That was his force energy and he became a force spirit after that and wandered the galaxy until he could make it to his clone bodies.

The explosion was a concentration of Dark Side energy that had been collecting in Sidious' body. By their nature the Sith unbalance the Force by building and enhancing the Dark Side. The energy you saw unleashed was the Dark Side being freed and disbursed which restored balance to the Force.

He did not become a Force Ghost. A Force Ghost is something only a Jedi can become, and Sidious was not a Jedi. A Force Ghost occurs when a Jedi lets go of their attachments and willingly becomes a part of the Force. The Force rewards them by allowing them to keep their personality and individuality. Sidious became a Force Wraith which is something decidedly different from a Force Ghost.
