why are people freaking out about Ilum in 1.7?

The game launched with pve servers STILL having pvp zones. Therefore a 100% pve server never existed in this game.

If pvp content is added to these pvp zones it means it is pvp content. 100% pve players can choose to do exactly what they do now: not participate in open world pvp. This game has had nothing but pve content added to it's open world and pve players gladly ignored the tears of players wanting content added to the already exiting open world pvp content. Now they have to suck it up and accept that Ilum will get content additions ... something everyone has already been told about for a year.

Open world pvp is often a hybrid of pve and pvp as it is an extension of the game world concept and theme. Pve content added to pvp zones = pvp content. There are players who hate raids yet you don't see them campaigning to take them out of the game. They simply can choose not to participate.

People who have chosen that should not be forced to take part in Open world PvP if the content is aimed at PvE progression (as this seems to be as its for the Gree faction).

And that is an important point, from what we know so far this is not a PvP event, its an event that is being placed in a PvP area. The event is about facing a PvE foe in the Gree spaceship and gaining Gree Reputation which is also PVE content.
I have to agree with this. People roll on a specific server because it reflects how they want to play the game. Of course there are those who like a blanced approach so there is nothing wrong with a PVE server having PVP areas and PVP servers offering PVE content. The key to me is that no player should be forced to play content not to their liking.

Often time devs (in all MMOs) will try to force players into doing a certain type of content. That never seems to work and ends up with people bypassing more and more of the game. Content becomes fractured and exclusive and at a certain point players start to leave which is never a good thing.

As I remember from way back when, pvp was touted as being available to pvp and pve players in the sense that pvp gear would give only a 5% or so advantage over pve gear. So people in equivalent pve gear would have a chance. With the effect of expertise, I do not believe that is the case. I have done pvp in other games and to some degree enjoyed it, but I am a pve player by heart. I do not think that I want to maintain two sets of armor (one for pve and one for pvp). I also don/t want to hear my wifes comments after a premade group jumps her and stomps her to death and then camps her body.

We actually love Ilum and think it is breath taking in visual impact. We do the dailies there (pure pve) as ofthen as we can. If the new content has requied or unescapeable pvp we will not be doing it. It will just make us more likely to watch new MMOs as they are launched and try to find one as a new home. Indeed, new game content will not please all of the players. But there should be enough for everyone over time and in different patches. If not, as noted, content updates become exclusive and end up motivating people to move on to another game.

*sigh*
Ilum Eastern (the area with dailies) will still remain flag-free on PvE, as will all other planets, so no need to panic.

The Western Shelf (the area with the new event) has always been an auto-flag area, so by coming there, you know you can get PvP'ed. You are notified of this by huge red text over your screen, and you will land in a safe zone, so you can quickly get back to where you came from and hide.

People just assume that because there seems to be a faction and quests that may concern some big NPC in this event, it is pure PvE.

if you pve'rs are so sad about being ganked on what ever ice shelf it is go on the server forum for YOUR server and get your imperial police force ready, and also republic police force... i am sure there will be pvp players who dont mind protecting you as you go to and from quest areas...

get your self a armed escort...

better idea... you in PvE guild correct get your 16 man raid together what you use to do NIM EC (or your larger group you might use to do Section X) boss on max difficulty to do the quest and then invite friends who want to do quest...
... team of operatives would do fine aswell... or assassins just focus target and get a good healer

Ilum is a PvP planet, PvP or PvE server. Deal with it.

Since we don't know I'm posting with the assumption that this event is in the PvP "Contested" zone for a reason and will contain possible PVP actions.

What makes everyone automatically assume that the event is a "PvE" Event? (Let's set aside the ridiculous logic that gamers can only like PvP or PvE for a moment)

Explore Ilum's contested area in the Western Ice Shelf to uncover the mysterious purpose of the Gray Secant, an enormous ancient Gree starship.
Get ready to face a powerful opponent that awaits you at the center of this ancient vessel.
Earn exclusive Gree technology, including highly-advanced weapon and armor!
Look for opportunities to join this recurring event throughout the rest of the year.

I don't see anywhere in there where it says this is a PvE event...

In WoW there was a zone where the goal was to fight NPC's and take towers , eventually killing a NPC boss to win and obtain points for gear. In LOTRO there is an persistent area where the goals are to take castles and outposts from NPC's Fighting to a NPC boss to hold it, gaining you skills, perks, gear and more. In DAoC There was a persistent zone where the goal was to take keeps and eventually a fortress from NPCs to obtain a relic for buffs or to access a dungeon in which you fought NPCs for loot. In Guild wars 2 there is a persistent zone where you fight your way into NPC controlled towers and castles to obtain points and server wide buffs that assist in dungeons and crafting. Heck in Pre 1.2 SWTOR there was an area where you could battle against NPCs while gathering resources for the story based war effort.

In all of these zones there are opposing factions of players fighting your NPCs for the same goals you are fighting theirs, and often both player groups clash on the battle field. There are also quests one can take in these zones from NPCs that could involve no direct combat with another player. However when you go into those zones you are agreeing to PvP. There is no surprise when you join, you know you are going to a PvP area.

No one would say that these zones were PvE Event zones. Just because there are NPCs there, faction points, gear, or items won within the zone does not make it a PvE zone. By going to this area you are fighting for items from a PvP faction by participating in a PvP event and winning PvP rewards! If you don't want to participate in PvP then don't go there.

Just because you like the look of the Warhero gear and want to use it in PvE does not mean that it is PvE content and you are now forced to do PvP to obtain it. It is PvP content. Like this event. With a PvP reward.

I miss the days where we were just gamers, and everyone could enjoy all aspects of a game together. Now we have to split ourselves into groups...

Ive checked outlaws den on the pve server and its empty all time...
ive observed people heading this direction ( some for HK parts ) and then immediately leaving zone once they get their autoflag-message...and then they say "nevermind.. i already have eough companions"

this should be a message to bioware... peopel are obviosly dont want to PvP withing their PvE time.. atleast a majority of them

I miss the days where Overgeared players didnt kill lowbies all time just for the lulz.

I myself need to avoid Warzones at weekends because at this day.. almost everyone who has good gear plays in republic team.. and me and my imp friends getting 2-4 hit...

Actually i play only warzones at times where not so many peopel are online because at this time there are more players online who have gear similiar to my own gear.

Im so tired of all the Veteran players who easily kill you and then laugh and discredit you.

I play this for fun, and getting overkilled has nothign to do with fun, neither with challenge...

sry im not a masochist...

Thank God nothing in 1.7 is forced upon anyone then. I think it's great that Bioware is maintaining the freedom of choice for players

That was never. Even in MUDs people ganked. It's a bad part of the Human psyche.

Having said that it's not that scary these days, if you're killed in outlaws den the worst that can happen is you may have to respawn at the nearest base. In the old day you would lose exp, maybe lose a level and could be full gear and coin looted.
Real Star Wars space combat please, not Star Wars Fox! Maybe some PvP and flight too?
