Gaming on Retina Macbook Pro... My fingers are roasting

I just started playing this game on my new rMBP and noticed it gets so hot that my fingers cannot even type on the keyboard while playing because the machine gets so hot. I was wondering if anyone else was having the same issue. Edited by MasterPerseus

When I bought my Macbook Pro, the little magnet-thingy charger head seriously overheated to the point of burning my leg.

Got it to the store, was defective, traded the whole laptop. Never had overheating problems anywhere in it ever since.

If it is still in warranty, I'd try that, I play sometimes on my Macbook Pro when I am on the go and don't have such problems. Said that, it does get hot like every laptop, but not this hot.

How long ago was this? Did you bootcamp or parallel? And how did they determine it's defective? Thanks for your response!

Last year, but the overheating problem had nothing to do with gaming. Just said it to let you know overheating anywhere ain't normal on a Macbook Pro ^^

I left it with those Genius guys. One day later they called me, explained everything and in a few days I got a new Macbook pro (with all my data from the previous one in the new one for free, nice guys).

Nowadays I play bootcamping and with this non-defective MacBook Pro I get 0 heating issues anywhere in it. But as I said every laptop is expected to run games hot, precisely around 75~90º C in standard external temperature (293K or 20º C, don't knowhow this translates into Fahrenheit).

So perhaps, the issue is not the temperature, but the thermal insulation. Take it to the nearest Apple Store to get it checked.

Got it. Thanks. I ran a temperature check while in bootcamp windows during gaming and saw all 4 cores running at 90 plus celsius. This would be normal except...my fingers burn. Will check it out!

You welcome mate, and if it i still in Warranty, whatever the issue is, you won't spend half a penny :)

I would advise you to reread my post though. I fixed the mess I made with the numbers after you quoted it :D

You're running swtor in a virtual machine?

Try boot camping instead. Your computer won't have to run OSX, parallels, windows and swtor then

I tried bootcamp first, and the machine literally gets too hot for my fingers to use. I now have it open in parallels, and it's not nearly as hot, but still a little warm and has worse performance.

Macbook Pro doesn't get that hot you better call apple cause Macbooks normally have 2 fans working at the same time your device most be malfunctioning.

Jesus, just take it to the store. It won't cost you anything, there's obviously a problem as multiple Macbook Pro users have told you.

At this point it looks like you're trying to get a "lol who games on a mac?" troll going.

Been gaming with my 17" MBP for over a year with bootcamp.

Played STO these days almost every day. Used an external keyboard and mouse.

The macbook was gettin hot as hell and the fans were dancing tango. Was np though.

MBP is still running perfectly. Never had problems with it gettin so hot.

Are you using a Notebook/laptop Cooling Pad? If not then go buy one. Gaming on any laptop will heat it up. Some more than others. Its completely normal.

Cooling pad kept the bottom of the retina macbook cool, but didn't stop the keys from burning up. I'm a little further out from an apple store, so I called tech support this morning and left a ticket.

ROFL....

That will tell you something about how awsome Mac is. Buy a real computer.

Cause PCs never have issues...

I don't own a Mac or have ever owned Mac simply because of the higher cost, but i'm not naive enough to believe that PCs are the be all end all.

Macs tend to last longer, perform better, and installing Windows on them to play games.. I'd much rather have a Mac than a PC. I just don't feel like shelling out twice the cash unless Video Gaming was my job.

I bought a gaming laptop a few months back with a zalman fan cooler , it was running quite hot on the left hand side of the laptop but after about 5 weeks the machine as it where has burnt in and is now just warm. This is the norm with new computers and especially for gaming. Not sure about Mac's though.

Cheers,

I don't know of any CPU that is happy running at 90C. I'd have to assume that at hat level you are into thermal-throttling territory, and dangerously close to thermal shutdown. Something is up with your cooling system. Either the vents are blocked or the heatsinks are coming loose or you've got a dying fan or something. Whatever it is, you should figure it out and have it fixed before the heat kills some other component in the area.

I ran a temp check and the machine is running within temperature bounds, but I'm still feeling the burning through the keys, so I'm guessing it has something to do with the insulation, or thermal pasting. I'm returning the laptop tomorrow and having a replacement sent out.
