Well, people have their own interpretation of "dead"

For some, it could mean shut down, for others, it could mean a bad reputation, turning free to play less than a year, focusing on microtransactions etc...

I'm pretty sure there's only one interpretation of dead. It means, "no longer alive".

Your interpretation of dead is more like the weird sister you no longer associate with because she has pink hair and has a bit of a reputation for being a [word for promiscuous women]. I believe what you're trying to say is "this game is dead to me".

What the average forum members really means when they say "game is dead" or "game is dying" is that they personally don't like the game or have been told by others that the game is dead or dying. So we have a combination of opinion and sheeple that will continue to publish game dead threads forever. And not just this MMO, every MMO.

This is not however to say that said thread are not sometimes entertaining and worthy of some hosing down with electrons on the internetz.

OP, when they announce the shut down of the game.. THEN it's actually dead.
you're not a very good representative of those who say 'the game is dead.' you are also not a good representative of the 'average forum member.' you belong to the sub-set of forum members often referred to as "white knight" (among other things). i don't think you understand the message those people are conveying at all. for one thing i would image some people have different reasons for making this statement, so to say it could be summed up in 3 all-encompassing lines oversimplifies the problem. for another thing, you're putting words into other people's mouths. that's rude.

if you want to know why people say 'the game is dieing,' you should listen to the people who say 'the game is dieing.' if you want to know what the average forum member thinks, you should listen to the average forum member. if you want to know what a white knight thinks, ask andryah. if you want to know what andryah thinks, ask andryah. she should be quite adequate within those 2 spheres of influence.

by this definition, the game is without a doubt dead. no matter how much you like mako, neither computers, nor computer programs, could ever be considered 'alive.'

Can they? Computer systems can fall under most (or all) of those requirements in some way. But that's beside my point, as what I meant was closer to "no longer running/functional" than actually alive in the strictest sense.

And yes, we're both being pedantic, but it is commonly accepted as accurate to describe a car that no longer functions as "dead". I don't think it would be similarly accurate to call a car that still runs, even if not very well, "dead".

Actually I dont think there is.

To say a game is dying means that the severs will close and that there is little to no future in the game. What you said is more of an opinion on the current state of the game. For example you can say that turning F2P is a bad thing, but it doesn't specifically mean that the game is dying or going to get any worse. Take LOTRO, they went F2P and they still seem to be doing strong, as is SWTOR. Its more mixing personal opinion with the idea of a game failing because an individual is dying, rather then dealing with facts about the health of a game.

the game that was originally released was a subscription only game. you could say f2p is a new game, born from the ashes of the first game, which died. this game is not the game it once was.

you could say the 'heart' of the game is the content, and since new releases have primarily focused on the cartel market, that eats at the heart of the game. the "game" part of the game is dieing, and being replaced by the cartel market. there may be lots of subscribers and bioware may make a lot of money, but without a "game," i would still consider it dead (dead to me, or the life it once lived is dead, or something like that).

i think there is a decline in activity. i think there was likely a big bump in both activity and money being thrown into the cartel market when f2p first launched, but i think that initial frenzy died down. i think there was a bump with makeb as well. the reports people are linking to about new accounts and whatnot reflect these temporary bumps, which, imho, have not been sustained. if there is a decline in activity, you could say the game is dieing in the sense that if that trend continues without intervention of some sort, the game will eventually empty. i think there will be another bump where people check out what's new in the next release, so i doubt that scenario will play out, but still it stands to reason that if there is a decline that continues, the game could be dieing.

I think the game is pretty healthy and doing well overall.

Unfortunately, Jung Ma is pretty much dead, at least PvP-wise. Almost no Rated on a nightly basis and 30-54 Lowbie WZ Qs take 15+ minutes during non-primetime. 10-29 Lowbie WZs don't pop at all after 10p PST.

Yesterday I paid a visit to three of the starter planets. All had under 75 peeps. Last I was on them, they each had two instances round the clock. Dromund Kass, which used to have 3 instances at times, is down to one instance and just over 100 players. JM is in decline and BW needs to give those players a free merge transfer off to a PvE or PvP server of their choice.

Yeah, no what I meant was isn't the text I quoted about half a year old and more recent sources say that the game is in fact still very successful with player numbers going up?
