I really dislike Nar Shaddaa in SWTOR.

Nar Shaddaa has been one of my favourite planets from EU. I really hate the whole "Las Vegas in Star Wars" paradigm that SWTOR forced upon EU. Nar Shaddaa is a complete opposite to Vegas' glamour and wealth. It is a dark, filthy and poor place. All the fancy, expensive, colourful lights everywhere makes it look like Coruscant at night rather than Nar Shaddaa.

I know those that are "new" to the planet probably like the "Las Vegas" parallel but to me it is just annoying since it ruined the way it was previously established in EU.

I've got to say, I like Nar Shaddaa for the most part. They could tone down the bright signs and lights a tad, though. From what we know of Nar Shaddaa, it is somewhat glamorous on the surface, with crime and poverty in the residential districts and lower levels. It is like Coruscant in many ways, but it should give off a more "Run-down" vibe.

Just my "2-cents".

I liked Nar Shaddaa on a Bounty Hunter and Smuggler, they feel natural there, but for the other classes nar shaddaa feels boring.

As for the look of Nar Shaddaa some of the parts were glamorous you see it in Kotor 2 just not the rest, the quest areas you usually go too aren't rich looking at all.

Although I don't like Nar Shadda because it feels like just a reskin of Coruscant, I do like that it is a different part of Nar Shadda, the nice rich part rather than the slums they always show in the other games where it appears.

Thanks for replies everyone. :)

As opposed to Coruscant which is dark, poor and infested with crime in mid and lower levels, Nar Shaddaa is dark, filthy and infested with crime everywhere.

Well there are these fancy lights and holo trees everyone. Even Duros sector is full of them, which is (ironically) according to the SWTOR "codex" one of the poorest sectors of Nar Shaddaa.

I wouldn't mind if only "the promenade" and its proximity looked fancy but they just messed it up.

I'm not a big EU expert, but I think the time period is a factor in the shinier version of Nar Shaddaa we see in SWTOR. The Nar Shaddaa you may have read about in a novel was most likely set hundreds or thousands of years later, plenty of time for a Vegas-like NS to fall into total despair. It makes more sense that it was once a successful, prosperous place that fell apart over time than if it was always the same.

The issue is that Nar Shaddaa was always an awful, dirty place. In the KOTOR games it was one of the planets you visited, and was nowhere near as neon-shiny as it is in this game.

I'm not sure I agree.

You see a different side to Nar Shadaa than in SWTOR, but I think you get the dirty dark Nar Shadaa when you get into the bowels of the city. You get the neon Nar Shadaa when you are in the affluent upper parts of the city.

Perhaps the entry point should have been the bottom and you work your way up ;).

They were definitely channeling Bladerunner / Cyberpunk in their design, and that isn't a bad thing in my books.

Well that's one of the problems too. The brown-rusty glow is really bothering me. In every video game that Nar Shaddaa appeared so far it had black-grey colour tone.

It is not that I don't like Bladerunner, I love it... it is just that they shouldn't have messed up the previously established Nar Shaddaa.

I think Mako put it best, "Looks like they added more lights to hide the grime." The Hutts polished up the moon's surface with all the glamor and lights to make it more appealing to the less knowing traveler. As for the other areas, they still give off the "wretched hive of scum and villainy" atmosphere that it reeked of back in KotOR and Dark Forces. Which makes perfect sense because the Dark Forces series took place in the deeper parts of the city moon, and Kotor 2 took place in the refugee sector. So in the end, whether Nar Shadda was grimier or just as clean on the surface as before. It's as gritty and dirty as I last saw it where I was before in the other Star Wars games.

I prefer it in SWTOR, the idea that criminals that 'made it' and have pots of money are floating around on casinos above the criminal infested surface give it a lot more depth of character in my opinion.

I may be repeating myself since this is an old thread but I am not bothered about a few casinos floating in the skies. It the fact that all other regions are filled with all sorts of fancy lights and this brownish tone. I mean the game itself states that Duros sector is one of the poorest sectors on the already overall poor moon and yet there are these fancy lights all over the place.

From one of the poorest countries on Earth...

Point is, the Hutts and/or other criminal entities who run those sectors still see money to be made. So if putting a bunch of bright lights and neon signs up to entice the locals to spend what little credits they have, then yeah, put 'em up.

I have no problem with how the planet was designed... only the execution (another layout very close to Coruscant not long after finishing that planet).

Pyong Yang comparison to Nar Shaddaa is a very bad one. North Korea is a totalitarian state and the government cares about it and controls it. It is their prestigious capital and even in those photos only a handful of structures have neon lights. While Nar Shaddaa is basically one massive slum. It is true that the Hutts are wealthy and control the crime on the moon but they certainly don't care about the welfare of the casual and in great majority very poor population, much less how prestigious the slums will look at night. They wouldn't put lights in the casual sectors. If anything they would exploit them even more. Provide me some photos of slums with neon lights if you can and then you will have an argument. :)

I am not new to SW or Nar Shadaa and I really enjoyed. It is very distinct from the other locations, which have a tendency to become very drab.

I know they went for more of a bladerunner look, but there is something called artistic licensed and I at least feel it paid off.
