The idea that people are "getting over it" is completely untrue. While it is true it is becoming a more accepted viewpoint on most of the large communities, or something that's become the norm (in WoW it's most prevalent), there are far, far too many communities that have made the idea take huge steps backwards.

If you think ONE person saying something to you is bad, try playing Call of Duty and using voice chat for an hour. YOU WILL BE HORRIFIED. Try being a "real girl" in Tera, oh my god the horror you will face. When I started playing WoW when I was 14 I had bad memories from Gaia online, mIRC, and yahoo chatrooms, so when I started playing I did the same thing. I made a guy character and just didn't say anything. I was mostly about PvP and I was pretty good at it.

But the moment people learned I was a girl (using ventrilo for voice chat during arenas) It's like lots of people suddenly lost respect for me. I never cared if people called me "dude" or "bro" or whatever they wanted.

But really all females need to be aware that the places where popular marketing is most prevalent are also going to be the most sexist. A lot of the biggest communities have accepted the viewpoint that it's normal for girls to play games, so much so that they take it to extremes and that if you point out that you are a female they think you are whoring for attention (which some girls do) but guys don't understand what a girl has to put up with.

Just keep in mind that although there aren't very many places where it's still OMG A GIRL, they are HUGE places and HUGE groups of people, especially among young people who those games are marketed too.

I'm glad however that the SWTOR, WoW, Guild Wars, Diablo, and Dark Souls (there are more but those are the ones I've had experience with) communities generally agree that it's as normal as wearing pants.

Much like Lady Gaga, a lot of gamers don't wear pants when they play.

I don't care if you're male, female or other and neither should you.
