I never understood why Lucas never did this aside from perhaps his ego and unwillingness to budge on the altered edition, Greedo shot first, etc. Disney probably has no such reservations. JacenHallis Posted December 6, 2012 Share Posted December 6, 2012 Chances are slim, unless Disney actually takes film preservation seriously and doesn't try to pass off the SE as the original, like Lucas did to the Library of Congress. While both STAR WARS (1977) and THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK (1980) are on the National Film Registry, the Library has not yet acquired new prints of either one. When the request was made for STAR WARS, Lucasfilm offered us the Special Edition version. The offer was declined as this was obviously not the version that had been selected for the Registry. We have not yet requested a print of THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, added to the Registry late last year. The Library of Congress does hold the original release versions of STAR WARS, THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK and RETURN OF THE JEDI, but these 35mm prints were acquired as copyright deposits in March 1978, October 1980, and June 1983 respectively. All three are classified as archival masters and as such cannot be accessed for viewing/research. The existing condition reports for STAR WARS and THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK (there is no report for RETURN OF THE JEDI) indicate that the former has minor scratches but is in good shape overall, while the latter has extreme color fading. We also have an additional 35mm print of the original STAR WARS (received June 1979) with English subtitles for the deaf. They will do what they are already doing with their classic films. Release them as special events and then say it's on sale for a limited time before it goes back into "the disney vault" thus drivng up sales. He hates them with a burning passion for some reason, and frequently insists that the redone versions were his 'real' unrestricted vision; even though the only differences are ridiculous things that have no real merit. According to popular theory, when Lucas released the special edition he did the cuts and edits to the original negatives, making it impossible to use them. This leaves only the Library of Congress versions of the original film in tact, and I don't see Disney going through that much effort. I thought the originals made it to DVD as part of disk 2's for each of the "special edition" ones. Basically the VHS movies pressed to DVDs. Or Netflix sent me some bootlegs a few years back. The Star Wars one, in fact, was just "Star Wars"--not "Episode IV: A New Hope." However, those are direct prints and aren't even anamorphic. A day later, I'm leaning towards this would be the time Disney would do it. They are known for the "limited time to get it then back to the vault it goes" gimmick. Reason I thought about this was I was tempted to get someone a gift of the entire sage but noticed with 9 blu rays in that thing why couldn't they add the theatrical releases? Personally, I think the only reason the originals were any good is because Lucas didn't have the technology to do all the stupid stuff he wanted to do. Well, that and luck. Basically the VHS movies pressed to DVDs. Or Netflix sent me some bootlegs a few years back. Several years ago, 2006 I think, the originals were released as part of a 2-disc limited edition DVD. Disc one was the most recent Special release at the time, and Disc 2 was the original movies. Or at least that's how they were advertised (unfortunately I didn't get them at the time). They were also released as a box set a couple years later. Although when the BlueRays were released they only printed the most recent special editions.
