Noob guide?

Is there a good currently recommended PvP noob guide? I popped in to my first match today and had a lot of fun, I didn't even come in last for damage or otherwise, but it made it clear I should learn up before dragging many other teams down :)

A quick start type guide would be awesome as I am otherwise not a noob (I've PvE'd all classes 0-65 in this game and have extensive PvP time in other games, just not this one, just no swtor PvP until today.)

For class guides/utilities, Dulfy has decent guides. Class guides will all be altered shortly (if not already) due to 5.0 rework of all class utilities.

For objectives, SWTOR PvP objectives are really easy to understand. Here's a short break down copied from http://www.constantwarfare.com/2013/04/swtorpvp.html (added the Odessen bit myself due to age of guide, it's still accurate for other warzones)

Huttball – Similar to football where you try to be the first team to score 6 times by getting the ball into the enemy end zone.

Novare Coast – Teams fight over 3 gun emplacement objectives in a race to knock out the enemy bunker shield first. Possess 2 of the 3 guns to cause damage "tics" to your enemy shield bunker.

Civil War – Teams fight over three gun objectives trying to shoot down the enemy ship down first. Posses 2 of the 3 guns to damage your enemy team (same as Novare Coast).

Voidstar – Teams try to place bombs on the door objectives to get to the end as fast as possible. Three doors, 1 bridge, and 1 force-field between your starting point, and the datacore, all of which need to be channeled without interruption to progress.

Ancient Hypergate – Teams take control of pylons and run as many cubes to their team pylon as they can.

Odessen Proving Ground - Take control of cap points randomly activated from the 5 icons on the map and UI. Numerous power-ups are in place to aid you with various purposes such as; Activating a Cap Point to be controlled by your team. Deactivating a Cap Point currently controlled by the enemy team, Doubling the score generated by a Cap Point, and Increasing the Point Generation speed of a Cap Point.

Arenas - All of the arenas are a 4v4 (or anything less then 4 if someone on one side ragequits) deathmatch.

Numerous "Power-Ups" exist in all warzones of three natures; green cross-hairs above something loosely resembling a kolto station in tactical FPs which heals you, red cross-hairs over a box/ammo crate looking object that increases your damage, and a green icon over a slightly taller (then the other 2 objects) and more slender object that boosts your run speed. Learning the static locations of these in each WZ will improve effectiveness and enjoyment as well.

As with most PvP, CC-breakers (and learning when to use them), mobility, and your CC output abilities will vastly improve your enjoyment, and effectiveness in PvP.

Sorry if this seems poorly constructed, I'm half-asleep at work and am, by no means, a "pro". So, anyone can add or correct any of my information if you feel it needs it. Hope this helps.

Everything is very similar, with the addition of, and subtraction of in some cases, a few skills. The largest disparity between 4.0 and 5.0 would be the consolidation, and addition of the class utilities (where you spend your 8 points). But, as you said, you know PvE, have general PvP experience, so I'm sure you can figure out what utilities might need to be swapped up for PvP for your class. If all else fails, try a utility queue a match (not ranked as it's not a place for experiments), and if it doesn't work the way the tooltip reads, swap it up.

Good luck on your aspiring PvP career.

May RNGeesus be with you.

Civil War – Teams fight over three gun objectives trying to shoot down the enemy ship down first. Posses 2 of the 3 guns to damage your enemy team (same as Novare Coast).

This one is slightly off. You damage the enemy ship "X" amount for each gun you own, unlike NC (which, as you said, if you only have 1 gun you do no damage). This is why, in Civil War, there is a "point of no return" where you will often see people quit or go farm defender medals. Once "Team A" has twice as many points left as "Team B", then "Team A" only needs to maintain control of 1 turret to finish up with a win. The only way for "Team B" to win is to manage to take all 3 turrets for however long it takes to get back past that 1/2 way number. I've been on teams that have managed it, but it's very rare (it's rare even for people to try).

In NC though, there is no "point of no return" - if you can get that second turret from the enemy, even if they have you down to 2% (it ticks by 2% at a time, by the way), then they stop doing damage to you. So you don't have to 3-cap to win, no matter what the score is. (It's still rare to come back from a big deficit, but I think people keep trying longer).

Thanks for the tips. I've been avoiding it so far because knowing myself, PvP will probably grow to become almost the only way I play the game, once I start doing it. But now that I've consumed all the story content in the game, it's the natural next thing for me.

My advise to you would be just roll Merc/Mando GG

Ha! I was just beating on one with my skank jugg in a match and, yeah. I see what you mean. I thought *I* had good DCDs :)

Did much better though after reading up a bit. My team won and I was a bit higher than mid-pack for damage, healing and capture. Even got a MVP vote (probably from the sorc I was guarding). This is fun.

Yup, I discovered this last night on a Civil War match that was literally fought in the middle for the entire game. Each side had a single node - I had capped ours about 2 seconds before the Imps got theirs - everyone else spent the entire game fighting over the middle as I watched the two damage meter slowly tick away. We won that one my 20 points, because we started damaging their ship just a split second before they started hitting ours ...

I ranked near the bottom in the overall scoring for that game, but boy I felt good for capping that node when I did - noob luck and all.

Hey, and that's what it's about. You can't number and medal chase- you're playing the map right and it sounds like the timing helped your team win. Scoreboard is the scoreboard- I've seen someone max out DPS/Objectives score, rank first and be a terrible team player and we lost regardless because they were number chasing. The faster you cap nodes in Civil War, you can win if mid never gets capped as long as you were first. It's the little things that can help your team just as much, if not more than a high medal count and higher position.

"Sometimes" you can see some good twitch or YouTube vids of games. These can be good for newbies as it can show some more advanced tactics and also demonstrate what you've already read in written guides.

"Snave" does some good ones. He specialises in Operatives, but his tactics can often be applied to most classes and you'll also get an insight on how operatives work against you.

Just remember the name of the game is to win, not kill everything or get the highest numbers. Some of the best players like Snave might actually do less damage than a DPS farmer, but he probably contributed to the win a lot more than the DPS farmer.

Why is my name in inverted commas "Trixxie"?

Watch my game of the week series for some decent explanations on how maps work. First one is probably the most entertaining but contains the least explanation.

You can also search for swtorista's short guides to the maps. Although they are pretty much just explanations of mechanics per map that does sound like what he's looking for.

Well, it's begun. I spent all weekend doing solo unranked and now I don't really want to do much else (to the point that I'm levelling my non-70s in warzones instead of PvE now, too. )

I knew this would happen. Thanks again, everyone - the links and suggestions were exactly what I was looking for.

Because I wanted to highlight you as one of the better players 😘

Pvp is addictive, especially when pve becomes too easy and grinding. Nothing like that adrenaline boost from a match
