Why exactly is the logic behind Obi-Wan's action? It seems to be one of those details which ordinarily your thoughts can skip over quite easily, but once you actually try to analyze the detail you find it makes no sense.

 

If fighting with two lightsabers is superior to fighting with one lightsaber, then why don't Anakin (and most Jedi) generally fight with two lightsabers? Perhaps there is a shortage of lightsabers in the Jedi order. But this doesn't seem likely.

 

If fighting with two lightsabers isn't superior to fighting with one lightsaber, and Anakin (and most Jedi) fight with one lightsaber simply because they have been trained to fight that way, then it would follow that giving Anakin a second lightsaber would not increase his effectiveness. It might even decrease it.

 

Thoughts?

He gave Anakin a second lightsaber because he can attack or parry blows much faster, because Dooku uses Makashi, it is a lot easier to block his attacks as there is little kinetic power in his blows, if you can even describe his attacks as that.

Or you could just say "Its because he's the chosen one like many people would say" and many people would be happy.....(I never said that was my reason though)

It was better in that situation for the reason she stated, but when looking to put more power in your strokes or defend from heavy blows, 2 lightsabers is not beneficial at all, on the contrary. The same can be said for other situations.

 

What does confuse me however, is why Jedi don't carry 2 anyway, and switch when it suits...

I'd say that they only carry the saber(s)/staff that suits their personal combat style best.

 

It's the same reason why most mideval-type warriors only carried the one weapon that they were proficient with, rather than a longsword, rapier, shortsword, greataxe and greatsword into combat to change styles as they saw fit. (disregarding the weight/encumberance differences.)

 

You plan on using the techniques that you are most familiar with, and use your understanding of basic(or advanced) swordsmanship to pull you through any scenarios that may counter your preferred style(s.)

Not to mention that seeing Anakin switch from fighting with one lightsaber to dual wielding completely threw duku off. Its similar to the effect of fighting someone in boxing who's right handed, then suddenly switches to a southpaw stance. It takes a minute to adjust, but it only takes one punch for a KO.

Not every Jedi is necessarily going to be proficiently trained to wield two lightsabers at once.

I'd assume that generally, Jedi are trained to fight with a specific combat style to fit any situation they find themselves in. Sure, in some situations two sabers would be beneficial, but it's inefficient and nearly useless to carry around 2 lightsabers to fit a situation you'll likely never find yourself in. Thus, when the situation arose and another saber was available, he used it to his advantage.

 

Or, a Jedi fighting with two lightsabers just looks better in a cooler scene.
