You can use the printscreen button to take screenshots, and it usually ends up in a folder in My Documents for Star Wars: The Old Republic > Screenshots.

However, printscreen tends to not always work with cinematics. I use Fraps to take more reliable screenshots, and there is a free version of it.

I haven't done it myself, but it should be as easy as replacing the existing splash screen screenshot. On my system, it's found in:

Computer -> Local Disc (C -> Program Files (x86) -> Electronic Arts -> BioWare -> Star Wars - The Old Republic -> swtor -> retailclient -> Loading Screens

At that location, you'll find a JPEG image of the Splash Screen. I imagine that replacing it would be as simple as moving the existing picture to another folder (or deleting it entirely), and replacing it with another image of your choice, preferably one of the same size.

They would have no way of knowing that you did it, so even if it's against the rules it's OK to do.

That's a good rule in life: if it's against the rules but *impossible to enforce*, don't worry about the rules.

It's completely allowed. They would not have allowed PCgamer to post an article about it if it wasn't.

One thing I've read is that you sometimes need to redo the new image as new updates will overwrite it.

I can confirm this: I have been using the original loading screen instead of the Rise of the Hutt Cartel one since 2.0 came out and had to redo my loading screen every update. I just keep a copy called "LoadingScreen-Backup" in the same folder and copy paste rename it while I am waiting for the game to load after the update. (You can change your LoadingScreen while the game is running.)

If you dig down in these forums, I posted a guide with a link to the original loading screen here: http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?t=685741
