Hello everyone,

We are still actively investigating reports about consistent crashing to desktop during your game play, please reply to this thread with the following information:
  1. Name of server.
  2. Name of character(s) affected.
  3. Frequency of crashing – how many crashes, how often?
  4. Any potentially helpful information about crash triggers, what you are doing before a crash, etc.
  5. Your DXDiag in spoiler tags
  6. Your reliability report in spoiler tags
    • For Windows 7 / Vista:
    • For Windows XP:
  7. Please specify that this is indeed a crash to desktop, not a disconnect to server select screen or a logout to character select.

In an effort to keep your data organized and easy to read, please respond to the questions above in the same format!

1 - The Ebon Hawk
2 - Tzev'rin/Nee'kolai
3 - Random, a dew times today... maybe 4 or 5, in Warzones, on Fleet, questing in open areas - last one on Corellia.
4 - I turned my speeder. I performed a force leap. I entered a room.

5 -

6 -

7 - A few have been disconnects to server select. The rest have either been crashes right to desktop or crash to server select, then a few moments later finish crashing to desktop. I have never experienced this before in swtor. Before this past week or so, my desktop crashes happened maybe once every other month, if that often.

1) Jedi Covenant
2) all characters
3) every other day, never had an issue at all before 1.4
4) none known, seems to be random or can happen at any time

7) Random dc's are happening quite often as well (about 3-4 times a day), and yet I'm not disconnected from my voice over IP program and my browser pulls up a random uncached webpage instantly after.

1. Red Eclipse
2. Any
3. Every couple of hours, so I get several crashes per day. Faster if I do a lot of alt-switching which I do for crafting.
4. When the memory usage gets to a certain critical value the game dies. Activity can be virtually anything, though most common when loading a new area or character as the game then needs a large amount of memory all at once, but it can also happen when viewing the GTN or opening a bank or just standing doing nothing at all and a new speeder or outfit or whatever passes.

I am running on Vista 32 bit with 4GB of RAM. These problems started after 1.4 and nothing else on my machine has changed. I am not going to waste my time running diagnostics on my computer.

Thank you for acknowledging and investigating this issue, Bioware CS. We, the community, have also investigated the issue and are largely in agreement that the most likely cause of most people's crashing issues is a memory leak. Users of 32-bit Windows and/or systems with low RAM would more likely experience crashes as a result of this memory leak because their systems have less memory available to the game client.

32-bit Windows has an artificial hard-coded memory cap of about 3.5 gigs (may vary from system to system) and thus its users are more susceptible to crashes as a result of the memory leak. Users of 64-bit Windows with ample RAM may not experience crashes at all because their client can load significantly more data before crashing, despite the memory leak. Even if they do crash, they can play for significantly longer periods of time before they crash.

A similar issue arose earlier this year and was fixed. The issue was re-introduced in 1.4.

I have compiled the following list of threads in which users haved reported and discussed this issue:

4. Crashes in game, in instances, in the main menu, in loading screen, starting conversation, or even standing still. Also, when I´m logging out i recieve error about swtor not closing properly with a message "could not read" .I´m a founder, and it crashed like this since launch, glado you finally look at this.

7. Crash to desk, with no error message from windows, the games just freezes for a sec and then im in the desk, with the screen settings changued.

1. The Red Eclipse
2. Derimeth, Splendora, Rosaluxemburg
3. Roughly every two hours - although this varies depending on what I'm doing.
4. The most common trigger is loading a new area - e.g. leaving my ship, exiting/joining a warzone, changing instance, etc. However I've had numerous crashes when not entering a new area including multiple times in warzones and at least once in the middle of a boss fight in an operation. I originally thought it was the area loading that was causing the crashes but I suspect they are just common triggers because they push memory usage for the game up. Once memory usage goes above a certain point (approximately 1.7GB for the main process) the game will crash regardless what I am doing.

Another poster above has suggested this is memory related and I am inclined to agree. If I am very cautious and restart the game every 40 minutes (or as soon as I see RAM usage go above a certain level) then I can seemingly avoid any crashes entirely. That strongly suggests that some condition is building up the longer the game is running.

6. The vast majority of crashes do not put entries in my event viewer but this is the most recent example of one that did. I'd be cautious about saying the below is indicative of anything however since of the 60+ crashes I've had since 1.4 only two or three are in my event viewer log.

7. I can confirm that I am referring exclusively to crashes to desktop (and not other problems like losing connectivity or similar). The game suddenly stops running and I am on my desktop. If I am in the middle of something (e.g. a warzone fight) it's quite common for the sound to "hiccup" or stutter and I know the game will crash in the next 5 seconds. If the crash happens when loading a new area then I'll get no such warning and it's as if I exited the game very quickly (much faster than if I legitimately quit the game by the way). Windows does not report / catch any errors.
