Question about Endgame Gearing vs Enjoying Story/Other Aspects of the game

So I'm taking a break from Star Trek Online which is a game where Gear is secondary to trying out new builds/ships/hilarious fun tricks and missions since getting powerful equipment is fast and easy (AS in so cheap and plentiful that the pursuit of wealth is no longer a problem). I wanted to know if by level 50 or 55 if I plan to just use Orange Armor sets with blue planetary commendation mods, will I have:

1. Sufficient Firepower to destroy the enemy quickly and efficiently?

2. Sufficient Defenses to survive attacks and recoup for another attack run on the enemy?

3. The comfort in knowing my equipment is sufficient enough and I can take my focus off gearing and focus on exploration, story, and boldy going where no man has gone before? (story, flashpoints, taking in the sights, trying out new builds every day) ?

Before you reach endgame using gear or mods above prototype (blue) level is not necessary, of cause it helps but you don't NEED it to progress through the story, heroics and story mode Flashpoints. Endgame group content such as level 55 HM Flashpoints and operations will require you to be in better quality gear but as you progress through the FPs, PvP, daily planets etc. you'll get the commendations you need to purchase the higher level gear fairly easily anyway.

You can actually purchase decent level Artifact/Epic (Lvl 58) mods for gear at level 50 with just the Planetary Comms that you get from leveling by talking to the Makeb Comm Vendor on your respective fleet. While you won't be able to completely deck out your character with the current max of 100 Comms you can gear him more then half-way and fill in the later portions as you pick up more Comms from random questing. Or go back to the beginning planets and solo all the herioc quests to restock your supply.

After that you can just do random dailies at 55 for Basic Comms to purchase gear with Lvl 66 mods or the lvl 50 dailies at Section X or Black Hole for lvl 61-63 mods. Basically with minimal effort and just a little time you can easily get a character geared out enough that you can place him on hold to go do random things.

Actually, you can actually craft level 63's now too which means that you can also gear yourself or purchase from the GTN as well. Obviously, crafting for yourself is time consuming and the GTN is pricer credit-wise but the options are there for if/when you get sick of grinding for those level 63's which makes going for those 66's much easier if you want.

Just thought I'd point that out because it's not an option that a lot of folks remember when they get to the end content progression track but comes in handy when you just need that one or two pieces and don't want to have to go through a whole day of dailies yet again before moving on.

I really appreciated your post. I want to explore planets and crafting my own gear and doing legacy achievements. All this focus and grinding for gear frustrates me. Originally I was on a PvP server and had to endure getting smacked around in warzones just to get the Partisan gear. Finally, I decided to change to an RP-PvE server. Hopefully I can now enjoy the game the way that I want.

I was about to post a thread questioning this, so ill make it here:

Its realy possible have high end game mods JUST USING CREDITS ON GTN?

Im asking this for many reasons, but mostly because its ease for me farm credits then comendations (by selling CM on GTN).

makeb planetary comms gear 58 will be enough for most 55 daylies and 50 HM flashpoints ans solo stories

but it will be very hard to run 55 HM flashpoints and group will certainly consider you undergeared

so if you consider running end game froup content (55 HM flashpoints and operations) you'd better grinf basic comms for 66 purple basic gear

besides, in 66-69 gear you can solo some of the group contant too (bounty kingpin contracts or CZ-198 SM flashpoints or GSI Heroics2)

There is only 3 classic & 1 to 2 hybrid working builds per character here.

On some characters there is even less... not that you cant use them at leveling ... but they are away from efficient.

Story ... go with new characters from 1 to 50/55 if you want story... class & planetary story till 50 is very good one.

Power to kill & survive - it is same as STO, Cruiser could survive much more than Escort (don't speak about stacking cool-downs builds that require real money or year grind) but have less spikes and less overall DPS. So depend on class and role - if you play tank you will kill them slow but will be able to survive much more than if you play glass cannon dps class as gunslinger/sniper.

Knowing equipment - if not clear from character codex sheet - Google have it all.

Last but not least, companions here are way different than BOs in STO.

They use gear as characters do, have pre-defined bunch of skills and roles (healer, tank, DPS), currently tanking ones are worst ... but for some characters are still needed.

About commendations - at 50 you may grind some for Makeb items ... after that just keep money/mats if crafter to get blue 66 at 53 level.

Companions - green items on same level is enough at the beginning.
