I was hoping this is a bug. I would have no clue why the Tautaun or Rancor mount is counted as Non-Playable Character.
It is just a MOUNT.
Dark side is a pathway to many abilities, some consider to be unnatural.

Probably because it moves around and makes more noise than a mechanical mount. The issue wasn't that they put an arbitrary limit on NPCs because they were NPCs. They put the limit in because of performance issues.
