The other thing, just a small insignificant detail, we have to remember is that the games been live for 7 days and its been -1 days since official launch. So, i bet they're working on it. I do think that the "newness" of the game is slowing the queues down. I find myself wandering around questing much more than pvp'ing. The situation might fix itself when people hit 50. With nothing left to do but craft, raid and pvp, the times will go down.

as far as choosing realistically, for the most part, the light/darkside decisions are geared towards your faction, the sith mostly have 1 lightside answer and 2 darksides, and opposite for jedi sometimes its 1dark 1 light 1 that does nothing....like goggles hope that helps
