Anyone know the answer to this? Did they count accounts on their free month that they received from purchasing the game?

apparently if you make a thread about one thing no one else can make another about the same topic but with a different question.... Great job Bioware mods.

No what they are trying to do is to make something look like a reoccurring every day event that makes the event look worse than it actually is. It's the same tactics most advertising and even protest groups use to make statistics look more grave than they are to try to capture attention.

However it's not how things work, and IMHO people that are subscribing to it need to go get their common sense back.

Yes, and you had an active sub at the time when they announced the program. It even says that you had to have an active sub to qualify in the stipulations. So, there's no proof that any of these people unsubbed after the free month.

They said it does, in fact, include trial players.

Machts nichts for the current topic at hand...2.2 sold does not = 2.2 subscribers at that snapshot in time...if you just use the 30-days free then you are a subscriber for that period of time (30 days) IMO but those people never continued to subscribe so they left the game earlier...if you want to use the 2.2 million number then you would have to say that SWTOR has had cumulatively 2.2 million subscribers throughout its existence...the 1.7 million number was active at the time of the last quarterly report which gives us a basis of comparison quarter over quarter...I don't think IMO they have had over 2 million let alone 1.7+ million active subscribers at any one time...I would imagine many of the first box sales people left after the free month...

Now the 2.2 million sell throughs can be looked at in another light (attachment rate)...but for this topic the discussion revolves around the reported active subscribers...that's all I was pointing out...

Cheers....

Please note, it also doesn't include people who's 3 month subscriptions ended in mid April.

If you subscribed for a 3 month period on launch day, your subscription ended April 19th

Meaning Bioware could lose substantially more if they'd included that.

Frankly, this free month thing reeks of marketing to entice those 3 month subs back. Though I am surprised they gave me a free month when I wasn't a current subscriber.

But EA/Bioware had to have analyzed how many 3 month subs they had and determined them to be a significant portion they could lose (or people already cancelled and just rode out their paid time)

Honestly, I expect numbers to go lower after 1.2, not higher, due to the timing, and due to 1.2 not having ranked warzones and disappointing people.

The ship is sinking.

Stop denying, and grab a bucket, or a lifeboat, take your pick.

BioWare claim that subscriber numbers haven’t dropped, but concurrent users at peak times have. This, Erickson says, is the reason why players are noticing a lot of ‘light’ server populations – and also why mergers are on the cards, but not a priority.
Erickson better learn what the word priority means before he uses it. A lack of players at peak hours means a lack of individuals willing to play the game, which means most likely that individuals will see this lack of willingness as a lack of subscribers and follow suit and unsubscribe themselves.

If mergers are not a priority, that means Bioware isn't taking this issue as seriously as the player base is, which means that unfortunately, this game isn't as important to them as they'd like us to believe.

Until then, anyone projecting doom'n'gloom for SWTOR is basing it off very little evidence, as we have only two quarters to report... one with a massive jump in sales, the other with a lesser decline in subscribers. The third and fourth quarter reports will paint a much more clear picture. I say patience until then. If you enjoy the game, keep playing it. If you don't, well, there are other MMOs out there that may be more for your liking.
Losing 25% of your player base when they've been complaining for a year that the lack of content will be a problem is proof enough.

Since when is catering to "true mmoers" a recipe for success? Casual > hardcore market, just look at WoW. The true raiders were complaining when WoW got easier and easier, yet WoW subs kept increasing despite them. WoW on a whole was so much more casual then Everquest or FFXI, yet far exceeded both with subscribers.

This game is not perfect by any means, but it's hilarious reading comments of people who think 1 million+ subs is a failure or tanking. There hasn't been a single MMO since WoW in the west that has even managed to hit 1 million in their hey day, let alone after the initial drop off. And every other MMO at launch had a huge litany of problems, some never fixed, and they managed to endure for years. People are just so whiny nowadays.

No at the time of the report in February they had 1.7 million subscribers, not at the end of december, the number was different, and it was reported at one time they sold about 2 million units in december. So yes, they still lost about 300,000 players in from december to febuary.
