afraid to try spaceship missions!

I've been playing the storyline and land-based quests with several characters but have never attempted the ones that involve my spaceships because, as I found out in KOTOR I and II, I am apparently tragically inept at these. :o Seriously--my husband had to finish the ones in KOTOR I or I never would have gotten anywhere...I got a little better in KOTOR II but really, my kid is better at these than I am. I seem to have terrible hand-eye coordination and can't lead a shot to save my (toon's) life. (Ironically, IRL, I can actually shoot a shotgun very well. Go figure.)

SO. I wanted to get a sense of how much the ones in SWTOR are reliant on you being able to shoot other ships out of the sky with you manning the gun, if that's all there is to it, etc. Any feedback on these missions is much appreciated! I'm a tad OCD and feel itchy ignoring them but don't want to venture forth if I'm going to be frustrated by my inability to do them.

The low level ones are fairly easy but just like questing. Shoot ten of these and 10 of these in low level u dont really need ship gear.but later on u need ship gear its always a nice break too do some space missions but its not all that hard but there is some thought/strategical in completing them sometimes and give good xp

Don't be afraid ... really, don't.

They are timed, so it's only 4-6 min of your life per mission.

There is no death penalty or repair bills at all.

You can do the first several easily w/o even having any ship upgrades.

There are single missions and then grouped rewards (do two single missions for one reward).

The early space missions are pretty good at training you. They really smooth out the learning curve.

The first is an escort mission where the shuttle you're escorting is like a Flashpoint tank, receiving all the enemy fire, and you're the damage dealer, burning down the hostile fighters and capital ship turrets in order to minimize the damage the escort takes and to keep him from being overwhelmed.

That's followed closely by a mission to attack an enemy space station, with very little return fire from the enemy. The main tasks asked of you are collision avoidance and budgeting to make sure you don't run out of missiles before you run out of targets.

They get more challenging after that, including harder high level versions of early missions, but the space missions in general are a good example of a well designed game that teaches the player how to play, in my opinion.

Edited to Add: You also don't need to lead your shots in the space missions. Good news, right? You know how in "A New Hope," Obi-Wan's ghost convinces Luke to turn off his targeting computer before firing at the Death Star? Your ship's targeting computer stays on. As long as you're within weapons range and your targeting cursor is on the target when you fire, that's a hit.

If you are terrible, just drop out after you fail.

All it will cost is the fuel cost to travel to the location, and that is a small amount of credits.

These missions are not like the ones in KotOR and KotOR II.

Just do not lose patience with the escort mission that thy start you out with.

It has a learning curve, but once you get it, you got it.

Buy some ship upgrades and make your ship a little overpowered for the missions. This will make it even easier to complete the missions.

Fwiw, I'm terrible at things like the space missions.....and I had zero problems completing them all with ease....until the last few.

Give it a try, it costs nothing.

Thanks to everyone who offered positive and helpful advice--I may give this a shot (so to speak)! Is there a tutorial during the first mission telling you which keys control which actions (unlike swoop racing, which just kinda threw you in there in KOTOR), and can you swap key bindings, x/y axis, etc. if needed?

like the guy above said...left click is your gun, hold and drag your right click to select targets for your missiles. mouse moves your ship around, and space bar is for barrel rolls. when you buy certain upgrades for your ship via fleet comms, you'll earn additional commands that pretty much just consist of the number keys 1-4.

i had the same problems in Kotor I and II - I had to get my 10yr old cousin to help me out because I was unable to make the Taris escape. Now, I have tried the space missions here and found them much better. The mouse-reliant control goes with my natural move responses and the early missions are fairly easy, IMHO.

Okay, so you are basically me. :) That makes me feel better. I'll set give it a go. And thanks, happysister, for the mouse advice.
