So a buddy of mine said most guilds wont let you do OPs with them unless you get PvP gear pre-raid...is there a way to get good enough pre-raid prepped gear without pvping or is that how everyone is doing it?

Just get some purple mods from your dailies. That's at least good enough for story mode Eternity Vault and Karagga's Palace. If you can get the mats off some guildies or the GTN and have a crafting skill, you can build yourself a couple of rakata items, either relics or a belt/bracers. You can also buy implants and earpieces off the GTN. Especially for story mode, the bar is set pretty low. Just don't expect to do them with a bunch of level 47 greens.

If someone was talking about getting PVP gear before doing any sort of PVE content, they probably meant that you should get the PVP Recruit gear which is given to all level 50's for free at the PVP quest terminals. It's significantly better than what you got while leveling, and basically means that you can at least skip getting Tionese-quality PVE gear.

Other than that, there's not really any reason to get any PVP gear for PVE (in the past the PVP relics used to be the best relics also for PVE, but not anymore).
