While companions are nice, shouldn't players be more self reliant? I recently started playing within the last 2 weeks and what I found was that my player was barely doing enough damage to survive a normal 4-5 enemy pull on Dromund Kaas(spell check). The companion is in his own world and does his job tanking 1 enemy at a time, while my character is getting slaughtered. Again I am new, and I have tried several different class combinations and all of my characters are below level 20.
Also the real problem I have as I'm sure every other player has, is that the companion is clickable and always gets in the way of everything no matter what your camera zoom is. Whether you are trying to click a quest giver, vendor, or even trying to loot a recent kill, the companion always has something to say because you always accidentally click it first. It would be nice if the companion was only clickable in cantinas which is the only place you should have to talk to them anyway.
