thasensei
I don't totally understand the stat weights for tanking in PVP, and I'm hoping some of the knowledgeable people here can help me get a better grasp on things. Most of the comparisons that I've seen with regards to Expertise are for DPS, I haven't seen much with regards to tanking. Now, I know that this is a very simplistic example, but I'm trying to make sure that I understand how Expertise comes into play. I've taken shield/absorb out of this example since my understanding is that it only has a slight impact in PvP. It may very well be the case that the numbers in this example are overly simplistic, and that's screwing with the results. My PvE gear puts me at roughly: 27500 HP, 29% defense, 0% damage reduction Survivable damage: 38,732 (27500/0.71) If I were to use full augmented War Hero gear, I'd be at roughly: 22500 HP, 26% defense, 20% damage reduction Survivable damage: 38,006 (22500/.8/.74) So if this (very) simple example is even in the ballpark, wouldn't I actually have better (or at least similar) survivability in my PvE gear? I'm sure I'm missing something here since I've always heard that Expertise is king. Thanks in advance for any info! Arkillon
Technically you'd want to add the augments if not already done to your pvp gear, and also mod your gear around for ~30% defense and high endurance, to the cost of losing shield/absorb since yes, it does have slight impact. They might end up buffing tanks in pvp soon, I'd hope so.
CharterMonkKent
You'd melt pretty fast in pve gear since you would have 0 expertise. Also make sure you run in endurance augments.

Personally, I take the 20% rather than the 700 HP. Don't forget that against Force & Tech, your defense chances are totally ignored. So against this type of attacks, your math says : PvE => 27500 PvP => 28125 (22500/0.8) If you consider that half the damage is Melee/Ranged, and the other half is Tech/Force, the average survivability becomes : PvE => 33116 [(27500+38732)/2] PvP => 33065.5 [(28125+38006)/2] You'll have around the same average, with a difference in damage output. Thanks in advance for any info! it's generally better to heal through resists than hp. a 5k heal on someone with higher resists and lower hp is more effective(heals a higher percentage of their total effective health) than on higher hp and lower resists. there are exceptions where if burst is too high etc, but for the most part that's the way it is. Yes, and expertise increase the incoming healing, doesn't it ? Or it is the healing output... I don't know anymore.

thasensei
Thanks all for the input! So it sounds like, generally speaking, my PvE gear will give me about the same survivability as WH PvP gear will. The advantages to the PvP gear are that I'm easier to heal (damage is less spiky) and I'll dish out more damage (which for a guardian tank is negligible anyway). Is that about right? NotAnyOldName
Yeah apart from Expertise giving you damage reduction against players, and that is where expertise is vital for you if you want to participate in pvp as a tank (or any class).
