likesixtyninjas
I’m not exactly new here to the game and story but I am new to some of the technical aspects of the game. That being said, I was making a name for my character and when I entered it, the message that the name was “invalid” popped up. Some people might answer saying “the name is taken”, but no. Generally when I enter a name that is taken, it says that the name is “unavailable”, NOT “invalid”. So I’m wondering why it says my name is invalid when it has no weird figures in it and it not specialized in any way. It’s a normal typed out 5 letter name. If anyone could answer as to why the message tells me my character name is “invalid” and how to fix it, that would be much appreciated. Once again, the message says the name is “invalid”, NOT “unavailable”.
HaltHammerzeit
There are some rules around what you can use in a name, such as you can't use names of a lot of the characters in SW and there's some profanity filtering as well. There's rules around symbols and spaces as well (only one space and one apostrophe) and I don't think numbers can be used either. There's most probably other stuff I'm not aware of that's causing your name to be registered as invalid.
SteveTheCynic
There are some rules around what you can use in a name, such as you can't use names of a lot of the characters in SW and there's some profanity filtering as well. There's rules around symbols and spaces as well (only one space and one apostrophe) and I don't think numbers can be used either. There's most probably other stuff I'm not aware of that's causing your name to be registered as invalid. Yen'reerr'traa would like to pick a bone about your "only one apostrophe" thing, and in fact the list of permitted special characters is: * Only one space. * At least two letters in each sub-element. * Sub-elements can be separated by a space, a hyphen, or an apostrophe. Be-bop'alula is valid, or was when I created the character. * No consecutive specials (Arl'-anta is not allowed, but Arl'anta and Arl-anta aren't caught by this rule). * No specials at the beginning of a name. 'arlanta is not allowed. * No digits. * Accented letters (sometimes erroneously called "special characters" - they are ordinary, thanks - or "alt-codes" - I can type most of them without resorting to the Alt key) are allowed, but not at the beginning of a name. Certain words aren't allowed, as indicated, because they are: * Rude(1) * Political * Names of characters in Star Wars ***or*** in other universes (e.g. long ago someone complained about "Phoenix" being invalid, and it went back and forth for quite a while before someone (modesty forbids me to say who it was) mentioned the superhero identity of Jean Gray (?Grey).) * Names of certain locations in SWTOR and/or other bits of Star Wars (and I have one character who should be invalid because she shares her name with a small cave on Voss). * Certain "common" words. Havelock The'dane is invalid because it contains "The" as a separatable element. * Some common personal names, such as Alice. * In-game titles (not caught by the name filter, usually). Some of these are caught by the name filter, some are caught only when people report them. (1) And yes, the name filter does suffer from the Skunnthorpe problem (i.e. that of embedded rude words being called out). "Skunnthorpe" is a deliberate mis-spelling of the name of a town in northern England - the part "kunnt" is an alternative spelling of what is essentially the rudest word in British English, and it causes problems when web sites apply "stupid" profanity filtering to "Enter the name of your city" boxes. I got caught by this when a character name contained, in order and consecutively, the letters of the common name for "non-consensual sex" inside a larger word. (French "Nulle part" = "nowhere" but mushed into one word and spelled backwards.)
abrakhocus
Also, if the preceding list wasn't exhaustive enough, some names are also reserved by the Devs for future NPCS.
