True. But there are also ample ways for players to cope with such limitations, even today, with naming of characters.

Would more freedom be better? Always. Is it necessary? not at all.

Has the MMO community devolved to the state where it cannot or will not cope with any little challenge offered by an MMO and the constraints in and MMO? Must everything be packaged for optimal fulfillment of desire? Seriously?

Names can be just about anything in SWTOR, as in real life. There are probably 100s of 1000s of acceptable name combinations out there.

i pre-ordered. I played in the beta. I got in early access and reserved my character names then lost them all in the first server merge, and now the second. You all keep referring to yourselves as "us", but I am one you.

I will ignore the trolls from here on in.
Welcome to the club. I have been part of 2 mergers. Lost all but one of my names over the course of both of them.

Rename and move on.

Sorry. If you found them on Wookiepedia (and someone already had them), they weren't as obscure as you thought they were.

I wish people would stop berating the OP.

Names are important in games, for some people.

Personally, if I am playing an MMO and my character name is not one that I enjoy, I just can't enjoy playing it. Maybe OP is the same way.

If the name keeps you from enjoying the MMO, then you were not long for that MMO anyways. It would not be long before you found something else that kept you from enjoying it.

I totally get wanting to have a name that you like. I just think that it shouldn't be that hard to find one that you do like. If a rename is necessary, select another one that is to your liking. Tying yourself down to such limitations will only lead to disappointment.

Pick names that are uncommon, perhaps even unique to you then. That's what I have done and it has served me well for years in MMOs. I have a half a dozen or so that literally are never taken (even after years) in MMOs. I use them in MMO after MMO.

TL;DR be part of your solution, not part of your problem. Don't name your characters Fred and don't use names from the lore of the game you play, or from a Wikipedia of the game.

Protip: silent consanants works wonders. So does minor vowel manipulation.

Agreed!

Most of my names work with vowel manipulation. Many could be pronounced exactly the same, but are spelled differently. If I can't get "Kilora" I get a tad upset, but will move to another server until I can. Or, failling that, start making Male toons with my preferred male name.
