lecoufle
Hi everyone, probably a stupid question but I'm looking to get a new laptop which will probably have windows 8 on it, will SWTOR still run OK?
Oggthebase
it's difficult to know without knowing the exact specs, but in general, laptop are not very good for gaming because in order to fit into a small form factor, compromise must be made with performance (apart from top of the line super expensive laptops)

Adric_the_Red
Yep. I have a laptop that's a couple years old, and I use it occasionally for SWTOR. It runs just fine (though with the settings dialed back a bit). It's true that a laptop will be more expensive than a desktop with the same capability, but there are plenty of options for laptops that will run SWTOR very well. No need for top of the line or "super expensive". As for the Windows 8 question, that should also run SWTOR just fine. And if you're really paranoid about it, you can probably still find a laptop with Win7 on it and an option to "upgrade" to Win8 for $20 or less. (IOW, it comes with Win7 on it, and you pay in advance to be able to upgrade to Win8 later). Edited October 24, 2012 by Adric_the_Red
Oggthebase
the super expensive of the poor man is the cheap of the rich man. Please give out specs and specific figures.
anthemambient
Hi everyone, probably a stupid question but I'm looking to get a new laptop which will probably have windows 8 on it, will SWTOR still run OK? W8 may not be perfectly optimised for SWTOR since it's recently new.
redfurry
I just had to reinstall my computer because of a hard drive crash and decided to try Windows 8. SWTOR runs fine on it - about the same as it did on a newly installed Windows 7, I'd say.
Cyphen
I use my laptop for gaming and it's not super expensive. But you will not get much out of it. To play max settings for many new titles you will need a decent gaming laptop or you will suffer in performance. Laptops are not meant for gaming, or at least you will not get most out of it. @OP It should be fine, if not you can always install W7 if you buy it or few other ways. dosadnik
I've seen people playing on W8 so if you can't play that wouldn't be the problem. The specs would be though if they are not good enough. However considering it's a new one it is more than likely to run TOR.

If you don't mind playing lower than max settings, a new, reasonably priced laptop will be fine. I typically play on my HP Envy 6, which has an AMD A10 APU. I keep settings mostly at medium, but I do have the character level high. Of course, you can always tweak to the settings that work best for yourself. melodylane
I wouldn't buy a pc or laptop with Windows 8 on it as the sole OS right now simply because it is so new. You can't be sure that all the software you want to use will run on it correctly. Also when a OS comes out brand new fresh out the shop no matter what they say it is still in beta for at least the first year as they work bugs out and find new glitches/vulnerabilities that may have been missed. With all the new consumers who want the latest hotness, what better testing group could they find? No, if at all possible I would suggest a dual boot option with Windows 7 and 8. It's fairly easy to setup if you can find someone who knows how to do it and it will ultimately make your laptop more flexible to work with this way you will get the best of both worlds. Just my two cents anyway.
LostInReverie
I installed Windows 8 today, and it works fine. SWTOR plays without any problems. One problem I did have though, unrelated to the game, had to do with my antivirus software. Make sure it's updated after you upgrade or install or it could cause some weird issues. wabaadu
How in the world has anyone gotten windows8 to run SWTOR? I log in to character and it crashes every time. I had to buy a new laptop 2 weeks ago, and had no choice on OS, which pisses me off to begin with. Now SWTOR support won't respond to my concerns about having paid for game, and now not being able to play. So please if anyone has any suggestions on how to get logged in let me know please. Thanks, Troxter

Thanks, Troxter Dunno your laptop manufacturer, but lots of lap models have tons of bloatware on them. Get rid of it. Also, have terrible anti-virus, like mcaffee or that other big name one. Get rid of it. Get free stuff like Avast. Turn off the always on portion of any anti-vius, and make sure that launcher.exe and swtor.exe are exceptions in the anti-virus program. Next, set-up a second account to log in with. It eliminates a lot of the stuff that loads with your regular account. Make sure you've updated all the Win8 updates. Now try launching from the tile for SWTOR.
nacomaj
I have two gaming laptops and both of them run any game I want. I have an Asus G74Sx and a Sager and I run max settings on both with no problem. Not to stir arguments but you can play on an Laptop and enjoy just as good of performance as a desktop. Shaystar
I have Windows 8 on a desktop. Never crashed, no performance issues. If anything it feels just a little bit faster.

The key, imho, is plenty of RAM and a dedicated video chip, rather than on board video. Dell XPS17 here and i run on max as well, except on space missions. I have 8G of ram and the laptop has a geforce gt 555m. It's like 2 years old now. I'm sure there are faster boxes that are cheaper now than what I paid. I have SWTOR on my SSD on my laptop and on my raid 0 SSD array on my desktop, but I do not find its incredibly faster as a result.
Gidrea
You don't need a super expensive gaming laptop. My laptop is a Dell Inspiron, not a high end model, it was around $850. Intel i7 2.2GHz 8 GB RAM Nvidia 525M (2GB) Windows 7 64-bit I run everything on high, except I have shadows and nameplates turned off, mostly because they look funky. I get FPS consistently in the high 30s to low 40s. I get lag on the Fleet when there's 250 people there, but I know a lot of people who have that problem with higher end computers. Gidrea
Yes, I know, it's bad... but I hate to see people post "you can't play with a laptop" or "you can't play with a laptop unless it's super gaming system." It may not help the OP, but it might help someone out there. Oh, and I run McAfee, too, without problems. Washingtoon
I am not a fan of windows 8 and the new start screen in general but it runs all my applications/programs, including swtor, just fine. Isnt it supposed to be less ram hogging than previous windows? I've never ran win7 and win8 on the same computer so it's hard for me to compare them. I had win7 on my 1,5 year old "just above average" computer and win8 on my new gtx680 in SLI rig. Not sure how much the new ssd and the extra ram affect things. SandsOfArrakis
Well I have Windows 8 Pro on both my PC and laptop. SW TOR runs just as fast on Windows 8 as it did on Windows 7 Installing it on my laptop as I'm typing this. Should work like a charm too. Only issue I've had with Windows 8 is my E-SET anti-virus and firewall software. Internet connection was gone after upgrading. Even though Windows 8 said that there was a connection. Uninstalling and reinstalling E-SET fixed that problem. And it has been running fine ever since I'm very happy with Windows 8, and I see no reason whatsoever to go back to Windows
