But the way it really works out is that as a one time show of appreciation, they gave you 500CC (without the need to pay an additional $4.99) on top of what the price of your subscription already buys you. Think of it similar to a store promotion where you get something free with a purchase of X. If you were going to purchase X then you got something completely free, but if you bought X just to get the free item, you really paid for the free item and got X for free. Either way you got something without having to pay extra for it (or more colloquially known as free).

I know my wife/son/family/friend enough to get them something they would like that is personal and reflects the level of our relationship.

Bioware/EA doesn't know me from a box of rocks. Look at it in that regards and all the going around in circles can really end, as it was the best bulk option to please the bulk of people. But at the same time, you don't like the free 500cc just say nothing. Anything other then a thank you (like the gift or not) is just rude in my opinion (my mom and dad raised me to believe a gift is never to be sneered at as I am entitled to nothing).
