Saurrantion
So I guess I can't create a new character cause every single name is taken. I mean coming up with off the wall crap. Whats the point in having surnames if we can't get a first name.

Saurrantion
Im not using common names. Heck I even did one called Sythen'a and it was all ready taken. I mean why not allow use to have same first name but not same last names just like in real life. It stupid that I have to take some retarded name I hate because nothing pass the name check. AlexDougherty
You might want to try names from another series, I've had some luck with names for a specific race from Babylon5 tv series, but names from books and mythology should work too, as long as they are not too mainstream. Elly_Dawn
once again im gonna reiterate how this can all be fixed if they went with an ID Number system, it worked with great sucess in Phantasy Star Online, honestly the name registration is dated and seriously needs to go, give us an ID# for each character we make and let us have whatever name we choose without restrictions... AndasKastor
I do wish they could re-seed the random name generator or something. A lot of the names it comes up with are taken - not to mention I see a lot of repeats when I am cycling through.
Malastare
If only Bioware had some tool that could help you pick universe-consistent names.... Maybe like... A random name generator or something.... Now, granted, the RNG doesn't exclude already-taken names like it should. However, I've never had any problems making one or two letter variations of something given to me by the RNG. And the bonus: My names actually feel Star Warsy, rather than a cheap mimicry of some other universe ( If you're trying to copy some Star Wars name (Malak... Mallak... Mall'ak... M'llack....), yeah, you're going to have problems. Also, jerks like me will report you for violating the naming rules. If you're hoping to be the first clever soul to pick "Emochick" or "Skullsmasher" then I guess you're just out of luck. Or maybe you're in luck. Those names are lame anyway. DAWUSS
Google "Star Wars Name Generator" Generate a huge list and pick one you like. Or you could try the in game generator and tweaking it into something that you like. Some of them sound lame, but with a few tweaks don't sound all that bad. I am Álec Fortescue and I am happz with it. Especially with in-game font nicely covering the grave accent. Shame my name was stolen by a name squatter and i had to rename after transfers. Whats the point in having surnames if we can't get a first name. Yup, They should have made legacy names unique and regular names non-unique. So you would be addressing everyone by surname. Would have been much better. Oh noes 2 guys named Luke, the horror, oh the horror... Copy paste some of those and voila Sry for the big column, nasty ctrl c ctrl v. Socialist
I name all my characters after Russian literature, 19th century anarchists or 19th century socialists. It seems there are few people educated in such subjects playing SWTOR, so I usually don't run into problems. My main is Darth Bakunin, then I have Alieksiei Karamazov, Trotsky, Tolstoy, Kautsky etc... Edited January 13, 2013 by Socialist

Kalfear
So I guess I can't create a new character cause every single name is taken. I mean coming up with off the wall crap. Whats the point in having surnames if we can't get a first name. Strange, after using my 5 goto names that ive used over last 21 years in MMORPGs, I was able to use random generator until I found one I liked for my Sage. Then I created another for my Guardian Have yet to have a name rejected in TOR Its really not hard to come up with names, just dont base them off already established characters from sci fi and fantasy. Cause more then likely they already been used and abused and twisted into every thinkable modification. But here Illl make it easier I want you to think up 3 5 or more letter names then take the first 4 letters from the first name (make sure you have a vowel in there) add a ' then take 2 letters from the second name (Make sure you have a vowel in there) add a ' then take 3 letters from the final name (make sure you have a vowel in there Add it togather and there you go, a completely original name that passes the smell test of the TOS stating no nonsense names. In fact thats EXACTLY how I did my guardian. Have even gotten complements on the name for its originality You can get a name You just cant get the name from popular fantasy and sci fi Be creative and make your own name. Dont use a common name then Shhhhhhhh!!! We will have none of that common sense talk here mister! heh
JediMB
I haven't had too much trouble at least finding alternate versions of the names I've wanted. And that's without using any accents, since I know people from certain countries have trouble typing characters with accents. What really bothered me was that the character creator won't let you pick names with three of the same character in a row. You know, like Wookiee planet "Kashyyyk" has three y's. It's definitely a restriction that could stand being changed.

Jamagh
I made a trooper the other day, named Nacl. Why that? Sodium Chloride. Or commonly Salt. Why name him that? Maybe his parents had a weird sense of humour. Maybe they did not realize that his name would have the elemental symbols for those elements. Either way, it is a good name. Try combining elements from the periodic table of elements. You can come up with some good names. Had one person ask me what element my name was. It made me smile to know there was someone else out there with some intelligence.
annabethchase
Yes, but what if they don't say anything in chat and you want to whisper them? And they're not in your friend list nor guild? Then likely they aren't looking for a whisper from you. A little privacy is a good thing. It actually cuts down on griefing if they can't figure out your name to type it in. You've just given the perfect reason for why already taken names should still be in the generator. You can still use them as inspiration or with a tweak to spelling to obtain a SW-themed name for your character. Foreign characters are a pain for those without a keyboard layout that allows for them, so I wouldn't go with Alec's recommendation of using accented and other types of characters, unless they are integral to your own language and those of your fellow gamers. Too excluding otherwise.

Diablo_Cow
Ever since FTP hit the servers, all of my characters without alt code letters have been spammed ad nauseam (even with Latin names and phrases) so any new character I create I put at least one alt code that isn't noticeable, whisper a guildy for an invite and I'm set. I try reporting all of the credit farmers thy spam chat, mail, and whispers. It seems like there is only one on the Jedi Covenant, but it is an annoying bastard. Galbatorrix
I just use Alt codes. For instance, I have a character names Drakårus. I've never been rejected for a name when using these and if you use the same ones each time, the codes become really easy to remember.
