[Suggestion] More Imperial Capital ships than Star Destroyers.

I really enjoy the new cut scene when you approach Imperial Fleet, as there are a few more ships visible and it actually is starting to look more like a Fleet.

But there is still mainly only 1 type of ship out there. Yes there are one or two of a second type of ship, but honestly an Imperial Fleet in this era is going to have more than 2 different types of ships.

This suggestion is in hopes that the art department realizes we're bored of seeing a mass of the exact same capital ship, copied and resized.

The Interdictor class cruiser that was later turned into a Destroyer, for example. A ship that Darth Malak stole from the Republic and then took to the Star Forge to retrofit with more advanced weapons and make copies of for his huge fleet. Hundreds of Interdictors. There is no way every single one of those was destroyed and yet the Empire doesn't seem to have a single one at their Fleet.

that is just one example and it's biased towards the Imperial faction, but you can see where I'm going with it and rather than suggest 3-5 ship models for future updates, I'll let you fill in the blank.

I'm pleased that the development team is starting to pay more attention to simple things that a plyer looks at 5-20 times a day when they play, like the ships hanging around fleet, but I'd be more interested to see it taken a step further and actually see some inclusion of established Old Republic lore. It just seems to me that most of the ships in Knights of the Old Republic are missing from this game, and those are assets that are already in the company!

The two fleets don't have to look as rag-tag as the thrown together multi-class ships that the Battle at Endor Fleet does, but there should be some variation! It is a fleet, not a clone army.

Hmm. Just remember that the Empire is a huge fan of standardisation in almost all matters, and that they were preparing for this war for centuries. You're more likely to see a "diverse" Republic fleet, IMO.

True that, but a fleet should still have several different ship classes all the way from huge heavy-hitting battleships to small scout ships. Sending a Star Destroyer on duty that could be handled by a much smaller ship is wasteful, something an Empire should also be mindful of. Not to mention specialized ships for different needs that can handle their area of expertise much better than a standard design meant to do a bit of everything.

Which is why they send a Terminus-class frigate instead (the smaller capital ship). As for scout ships, there's the Fury-class interceptor (SI and SW starships), but they don't tend to sit in orbit a lot - they'll either be docked aboard a capital ship or out actually doing stuff.

True enough - but then, a specialist vessel would generally not be with the main battle fleet. It'd be off doing whatever it's specialised to do, or prepping for a mission. Unlike regular warships, the "fleet in being" concept doesn't much apply to specialist vessels, even if they're well-armed.

My problem with Star Destroyers, why the hell do we continue to see the SAME DAMN KIND OF SHIPS OVER 6000 YEARS from darkside users?!

I mean seriously. Empire in every incarnation has the same triangle shaped ships? Think they could of done SOMETHING different. I mean look at the movies. 1-3 its the Acclimator to the Republic cruisers, then the Star Destroyers. Empire in SWtOR and KOtOR, same triangular shapes. Couldn't find ANYTHING else different?

It's seriously retreading the same stuff OVER and OVER again in different time periods. A tad over done if you ask me. Honestly just poor development from the game designers. MAKE THE SHIPS SOMETHING ELSE!

Mostly because the galaxy is stagnant I guess. There's been little advancement for those 6000 years - people already have everything they need and use tech they barely understand, based on standard blueprints. When someone needs a new ship the first order of business is to check the records for any designs that fit the bill, then maybe customize it a bit if you prefer. Why research something new when there's no need and no new tech to put in it anyway?

But another Point. Between the events of SWtOR and Revenge of the Clones, the Sith Empire as we know it in SWtOR has been gone for over 3-4 milennia. You'd think that palpatine's Empire would have used a different design.

Like i said, crappy design and story writing IMO.

Well, on the same note, there is practicality to consider. There are not too many shapes that are truly viable in space warfare for frontal assaults, when you think about it.

A ship that has a "Pyramid shape" (If you look at it directly from the front, and supposing the pyramid is on its side) can maximize its DPS because if it gets in a battle that its able to face its enemy, it can bring both its left and right, along with its top and bottom turrets to bear on the target. If the target decides to get close enough where a broadside is the only option, its sloped design allows it to bring half of its arms to bear---Turrets from the top and bottom on whatever side.

MOST any other ship that doesn't have a sloped design that is frigate size or larger can only bring half of its weapons to bear, because without a sloped design turrets would get in the way of each other in a frontal assault.--In other words, most any ship that doesn't have a sloped design is only practical in a broadside assault and would be wasting turret space in a frontal assault due to its own super-structure/weaponry being in its way.

There are other alternatives, of course, but I couldn't really recommend any of them for your 3 largest vessel types. For example, if you had a narrow ship with turrets at the top and bottom, then you could bring all turrets on your ship to bear in a broadside----But this would mean A.) You don't have all that many turrets to start with because your ship is narrow and missing space for more turrets, or B.) You have a narrow ship that will break in half under sustained fire on the narrow portions (critical weakness in the nebulon-B frigate this). Of course, this would also only be a viable design in a broadside attack--Other wise you could only fire your frontal turrets in a frontal assault, as the other turrets would get in the way. I suppose you could angle the ship so you fired all of your top or all of your bottom turrets at the target, but this brings up other issues.

There are other alternatives, of course...But the triangle design is one of the most sturdy and versatile ship designs purely because it allows you to double the amount of firepower in a frontal assault(Cause you can use your left and right side turrets), would be on equal ground in a broadside with any ship that is made for broadside attacks, and provides enough superstructure to make it a sturdier ship then most other designs would permit.

TLDR: Triangle sloped ships are one of a few superior ship designs because they allow one to maximize turrets brought to bear in frontal assaults

One alternative would be a cone. That would have similar advantages, and would actually use less material. Though it would also have some odd effects with the shape of decks internally.

The most significant disadvantage, compared to the Republic classes with their hammerhead bow, is the significantly greater cross-section that the Imperial ships display in most profiles. How being able to bring more firepower to bear balances against being a larger target is difficult to judge. I wouldn't assume that the first is always an advantage, though.

  • 2 weeks later...

Love to see the discussion going on here. Hopefully someone on the Community Team brings this thread to the attention of the Art Development department.

We need more Old Repuiblic era ship designs! This game is supposed to take place int eh Old Republic.

At least the imp star destroyers look neat.

Pub ones are a bit bad.

We wish they just ripped off Home One.

Say what? I love the Republic Valor class cruisers more than Harrowers. Just imagine ramming something in space with that beast. Imp dreadnaughts just look like a crappier ripped off version of Star Destroyers.
