Can't Get a Name

Recently, I've been naming my characters after Asari from the Mass Effect universe. Latest addition to the collection was a ruthless Sith Warrior named Nassana-dantius. Probably the only true Dark Sider I'll ever have. So, so far, I've really had little trouble using even known names from another Bioware IP (and the fanbases of the two certainly overlap!), or sometimes very similar variations thereof.

Oh, and no, Shepardcommando isn't one of my characters, though I've seen him and admit I found that one very well thoughtout.

You might want to try names from another series, I've had some luck with names for a specific race from Babylon5 tv series, but names from books and mythology should work too, as long as they are not too mainstream.

I was ecstatic to have had reserved Z'Ha'Dum a couple of days ago for my imperial zabrak sentinel. Unfortunately the game doesn't acknowledge multiple capital letters so it came out Z'ha'dum but still.

once again im gonna reiterate how this can all be fixed if they went with an ID Number system, it worked with great sucess in Phantasy Star Online, honestly the name registration is dated and seriously needs to go, give us an ID# for each character we make and let us have whatever name we choose without restrictions...

Agreed! Im also happy to hear someone referred to PSO!

Btw, PSO2 is super fun.

On topic: I too have had some issues with coming up with acceptable names for me. It does get frustrating when you sit there for over an hour trying to find a name no one has used yet..

I name all my characters after Russian literature, 19th century anarchists or 19th century socialists.

It seems there are few people educated in such subjects playing SWTOR, so I usually don't run into problems.

My main is Darth Bakunin, then I have Alieksiei Karamazov, Trotsky, Tolstoy, Kautsky etc...

I usually name mine after philosophers or political theorists. Ive got a Badiou, Zizek, Deleuze, Honneth, and Marcuse. Though I've been coming up short recently so resorted to other names like pow-pow, boss-man or Rimmy

I think there are more people educated in such things on this game, i remember trying wow a few years ago and was surprised when i was able to have Plato and Socrates.

I make all my characters have Star Wars sounding names - Jagoss, Lashriel, Malathari, Mashrien, Hasina, Sargonas.

Then again I am on an PvP-RP server.

A few months back I was away from the game for about a little longer than a month and in that time three of my characters names became invalid for some reason. As a subscriber I don't think something like this should happen until my subscription runs out.

But yeah I completely understand the frustration on coming up with a name. I hate coming up with names. I even have a book of names that I'll go through to find one. The last couple of characters I have created I had to literally go through name by name in the book to finally be let in game. If there is one thing I will not do is play a character with a stupid sounding name or a play on words like "papersmiley" or "healzyeah"

you really dont have to take the random name generator name as is. just delete or add a few letters to what you think looks and sounds acceptable. i have been doing this for YEARS in these mmos and have yet run into naming problems. the only issues i have had though was how to pronounce the names in voice chat.

also i have named one toon in every mmo i have played with the same name i got from the random name generator used in eq1. no one to date has ever picked that name. that name is now whom i am known by to numerous players in several mmos so i can understand peoples disappointment in not getting a certain name. if by chance i cant get that name i would just change its spelling so it would phonetically sound the same.

You'd be surprised to see how well some Russian names fit with the title :p

I mean, Darth Bakunin could totally be some Sith Lord from EU. Or Agent Trotsky. Or Captain Kautsky (not Russian though).

The only one that goes a bit too far is Master Alieksiei Karamazov, but I am a sucker for Dostoevsky

Oh, and I also have a Zabrak named Kaukonen, after Jefferson Airplane's/Hot Tuna's Jorma Kaukonen. C'mon, Kaukonen sounds very Zabrak-ish :D

If you use a name from any kind of show or series, it's likely going to be taken. Much like real life, there are a lot of John Smith out there. Google it, different people of no relation with the same first and last name. The unique combination of names that are 100% your own identity, is impossible. So while you may have a handle you prefer, chances are you saw it on some other player in some other game somewhere else in the world, or someone saw yours and got here first.

