Play one, then come back and answer your own question IMO. In reality F2P attracts all manner of freeloading sociopaths who play to make it ugly for people who actually really play the game. I wish it was not true, but it is.

The one positive about F2P is you don't have to listen to people whine about $15 a month to play, but they just move on to the next whinefest on their long list of things to whine about.

LOTRO did do one thing right in terms of forums, you don't get to post in the subs forum you have to post in the moochers forum.

I've played LOTRO since closed beta, and still play it far more than SWTOR.

I have found that the F2P change actually has made it entirely better in terms of getting the non-endgame things most people wanted. It is a different game. It is not hardcore. It is not an endgamer haven. And from what I can tell, the subscription model isn't helping that here anymore than it did in LOTRO. The argument that there isn't enough "focus" on endgame in LOTRO does not really hold up overall. Yes, there is a lot in the store, but hardly more than art designers put together. The core systems, new raids, etc, are a function of other teams. If there is a lack of something, you might blame the fact that they also add instances, and have, almost each quarter, fully revamped an original area of the game, making them scalable up to even the level cap.

Plus, they know what their players want, and most of them don't crave yet another 12 man raid. They want better Kinship systems, more decor, better housing systems, etc.

I'm not saying that leaving for lack of endgame isn't valid for you personally, rather I am saying that you can't pin it to the store. That is a knee jerk reaction people have, when the developers priorities don't reflect their own.

15$ per month isn't that bad. Having said that, there are some players out there that have no budget for games, and free to play gives them an option. What ever model we get, I just want there to be frequent updates as there has been so far.
A force of one, yes, the solo player!

Yeah, but to be fair, it's a very different player base. Some of them play this game, but many many that play this game do not play that game. Which is one reason it is so much more tranquil over there. Still.... freeloaders can really stink up the freebie zones, and do.

Your noting how that player base is much more community focused is indeed true. This game, at least so far, is the antithesis of that.

I am against the f2p model idea. I bought this game expecting no micro transactions and I want it to stay that way. It is not that expensive to manage. I don't make much but I can still afford this as long as I am remotely smart with my money. It just looks like bad news to me. Also I notice everyone mentioning the lack of content added but I like to remind people that this game has added a lot of new features since start and I am sure once we are happy with the new features then the new content will roll in. Every time I look on this site I see a new and cool feature being added so I would council patience. I would rather have new mission content after I am happy with the features to play the game. This is coming from a person who has found no enjoyment out of most mmo's and definitely the f2p ones. This game is doing some great things and I say we need to keep it p2p or risk this game turning into utter garbage with stupid micro transactions and who knows what else. Either that or find a way to make it f2p in a way that I can still p2p and wont notice any difference (which i dont see as very likely)

Free to play is good. Look at Guild Wars they kept that game pretty alive for many years. The model works, it has to be done correctly though. Look at guild wars content dished out. Tons of content patches and huge expansions.

$15 a month? in the grand scheme of things, its not even that much

Especially since full games are like 60 bucks, and most games are like 6 hours max, then it ends up collecting dust

This is why free to play is becoming a big thing, but i guess if this game went full free to play people would bails hip thinking the game has failed.

Well, I think it is a extremly superbad move. Based on a survey carried out by market research firm VGMarket in July 2011 for global payments company PlaySpan, owned by Visa Inc I present these numbers:
"...More notable statistics, however, were focused on the gender split. For both MMOs and casual games, women spent more money on virtual goods than men. On average, women spent $111 a year in MMOs and $62 a year in casual games, while men spent $74 and $28 respectively. Another significant statistic was the change in spending from the previous year. For MMOs and console/PC games, the average amount spent was up 20% to 90% year-on-year, depending on category. However, for casual games, the average amount spent was down in all categories, by between 20% to 60%. Overall, all types of virtual content experienced an increase in average spending year-on-year, while average spending on virtual gifts dropped from $30 to $23 per year."

How the hell do they think they will survive on those numbers? 111dollars per year is LESS than a year worth of sub (179,88dollar). They will gain even less if everyone is a male!

BAD MOVE!

Valk-Thank you. You beat me to it.
It was also logical to think bioware was capable of making a successful game.

I play LOTRO and this game.. And i actually prefer the f2p route.

Granted many won't like the idea; but in my humble opinion, it's the way to go. For example, in LOTRO at the moment, you can get the steeds for the various professions for your Turbine points, or cosmetics.

Would be nice to see some store only items in TOR, like some cloaks or boots.. or even perhaps a proto-lightsabre (the one with the cable attached to a power pack).

In every game, there is a knee-jerk reaction to change. But if Bioware make sure that there are enough incentives, more now story quests, I'm staying.

Also, in LOTRO, i purchased a lifetime sub, so I only pay for the big expansions.
