Developer Update: Heroic Space Missions

three suggestions:

1. Co-operative Missions. This is an MMO, part of the fun is being able to play with friends. Missions that allow for multiple players to participate would be a huge improvement.

2. Gunners. I think we all remember the moment in Star Wars when Luke hops into a gun turret and blasts tie fighters while Han flies. I do, and I'm sure you do too. Currently ship combat feels pretty wooden, partially because of the rail system, and partially becuase it's a solo operation. Allow players to add gun turrets to their ship ala the Millenium Falcon. Then they can staff those turrets with their companions. Maybe add a gunnery/piloting skill for pc's and companions. The recent HK mission allows for multiple players to be in the same ship, maybe let multiple players team up in the same ship? If you need inspiration think WWII B-17 runs.

3. Tie Space Missions with Instances/Quests. At the moment space missions exist in a vaccuum, not just in space, but in the game as well. They aren't connected to anything. There are missions where players have to fly somewhere and board a ship. How about elaborating on that. A mission requiring space combat before entering the space station or ship would add an extra dimension to the game. Adding a group/raid sized space fight would be amazing.

I doubt much will happen with any of these suggestions, but you can't blame a guy for trying.

"Our primary focus for the Space Missions in Star Wars™: The Old Republic has always been to make the player feel like they were taking part in the much larger Star Wars struggle, while still playing a pivotal and individual role in an encounter’s success. With that in mind, we are going to be introducing a number of new Heroic missions in Game Update 1.6 for both Imperial and Republic players available at level 50."

The space portion of the game is still on rails... so no. You still don't make the player feel like its any part of some major conflict. Instead, you make them feel like they're on a roller coaster ride. If you would've listened to the player base during beta about how ****** a minigame it was to even include (since it was a SLAP IN THE FACE to any star wars gamer), maybe this update would've had a -real- impact.

I've played the new missions, I applaud that you made it much faster paced then the earlier versions... HOWEVER. It's still on rails and destroys the actual fun of dog fighting.

Until you wake up and get the space end of the game off rails, make it cooperative, add in gigantic space battles (though I forsee that turning into ilum part 2... that's the faith I have in the development team)... You will not win over anyone.

please just make the fights understandable and objectives and enemies visable

half the time in space missions it takes 4 or 5 runs just to figure out what was shooting me and then how to counter it.

it seemed to me the hard missions are hard because they are a cluster like the escort mission where you had to go to the message bords to figure out what was going on and how to stay alive because on screen its displayed horribly and that makes it very hard to improve

from what ive seen from pts its just more of the same cluster and horrible visibility on objetives

Sadly it looks like that no fun etc I don't do them now and prolly won't once it goes live other then to see if they are worth the time to do, most won't do them and some will love them most won't ...

I'm Pro Heroic Space Combat coming soon but as stated in the article, sounds miss leading:

Many spacers enjoy the serenity of the stars, the peace of floating through the Unknown Regions, wondering if they’re seeing events and phenomena never before witnessed by intelligent life.

Funny, this sounds more of an open-space zone. Why are they giving us more rail-shooters?

However I still can't wait for these new missions!

Still with the rails. What on earth is the point of these things? Something else to do to grind comms when companions break or your class is nerfed to death for pvp.

The point of them is to keep the players occupied and have fun while they are working on the space expansion which is the space project.

DUH! :p

I guess that I'm one of the few people here that actually loves space missions, so I'm very happy to see new developments in this area. I'd love to see more expanded game mechanics there too (e.g. free flight or multi-person missions - with allies or direct PvP), but I'm happy to see new on-rails missions too. Sure, it's an arcade, but it's a good one.

However the thing that I find most confusing is that they are called "Heroic" missions. Since there is no mention of these being 2-4 person missions, wouldn't it be better to call them Hard Mode missions? (Or something in that fashion?)

Also, there are a few outstanding issues with space missions, some of which can be very easily fixed (well, I can only assume, but I'm still fairly certain about that...). I created tickets for some them back in February 2012, but I didn't see any mention of them being addressed.

If you can, please support/discuss ideas in this thread: http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?t=562165

Please discuss them here, in the original thread or create a new threat for them, if you wish. My only hope is to get mods' attention to those problems, as I'm concerned that if these are not actioned within the space-focused 1.6 patch, we'll wait another year for them to get fixed.

Thanks,

M.

I do actually enjoy space missions, not repetitively but I like them on occasion.

However, the current ones are WAY too easy, even with sub-optimal level/gear. Hope these new ones give me a run for my money.

And yeah, I know this is just to give us something to chew on while waiting for the SSSP, but... I'll take it.

fail Bioware just Fail, REALLY!!

this space combat is just FAIL in SWTOR, at the release we thought that we are going to fly a ship but nope, the normal ship is just click +choose planet then get out, Space combat is more like 70-90 games, while we are in 21 century, freaking lame.

this is how a real space combat should look like

this is just a mini game, they are working on the SSSP

So...is it just a lot of objects blocking objectives....because that's what it looks like...

I'm not really insterested at all in this modern day Star Fox ....here's to hoping the SSSP brings some free roam.

Starfox had at least 2 "free range" missions. So no.

Starfox was more advanced than this.

FYI. It is and was always advertised as a mini game. It's our only one at that, and it's a pretty damn good one too. Would rather 1 mini game, or none? And these missions will always be here. Even if sssp comes to light these will always be available so get over it.

I don't understand the mentality of "I don't like, take it out of the game." I don't care for pvp, but I'm not in the pvp forum asking it to be removed.

I never really got into the space missions in this game. Personally the space content isn't nearly as important to me as the main game, so the fact that EA just turned it into a mini-game never bothered me. Don't get me wrong I would love for an awesome space simulator on top of the game I already paid for, but it isn't necessary in my opinion.

Star Wars has never been about space exploration, and its space combat is more like World War 2 air combat and dog fights. They for the most part have accomplished that, though a cool pvp space warzone would be sweet. At any rate I don't see the need or the desire for free roaming space game, this ain't Star Trek people. I'd rather those resources be used for improving the main game.

Suggestions for the future of SWTOR space.

Keep the rail missions if you want some single fly through missions, but you need to do:

Full 3d simulator....if SWG could do it, so can you Bioware. Player pilots like 3d over rail...anyday

Guild Captial ships as you have promised.

PVP warzones for space

flashpoint 4 man and 8 man op group for space

multi-player ships for use in pvp warzones, and or flashpoints

dogfighter ships (multiple ships you can own and customize)

Flashpoints that use both space and ground within the mission.

All are doable. Make it a massive expansion and you will make plenty of cash off it, and revive your subscriber base to the opening of the game levels.

1 more suggestion

Alternate pilot levels and or classes...Gives those 50s something to work on...:-)

(You could say have some pilots more experienced in gunning, or bombing, and some more advanced in their flight abilities or targeting) This could come in handy for multi-player ships needing a crew.

Just my 2 creds....

Keep on the rail system and see the game fail in this regard which will make it fail in the long run. This isn't wow, its Star Wars...We as players deserve the best experience a STAR WARS game has to offer.
