ok guys as listed in the other thread here is a work around that got me back to 10mb/s

Thank you for your continued patience as we work towards a resolution.

Please try the following, purely for test purposes.

Click on your windows start menu, click on start, and type notepad into the search box.

Right click on notepad, and click “run as administrator”.

In the notepad, click on file and open.

Browse to the following folder:

C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc

Hit the dropdown list where it says “Text documents (txt), and choose all files.

Open the hosts file. It should look as follows (the contents of the hosts file are between the ***** lines)

***************************************************

# Copyright © 1993-2009 Microsoft Corp.

#

# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.

#

# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each

# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should

# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.

# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one

# space.

#

# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual

# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.

#

# For example:

#

# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server

# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

# localhost name resolution is handled within DNS itself.

# 127.0.0.1 localhost

# ::1 localhost

***************************************************

Add the following line to the hosts file, and then save it:

87.248.203.254 cdn-patch.swtor.com

Run the launcher again to see if this worked around the issue. If it did, it is definitely an internet routing issue, as the IP address listed is based in the USA!

It would be bad to leave the hosts file like this, as this is just a test, so you will need to reset your hosts file back to its default in the future by following the instructions in the following link:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/972034

keep in mind this might not work for all but it's worth a try.

I had no issues with my download. Sure, the speed went down to around 400KB/s at some points for a few moments, but for most of the download I was getting 3-4MB/s. I downloaded the whole update in less than five minutes. It seemed to take longer to patch than download.

I haven't tried the workaround, but I did get a good laugh.

After reading through the thread I noticed mine is doing the same odd stuff as quite a few others, with 1MB increments of x.23 and such. I just happened to switch over and watched it deduct a megabyte right in front of me. My download speed has been fluctuating from around 30 KB/s up to almost 200 KB/s. My usual speeds are around 2MB/s.

I've been trying to download this thing all day, and it doesn't even have any HK-51s to murder Cathars with. But at least when I get on I can look at our new paperweights in the galactic trade network on the fleet.

Oh EAware, how you make me wish I could pay my subscription in cash so I could wipe my butt with it first.

This worked for me. Went from about .17 KB/s to 1100 KB/s :)

I tried this method from the other thread and can't seem to make it work.

Which HOSTS file is it exactly.

  • hosts.ics
  • hosts.mht
  • Imhosts.sam

The one that looks close to it is the hosts.mht and has a little yellow picture frame like icon over the paper icon for it. but it is not exactly like it.

There is one that is exactly like this file but it is in a different location.

(C:\Windows\winsxs\amd64_microsoft-windows-w..nfrastructure-other_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7600.16385_none_6079f415110c0210)

Could the file location be different for 64 bit windows 7?

Also...

The only thing with this hosts file is that I can not for the life of me change the permissions for it and take ownership of the file and folder location for it. I have been trying to find a way to do so but every method I know of and that is listed on the net about taking ownership and permission does not work for these folder and files.

Edit: Was able to change the permissions for the file finally and saved the line in the file. Sadly though changing it did not help for me. I really hope BioWare fixes this issues so that i can download the patch at some point.

Edit: Well I figured out why this fix didn't work for me. The hosts file was not in the right location to begin with. I had to manually place it there then add the line for it to work. Now I am downloading the files extremely fast. A minute or two and I'll be done.

So if you all do not have the file in the location listed. Then just add it and it should work.

I see you fixed it later in your comments. It's possible to install windows on different directories or on different drives so c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts won't work for everyone. But the file in question doesn't have any extension and it's always in the system32 directory even if you're on a 64-bit machine. Windows 95, 98, XP, Vista and Win7 all have the file there by default but it doesn't get used often and is a good target for attacks - so it wouldn't surprise me if some security settings/programs delete the file.

I downloaded the patch around 10:30 this morning and had no issues so I guess I was just lucky. So sorry to hear all you guys are having problems. Don't fret too much as when it does get downloaded you probably wont want to play for a few days anyway because of the horrible performance issues. Currently keeping me from playing.

Thank you dude sweat.

The community for SWTOR is truly great. Sadly, it has to spend so much time making up for the developers shortcomings. I mean seriously, we got a patch that won't load, that when you do get it to load the shadows rather than being improved have to be turned off, campanion headslots don't work, and as a bonus they killed the GTN. After all that we rely on other customer for a work around to be able to play at all.

I can't express how disappointing this roll out is.

The speed was fine for me, it took about 5-7 mins to download the whole thing.

You guys just need better internet service, sorry to say but it's true.

I have a 50 mbps connection and it's always fine.

This clearly is not their fault.

Two things:

1. test your connection using speedtest.net to Austin, TX

2. if your having fluctuations, download pingplotter from pingplotter.com and find out where your problem exists.
