I can only shoot as far as the jedi can jump... I find this utterly retarded.

Sometimes game developers opt for a less believable scenario like sniper rifles that can't hit targets past 35 meters in order to maintain game balance.
The only constant is change.

Imagine this, how fun would it be if Snipers were able to headshot people from 500m away? and if that were the case, why would anyone ever roll anything other than a Sniper? then, in that case they might as well rename the game to Counter Strike

It's a question of balance. If snipers could shoot people across an entire Warzone they would be OP as hell.
You might as well ask why lightsabers effectively function as glowsticks in swtor instead of cutting through everything.
