Did I hear this right?

Hall Hood: "When I can share more information, I will let you know."
Allison Berryman: "I can assure you again that the Community Team is well-aware of your concerns and is working to bring more information as soon as possible."

Joveth's remarks seem to be more subtly nuanced and,on the surface, seem to deny information is being withheld.

Joveth Gonzalez:"We know that at times, it can seem frustrating when we do not have new information to share, but rest assured that when we do, that thread will be one of the first places that we’ll update.
and
"...We actually do not have any new information to share with you at this time."

But then, looking more closely, we see even his statements are qualified. It's not "no new information," merely but "no new information to share with you.

It may seem like a stretch to parse statements so closely but with a paucity of solid information, it is pretty much all we have to do. What they all carefully avoid saying is "when we are permitted," or "when we may". A minor distinction but given that direct questions as to why this information is not available are never answered, it seems that the gag rule in place includes any mention of a gag-rule. Someone has put a lid on this and screwed it down tight.

That being the case, I cannot imagine it being relaxed for Hall's Q&A. But I think we can read such a lack of discussion as tending to support the notion that the discussion of this content is being deliberately blocked by someone.
My big question is WHY CAN'T THEY TALK ABOUT IT? Why the gag order? What is the big deal?

Do not attempt to understand the decisions of middle management. That way lies insanity.

It's likely an unfathomably stupid decision based on the idea that you can't please an MMO crowd and that secrets are a great way of getting people to keep p(l)aying.

At this point it seems that they are stringing along the player base only through contempt for the people but love of their money. And I mean that on all aspects of the game, not just this.

I'm most curious of the fact the Mr. Amatengelo was able to divulge this information without realising that it was not something to be discussed. That does rather imply that, at the time, whatever gag order is in place was only told to the Community Support team: i.e. the front line staff. Further that implies that whoever put such a restriction in place did not think that individuals unrelated to story content would be asked about this subject. Short-sightedness on the part of management and another display of just how desperate the community is for information.

I think that it was probably also issued to those working on the story content, and that since Gabe really doesn't work on any of that, no one had told him not to discuss it. My best guess, given what we can observe.

This also tends to indicate to me that those originating the non-disclosure policy are not really keen on or aware of game development environments, where someone on a totally different project is still so enthusiastic for the game as a whole as to remain aware of overall development progress as well as what concerns the player community has. So, as badly as the gag rule may speak of EA/BioWare, I'd say that Gabe could and did divulge what he did (in apparent good faith) speaks rather well of the studio culture overall.

I can see that.

Developers/writers/programmers: Yay! Lightsabres! Warzones! Stories! Stuff!

Management: What now?

Marketing: We can't possibly talk to the community. We'll do it. You go do with that... computer stuff.

Developers/writers/programmers (at interview): Stuff, talking about stuff!

Marketing: Why did you know the stuff? Who said you were allowed to talk with other departments?

Well, there is a good catch-all phrase for situations like this involving EA. It's called "Typical EA". So yeah, this right here is typical EA for ya. After 10 years, they're still acting really shady.

Let's clear up some misconceptions.

  1. This thread isn't making any sort of demand. It poses a question – whether it is possible to have a statement, made by a dev at the studio uncertain of the precise facts, confirmed. There are threads out there that do demand features. I can think of one for chat bubbles that uses words like "need" and "now" in a title punctuated with exclamation points. No one is doing that here. Please stop saying we are.
  2. This is content already slated for inclusion in the game. That is a call BioWare made over a year ago and, by all accounts, not even sustained letter-writing campaigns to EA from those opposed on principle have made them rethink their decision. Take it up with them if you find it objectionable, not with us. We have no say in the matter.
  3. The Community Team isn't taking sides. While personally I think that since BioWare has decided to include this content, the Community Team ought to say so and, where necessary, say why it belongs in this game, to date they haven't. Nor do they play favorites with forum moderation.
  4. Yes, this thread has been permitted to stay open. No, it isn't a duplicate, as it was really started to address one particular interview. If other people have made it into a thread about same-gender content in general, that's their doing, not mine, and the Community Team seems okay with it. I'll point out that it was those opposed to this content who derailed the thread.
  5. This content is looked forward to by all kinds of players. Men and women, young players, older players, straight players, gay players – there is no single demographic that this content is targeted to. No one knows how many players want it, nor will they until BioWare has the metrics to look at. Don't count on them sharing those.

I may add other points as they occur to me. If you are here to post in this thread, and have not watched the video interview linked in my first post, please do so. It will make it much clearer what the thread is about, what I have asked BioWare to confirm which, by the way, they haven't.

(had to clean this up - reposting.)

That being cleared up, I'll just mention that the stickied Developer Q&A thread for Hall Hood is still open for questions. So far, about 27% of those enquire about same-gender romantic content in some way. I'd say that's a perfectly a fair place to ask Hall about this interview and his odd non-confirmation confirmation.

Really, I would encourage even those who are vehemently opposed to this content to ask about it as well, so that the information can be put out there. It probably sounds counter-intuitive, but information is information - those who say they would quite the game over SGRA's being introduced should be given an idea of when they can expect to do so.

As far as I'm concerned, it's still a valid question to ask, and pray that either EA has lifted the gag order, or a BioWare dev has the guts to stand up and let everyone know for certain what's going on, one way or another. Any news is better than no news.
