I have a lvl 50 smuggler scoundrel and I really like the look of the battlemaster gear for him but not war hero. I can put the war hero mods into the battlemaster gear without any trouble right?

You will have to exchange the bm shells in order to get your wh heat but you can at valor rank 60 wear orange shells of the bm armor that you can pop war hero mids into. Alternately there's always grinding the key bm pieces twice (chest, helm, maybe legs). Can always use the mod from them with a pve armoring in an orange belt/bracer so the grind feels less aesthetic only in that regard.

The belts don't make a lot of difference visually, and bracers are not visible at all with gloves for most classes, so valor 60+Crafted Shell+WH Mods is the way to go, IMO.

Well just have someone craft you the empty shells as the BM set you will be getting you will need to turn in.
