Stand and Deliver

Based on my RL lack of Twitch skills, I find the best classes for me are the ones that require the least amt of movement (eg; Trooper Gunnery, BH Merc Arsenal). I already have high lvls in these, plus the Sith Sorcerer.

While looking into the Origin stories of all the classes, I am wondering if the IA or Smuggler has such a Specialization available? While the Sniper sounds like it could be stationary, is this truly the case? Any other Classes or Specs that allow for less movement in combat? Live ones, that is....?

Snipers (IA) and Gunslingers (Smugglers) are stationary "turrets" or "glass cannons." 75% of our moves are only available in cover, and while you are in cover, you can't move.

That being said, the three specs have some degree to which they use cover:

  • Sharpshooters / Marksman use cover the most (almost 100% of the time.) Almost all of the main moves require you to stay in cover. Also, the big defensive cooldown for Sharpshooter is a buffed Hunker Down / Entrench, which provides immunity from CC but you must stay still in cover for the entire time. The Sharpshooter / Marksman can also take the skill that gives them 1 extra energy per second while in cover. The only time I see Sharpshooters / Marksman out of cover is to use their stun, to recharge Ballistic Dampers and Snap Shot (which five buffs upon entering cover,) and to avoid certain boss's AOE.
  • Saboteur / Engineering uses cover most of the time. Half of our main moves require cover; the other half do not. In 2.0, we gained some more mobility, with one of our two biggest cooldowns Scambling Field / Ballistic Shields now not requiring cover. (Our other big cooldown - Sabotage and EMP Discharge - just resets the cooldown on all other defensive moves and can heal us.) We get to gain health while in cover, but gain free Quick Shots / Overload Shots for 15 s after leaving cover. Saboteurs / Engineers want to stay in cover most of the time, but are not restricted by the use of cover.
  • Dirty Fighting / Lethality does not have to use cover. All of their main moves do not require cover. Their big defensive cooldown Defense Screen / Shield Probe is available out of cover. They do not gain any passive defensive benefits to cover.

In conclusion, I believe that Sharpshooter / Marksman and Saboteur / Engineering Gunslingers / Snipers are the best "Crouch and Deliver" classes. Their greatest ability - cover - requires them to stay still. I preferred Saboteur both because it revolves around using cool tech gadgets and because it gave me some mobility when necessary but mainly involved staying put.

The three mainly stationary ACs are Commandos / Mercenaries, Sages / Sorcerers, and Gunslingers / Snipers. Some people have said that Vanguard / Powertech tank specs and Assault Specialist / Pyrotech can be semi-stationary.

PS: Check out my signature. I prefer stationary classes: my least favorite class so far is the Marauder due to all the running around to get to enemies.

Thanks for the tips!

I recall in Beta that locating and getting in Cover could be problematic. Is this smoother now? I ask for the same reasons; poor Twitch skills.

I only played late Beta and getting into cover is about the same: fairly easy to do if there is some around. Problem is: there isn't a lot around at upper levels. You can still use your Cover Screen and get most of the same benefits. Only weird part about cover is rolling 10 yards away off camera to a cover spot you did not see when you wanted to just crouch in place with the Cover Screen. You can use Shift-F to force a crouch in place.

Also if you look in the IA ability roster there is a Crouch ability that will always either crouch you in place or pull your cover screen up, Really handy!

Just use the "crouch" skill, as opposite to "Take cover" skill. It's the green icon in your Agent/Smuggler skill tab. Denies rolls when you don't need them - you just take a knee and you're ready to fire instantly.

Alternatively, bind a key to "take cover in place" under Targetting (I think).

This is bound to Shift+F by default. The regular cover is bound to F. Don't put the Cover and Crouch buttons on your toolbar: you will want to be able to get into and out of cover at a moments notice.

first thing i did on my gunslinger and sniper was reverse taht binding. i want to cover in place when i hit f, and only roll to cover when i hit shift+f. i find myself covering in place 80% of the time unless it's some scripted encounter where good regular cover is guaranteed in the area anyway.

Not entirely true. Series of Shots is still a good move, and still locked into cover. Aside from that, yes, no need for cover. But it's still nice, otherwise you'll have people interrupting Cull and Orbital Strike when you need them.
