loved KOTOR 1 and 2 and i cant wait till this one comes out. I think it would be cool if u could go online and play with ur friends or see how their characters turned out. I also hope in this game u can have more of a choice in what ur jedi wears like if u want the hood up or down. I think it would be cool if u could put together ur own outfits. But i think this game is going to be cool and i cant wait till it comes out.

Fri, 01/02/2009 - 16:03

There are still ways that they can tie in with the storyline here, Force sensitive humans can still live up to 400 years so depending on revans age in the first kotor it is possible that when the game releases (or in a later patch) that you will be able to find revan.

But this game looks great and i CANNOT wait to play it, guess ill have to stick with wow for another year or 2

Fri, 01/02/2009 - 04:01

I kind of like what I see except I'm more concerned about what I don’t see or hear about; i.e. - social, crafting, harvesting, housing, etc…

It looks like it may be a bit too much of a story driven game.

I guess that's acceptable if you son't want to group, socialize, craft, build houses and guild houses, harvest, collect items and display them.

When I hear that all play styles will have something to do, what about the architect or chef or doctor?

Tue, 04/07/2009 - 18:12

I get the feeling that Bioware is looking for more iconic classes in SW:TOR; "Jedi," "Smuggler," and "Pilot," rather than "chef" or "doctor."

It's possible that they may bring a class akin to the Combat Medic from the great early days of SWG, or add in a crafting aspect that different Classes could pick up on the side, but I doubt we'll be hearing about this for a while.

Sun, 01/04/2009 - 20:58

Crafting and housing seems like it would be interesting initially, but I don't want to see another SW mmo were your goal is to harvest enough minerals to sell to get this poster to hang up in your living room. thats just not exciting. Honestly, being a chef should not be a main class either, "Hey I fight in the clone wars, what do you do?" "...Oh, well i can cook up a mean krayt steak...", but more of a side activity to take you away from your normal fighting. And "doctoring" or healing should definately be an important combat class, like a Jedi Consular is a combat healer/buffer or something to that effect.
As far as grouping and socializing, that is extremely important to the game. Thinking back however, I would much prefer a long story line that you need your guild mates with you to accomplish over waiting on the shuttle to get back to your guild city so you can stand around and listen to the hired band play with their nalargons.

Wed, 12/31/2008 - 03:10

This is a good read. I know it is a restatement of some old posts on the subject, but more focused and fleshed out. I can't wait to see where this is going. I have high hopes for this game.

Story line in an MMO? what will they think of next?....We shall see indeed. Just remember don't hype it so much you end up disappointed. No game is perfect.

Tue, 12/23/2008 - 21:34

I think that this game has alot of potential and offers to be a great experience. However i do not see why they have perverted what was a BRILLIANT concept by turning it into an MMO, why cant we just enjoy playing the game without messing around with the internet and subcription fee's. I say give us KOTOR3!!!!

MAY THE FORCE BE WITH US ... ALWAYS.

Mon, 12/22/2008 - 00:51

I hope they at least "strongly" consider multiple platform for this game. A good example of success would be ffxi, which is very story driven. If Bioware does not do this then they will not compete marketively, as WoWers will likely remain addicted to WoW. A lot of consumers are waiting to sink their teeth in this new project. I have all platforms, but personally prefer set-up and interface on a game console(XBOX, PS3) as a pc tends to need multiple hardware upgrades with every new piece of software that comes out, and who really wants to have to cough up more if they do not have to.

Regardless what Bioware/Lucas Arts decides, I feel this is one project that will see great successes. I will be on board the moment it hits shelves.

Sun, 12/21/2008 - 19:58

I think this game's gonna rock! Just when will it be released? And how much will it cost? I cannot wait though.... Just one last Statement: You Sith have threatened us enough! Do something and be destroyed, or do nothing and be destroyed!

Wed, 06/10/2009 - 04:26

ur as alone as you think sirs

Mon, 02/09/2009 - 00:56

consider me signing up, even though I might not follow the code perfectly...

Tue, 12/23/2008 - 03:54

Finally! A Jedi supporter! Yep, just you and me against the whole of the Sith empire. Man, we need to do some major recruiting!
May the Force be with us all.

Fri, 12/19/2008 - 08:47

When will the game be releashed in greece.... i cant wait

Thu, 12/18/2008 - 00:37

I am kinda half-hearted about this... I REALLY WANT KOTOR 3... i mean really... the orignal Kotor is still in my top 5 favorite games and i think this may ruin it... making it a MMO and for PC... what kinda mistake is that... but i guess i'll have to deal with it... cuz bioware already said they weren't going to make another KOTOR... i'm really disappointed...

Wed, 12/17/2008 - 07:56

when does this game start

Tue, 12/16/2008 - 20:43

SWG was uber-weak. Really hope this game is just as good as WOW.

Mon, 12/15/2008 - 17:03

The Star Wars movies are my sole. and swg was also my sole but this is gona be EPIC

Mon, 12/15/2008 - 06:38

i want this games have conection with kotor .... and becouse is produce of Bioware and not SOE is very good ...

Mon, 12/15/2008 - 14:31

Im sure Bioware will do the best on this game, we cannot doubt about this guys because they're one of these companies that every game they do is something amazing. Im wondered with the posibility of play with my friends in the same group completing the game. A possible chat-group with NPCs allowing all the PC party member to take place in the conversation with diferents skills would be a wonderful add and the definitive proof that i will die of happines playing this game... lol

Mon, 12/15/2008 - 00:14

I agree. I am OK with them creating a new story, but they still should make connections with KOTOR and KOTOR II storyline. Other than that, the game should be really cool.

Sun, 12/14/2008 - 22:05

story is gonna be very easy for this i mean come on its star wars.
But in games like wow and GW its hard they dont have a base to build it off.
Im not gonna be suprised if this game is game of the year

Sat, 01/10/2009 - 16:15

Hm... I say NO. Give us a new storyline, other than KOTOR 2.

Sun, 12/14/2008 - 21:22

I was hoping for KOTOR III but TOR seems to offer some good material, I really hope they go into what happened to revan after KOTOR.
