Hello,

How does the commendation system actually work, I have gathered a fair few and am now level 20 but unsure what to do with these commendations

Is it logical to save them until you are level 55 or should I spend them as I go along?

There are equipment and modification commendation vendors throughout planets as you level. They sell orange quality armour and weapons (not the first few vendors) and blue type modifications. It's best to spend your commendations on the modifications as they'll keep your gear up to date as you progress through the planets. If you see an orange piece you really like you can buy that also. Try to accept armourings from any quests rewards as they cost the most from the vendors. Once you get to a higher level you can do the dailly flashpoint through group finder to get yourself 5 planetary comms per day. Doesn't seem like much, but it's 2 free modifications per day if you wish.

You should get enough that you can spend them In moderation and have a steadily growing quantity of the comms. If you do lots of flashpoints and heroics you should get 100 (the cap) many times over by the time you hit 50.

It is nice to have them nearly maxed out when you hit 50. There's no more free gear once you hit 50/55. Instead, there's a mod vendor on Makeb that takes planetary comms and gives rating 140 / level 58 mods. This is much better than the previous free gear for fresh 50's and will help you on your way to 55 and fill in any gaps for a little while at 55. (There's better gear through classic and basic comms, the next "daily comms" at 50+, but having the good starter gear can really help).

As mentioned use your commendations for mod upgrades as your go along. I would recommend trying to get adaptive or Custom orange/purple for your main character that you like the look of then just up the stats as you. go along with better and better mods. Even if you don't do flashpoints and dallies you can easily get 50+ Comms from each planet by doing most of the quests and many quest rewards will give comms as a option you can also grind some elites for a good chance to get comms in loot drops. I always choose comms as a reward unless the gear is useful for my companion. Don't be too bothered about having your companion in moddable gear green/blues are fine as level up for your companion.

Check out the Cartel market for offers on adaptive gear sets, I picked up a full gunsglinger type set for only 320 Cartel coins the other day as it was 80% off, well worth it. GTN prices for Adaptive gear can vary as its all about looks when you buy it, you can still get bargains though.

Adapative gear is basically shell gear when you buy it that has no base stats it is moddable gear that increases its armour value as you increase your armouring mod that you insert into it, unlike standard moddable gear that has a fixed armour value. So although to start with it may be low on armour value it s worth going for adapative in the long run.

There are comms vendors for each planet on the fleet both selling equpiment and mods, so always go to the highest ones to your current planet level to get the best ones you can use.

Its also well worth checking out the GTN before you go to the comm vendor though as you can sometimes get a real bargain if your lucky, although most of the time you will find armouring in particular pretty expensive credit wise.

In fact it is sometimes cheaper if have no comms left to actually buy a ugly piece of moddable gear and strip the mods out than buying the individual mods themselves. Seems strange but don't forget your partly paying for looks on custom gear aswell, so if it looks a bit ugly it will be cheaper.

There is a cap of 100, which you will hit before too long. If you don't have crafting alts to make all your kit, then it's worth buying mods to upgrade your gear as you level.

First thing you should do is get an orange offhand item from your capital world "specialty goods" vendor for yourself and your main companion, and a couple sets of cheap orange gear from a social vendor or off the GTN. Then you can just upgarade mods as you level.

The GTN is usually flooded with mods, so they're not really worth cashing in just to sell them. You can make plenty of credits just gathering and selling basic mats for crafting as you're leveling, so save the comms to buy gear you can use.