My advice, stay out of fantasy books, dnd, TV series, movie and any other kind of media exposed content for creating names.

Take the name of your cat and merge it into yours, or change the name of a fruit into a name... Retwa noelm...

In Star Trek and Champions Online they made a system like this:

Charactername@Playerhandle

so Bioware could make it like this

Accountname ( this one is hidden , do not share, this one is needed to login )

PlayerID ( this one is used to identify your player account it is like an ALIAS / cannot be used to login)

login would look like this:

Please enter account name:

Accountname > Password

Please select a PlayerID:

Nekochan

Please create a character:

Samostisha

Done...

ingame chat looks like this:

Samostisha@Nekochan: Hello people !

In the UI / Targeting

its only Samostisha.. that easy...

Copy paste some of those and voila :D Sry for the big column, nasty ctrl c ctrl v.

I am Álec Fortescue and I am happz with it. Especially with in-game font nicely covering the grave accent. Shame my name was stolen by a name squatter and i had to rename after transfers. That guy is not even playing.

Those "be creative" posts are so stupid... Sorry, I want to be able to identify myself with my character, not run around with a ridiculous name.

Stop telling people to use these letters. It's already a pain in the arse to type more complicated name. Trying to type special characters is even more annoying. Worst case, I simply won't group with someone because they had to use Luke or sky walker with a special character.

We can more creative than this. There is absolutely no need to use special text characters.

I've made 5 characters so far and not once did the name I created get shot down by the "already in use" error. Try being more creative.

Avan'Sallana

Ser'ashanteyla

Kor'mala

C'thanap

Just a few examples, yes, I like apostrophes in my names, and they all fit quite well in this universe if you ask me:rak_03:.

Don't know if this will help you with some ideas or not but for the two characters I use, the way I came up with their names:

Krahn - Playing Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II when I was younger really got me into Star Wars and I even wrote some fan fiction. For a cool name, I really liked Qu Rahn (the master that instructs Kyle Katarn) so I combined the first and second parts of his name, switched the Q to a K, and there you go!

Retep (Napp) - For this concept, I wanted to play Peter Pan if he were grown up and in the Star Wars universe...as a bounty hunter lol...so spell each part backwards = Retep Nap, I decided to add an extra P for the star-warsy feel (like "Fett" has two T's)

Before I lost interest in trooper class, I was also gonna make one named Gutter (as in Sergeant Gutter from "The Boondocks" :p)

Hope that helps...it is unfortunate that names are harder and harder to generate or guarantee (I'll never be able to make my Jason of "the Bourne Legacy" sniper or Captain Jack Sparrow the smuggler), I do feel for you, but hopefully you can figure something out from your hobbies/interests/culture/childhood that you can really get into and enjoy the game with :) best of luck!

Two of my characters had the original version of their name and then lost it during the transfers. The only way to keep my names was to use the special characters. One character's name was a real life woman's name, the other was a made up name.

I can second the suggestion to take a random generator name and alter it. I've sometimes done that when I've been stuck for a name.

Same for me.. back on Trask Ulgo I had Tressk and Erebos... had to re-name them when I moved to The Progenitor so just added the appropriate accent as I workded hard on using them names for those characters (which were base on SW RP group characters named used over 12 years) so now they are Tréssk and Erébos, now I know some keyboards are different but here in the UK the alt accent key is located to the right of the space bar so its easy to use whilst typing

I use a Latin word list usually, like the name of my main character - Vigilanis, it is a slightly differently spelling of the word Vigilans (there are a few other spellings as well) which is latin for Vigilant, there are some cool words in there, like Atavus which is latin for ancestor, Bellum is latin for war...The list really does go on.

Sorry to use that word again but just takes a little 'Imagination' really and a broader view as when you get a game with so many players past and present, a lot of 'cool names' that come to mind will have unfortunately come to a lot of other peoples minds too.
