You missed something. Firstly, as land squids they have tentacles, which have suckers, so they don't need thumbs. Secondly, they are a very old species, they have explored, invented, and now want very little to do with anyone who isn't Gree. They used to have four castes, but two the scientists and crafters are gone, but they still have the technology they invented and developed.
