I seem to recall reading somewhere that there is a bonus for each character you have in your legacy - is that true? If so, what is the bonus? Do the characters have to be of a certain level or is it sufficient that they are just there?

Different unlocks.

Get them for finishing chapters of your story. Finishing Companion Quests. Buy em with credits.

So you get a bonus to presence when you complete a companions questline that affects the whole legacy?

afaik that is how it works. if it stacks with the more companions you complete no clue.

The legacy bonuses (that can't be bought) are as follows:

 

 

1. Any class that you get to Chapter 2 will grant you a class /emote, and that class buff can be applied from other characters in your legacy as well. The buff does not stack with the buff of the same type on the opposite faction.
   
2. Any class that you get to Chapter 3 will grant you a legacy ability which you can use while utilizing a Heroic Moment.
   
3. Accessing all conversation options on a companion (approximately 8900-9500 affection) will reduce your Heroic Moment cooldown by one minute and increases its duration by 12 seconds. You can only receive one of these perks from one Healer, Melee DPS, Ranged DPS, Melee Tank, and Ranged Tank companion. This results in a total of +1min duration and -5min cooldown.
   
4. Accessing all conversation options on a companion (approximately 8900-9500 affection) will grant +10 presence. This can stack up to 40 times for all 40 companions for a total of +400 presence (not including Human species unlock).
