as a smugler, my companions seem to force me either into armtech or cybertech

but i wanna make med kits and stuff.

hence the question?

The way I understand it, yes, the bonus helps, but all it helps is they are more likely to get a "critical" as their effective skill is higher. So, say something has a skill of 100 to make. The higher your skill above that when you craft it, the more likely you are to get an "exceptional" result. So, when you have a companion with say Armstech +5 craft a gun, her effective skill is 105, a small chance. It's nice, but not a requirement.

If I am wrong about how it works, someone can correct me but either way, the bonuses are just that, bonuses... Make what will serve you best, and if your companions happen to coincide great. If they don't, oh well.

There are 2 separate bonuses: +efficiency and +critical. Efficiency reduces the amount of time it takes to finish a given task. It has no bearing on mission success or critical result. Critical adds to the chance to get a critical success for extra mats. Both of these are increased behind the scenes by the affection your companion has for you .
