As the title says, is it a required crew skill? Would I be gimping myself not taking this one?

Well, I'm taking Bioanalysis/Biochem/Slicing and the profit (THE PROFIT) from slicing usually evens out with low end biochem parts, as in blues. Sometimes I'll get a green box, and I save it up for when I hit the reuseable medkits/stims after I RE. The components for leveling aren't expensive, usually less than 500 per.

tl;dr No, as long as you don't always have 0cr.

I'm playing a Sage, lvl 37 atm, with Biochem/Bioanalysis/Slicing. Started with Diplomacy and got it to maybe around 100 before switching to Slicing for the creds. Some of the mats I definitely want from Diplomacy to make purple-grade items (re-usable stims, adrenals and med packs) for my level and at this point there are hardly any showing up on the GTN on my server, but when they do they're much cheaper than they ought to be I think. I expect to take Diplomacy again at 50 though.
