Rolling need for your companions in flashpoints, acceptable or loot ninja?

I'm pretty sure asking beforehand with the group is the easiest way to sort this out.

There seems to be a general consensus to say "Hey guys, do you mind if I roll need for my companions if gear drops?"

Most of the time, I've had groups say "Sure, as long as no one in the group needs it."

I also re-iterate asking every time I'm about to hit "need" by just saying "Rolling on this for companion, just checking that's ok?" or something like that.

You can work it out as a group. It takes about 30 seconds, tops.

Further, this is going to be an interesting problem, as people might not "settle" on a companion until later on in the game. The one you have at level 10 might be entirely different than the one you're rolling with at 50 - so I think that until that point, companion gear is slightly less important than character gear, simply because the companion may change from dungeon to dungeon or level to level.

I have 3 companions so far, one wears heavy gear and techswords, one wears medium gear and blasters, the other light gear and sabres - does this mean i cna need on anything?

Nope i dont need on gear for companions, as it will get ridiculous with everyone needing every drop.

Unacceptable.

But it will be the life of PUGs, and if I ever have to do a PUG I will roll need as well...because I KNOW there will never be a PUG that comes to agreement on this, so why try.

Guild runs it's not a problem, we understand that companions are secondary.

Someone rolls need on an item they personally can't use gets kicked and ignored.

BioWare REALLY needs to limit need rolls to classes that can actually use it. EVERYONE can need pretty much every frickin drop in the game if the criteria is a companion can use it. Might as well just do away with need/greed and go straight roll/pass.
You are playing a frickin video game.
You are not hardcore by any reasonable definition.

Here's hoping BW won't have cross server flashpoint queues.

If everyone's localized on your server, you can just make a note of that player and kick him/never group with him again. Server reputations used to mean something; you and your guild will be recognized for your behavior and other folks will respond / ignore in kind. Works wonderfully.

I personally think need should only be rolled for your main character, and not for companions... I called the guy out on it, then after the instance he was flaming me in general chat for being a rage quitter or some such.

Opinions?
Regardless whether someone even asks first if they can need for their companion, players always come first not their "pets"

if somthing drops i want my companion to have i wait till everyone rolls, if there are no needs only greeds i will then ask the group if its ok, havent had a problem yet and this is how it should be done.
