I don't like it so I don't play on the weekends. My little boys do, however, so that's when they get to play.

I do agree there should be a button so a player can choose whether or not he wants to participate. Some people only get to play on the weekends.

I would be ok with this. (Should be subscribers only though, there should remain a good incentive for froobs to sub)

Vocal Minority? psh

I think you greatly overestimate the amount of people that think this is a good idea as opposed to a bad one.

People that post on the forums = the vocal minority just so you know....and the people posting in favor are on the forums as where most of the ones against don't post on the forums, and instead are playing the game (because they enjoy it as is) rather than constantly asking for it to be changed to their whims.

I'm so tired of the highly vocal minority proclaiming that it's somehow a bad thing that people should be given the option to turn off the double XP so that they can enjoy filler quests that they've already done dozens of times (unless they are a new player). There is absolutely no reason why you can't just enjoy this game all the same if there's an option to have 2x exp if you want it and an option to turn it off if you don't. If you really like optional non-storyline filler quests that much then there should be no problem to have that option so you can just go do them and not have to worry about getting overleveled, and thus still enjoy the content the way you want to enjoy it (and the way it was meant to be enjoyed).

And I get that some people want to explore every nook and cranny of a planet... but do you want to do that on every character? Probably not. So save yourself one character on each faction to do this... and you are good to go.

Protip: don't play a character that you want to "slow walk" through the planets on double XP weekend. Play an alt that you are more interested in getting to end game during the double XP weekend. Common sense, and you have the power to make the choices that benefit your play preference.
While I tend to agree with many of your posts, I have to come on and say yes - I absolutely enjoy exploring and completing every thing on every single one of my alts (which includes 8 on Live and 8 on PTS) - as do many of the people I play with. It's not about the color of the quest or the lack of XP reward when completing an outleveled quest. It's about the experience of actually playing through the quest on a different profession and build each time. So ultimately there is no character that we can play on these types of weekends without the option to turn off the XP. To be forced into gimping our gameplay (with the suggestions others have made - such as removing comps, lesser gear, etc.) kind of make the gameplay we enjoy pointless as well, and in the end it isn't something we should have to do because we are playing the content as originally intended.

Absolutely amazed this thread has reached this many pages, and most of it arguments between whether there should be an option to turn double xp off or not.

Bad title of the thread aside (as I don't believe that double xp weekends are a bad idea), the ability to choose not to earn double xp for anyone who wishes not to is a perfectly viable request.

I used the last two double xp weekends to level my Marauder from 24 to 50. I loved being able to skip quests and almost entire planets and get to 50 quick and get my free gear before it was removed. However, there were a few things that i had to overcome to do this:

1) Doing class quests and minimal quests only I quickly found myself lacking on planetary comms and unable to keep my gear updated as much as I would have liked. Fortunately I have a cybertech, so I was able to make my own armorings and mods and only use my comms to purchase hilts and enhancements and stay generally geared withing 1-2 levels of my current level. Without a cybertech alt I would have been stuck doing planets with gear 6-8 (or more) levels below where it should be. And those 5+ levels don't make up for that loss.

2) I missed quite a bit of the storyline to the game, as there is much more to the storyline than just class quests alone. The main planetary quests are just as critial to the lore and storyline. This wasn't a big deal to me as I already had 2 level 50s that I had completed those stories on so I knew them. I refused to play my republic toon for these weekends because I haven't yet experienced the full storyline from the Republic side.....so I did not want to miss out.

For those of you saying that double xp doesn't keep you from completing the grey quests for the storyline, you are right. However, completing those quests 5+ levels over where they are designed for greatly diminishes their difficulty and any challenge they represent and leaves the player feeling disappointed and anti-climactic.

I have no problem with them doing double xp EVERY weekend for the rest of the games existance for all I care....as long as they implement a way for me to counteract it or turn it off so I can experience the game as designed if I so choose. Anyone who argues against this is just arguing to hear themselves talk as it affects your gameplay in no way, shape, or form and yet allows millions of others to experience the game the way it was designed to be experienced. Don't assume everyone level 20 is an alt of a pre-existing 50. There are plenty of new players to this game every day and cheating them out of experiencing the game as designed is just that....cheating them.

Plus implementing a counter is easy enough to do in plenty of ways. If coding in a toggle for double xp is too complicated, simply put in an NPC I can talk to that gives me a "buff" that reduces XP by 50% XP with a 48 hour duration that persists through death. I can click the buff off if/when I want and talk to him again to have it reapplied. This would nullify the 2x XP buff and make things normal.

This could even help to allow subs with f2p friends level together more affectively if the NPC was active even outside of double xp weekends by making f2p and subs earn xp at the same rate.

100% player controllable of when they want 1/2 XP and doesn't infringe on anyones ability to earn 2x experience for powerleveling their 20th alt.

For me I'm an altaholic, I find the gross majority of the regular missions to be the same crap that is in other games where I skip the voice acting entirely. Double xp allows me to effectively level by doing class quests and pvp, the only two things in this game I like (although for me I'd also say the class quests for inquisitor and consular were largely meh). The normal way feels like a grind.

This. I love the fact I can go through planets by just doing class missions and 2 warzones per level.

I've been alting to experience the class stories, and honestly learn the mechanics of my advesaries in PvP land a bit better.

This is the easiest MMO ever, and likely the fastest levelling one too.

It's barely over a year old and if they need to rely on "double xp!" gimmicks already... it's not a good sign.

Double xps is no biggie to anyone doing content for the umpteenth time, but it makes the easiest game ever an all-out joke to any new player unlucky enough to try it out for the first time during one of these gimmick weekends.

I don't totally agree with this premis. It's a cakewalk up to level 20. From 20-30 it gets a little more difficult but not bad yet. from 30-40 it starts to really get challenging, enough that you need to be careful. From 40-50+ it becomes downright stupid hard. At least on the Republic side. The Empire side isn't nearly as bad though...
