Not true. WoW and RIFT's addons run though an interepter (sp?) in the game, similar to how Java or Flash work in your browser. Whereas Warden was capable of detecting interferance from external sources and thousands got banned due to that.

Viruses in addons is impossible. It's not the virus carrying the addon but rather the container. Zip and rar files can easily carry a virus and Curse and WoWInterface are always on alert for them. Users also downloaded Questhelper from illegitimate sources... and those contained viruses. Curse's ads have on occasion contained viruses too, though Curse was quick to remove offending ads.

In my opinion, Addons are one of the reasons why WoW was so successful. Just one of many reasons. If you didn't like the interface, you could change it. My interface in WoW was so completely different from the original, you'd think I was playing a WoW clone instead of WoW. (I think it was ElvUI if you're curious) And that doesn't even begin to get into the new features.

SWTOR's bag interface sucks. It's complete rubbish. It serves it's purpose but little more than that. If addons came to SWTOR, the first thing I'd do is port over ArkInventory's management system.

Its pretty clear the Devs at this point don't want to allow DPS addons where we can see everyone's performance. Guess what, if they allowed addons they could still disallow DPS addons.

There are so many other uses for them that have zero impact on the game play of others.

GTN, Crafting, Threat Meters, UI Interface, and so on.

Don't come on here and oppose something you don't even understand.
Whoever created Threat Meters should be fired. All these dumb-downed add-ons takes away any challenge and skill. PvE is getting to the point in most MMOs (thanks to Panda-Land/WoW) where a child can excel in.

If you want a casual and non-competitive environment you need to find a group of like minded individuals who don't care about personal performance

However, If you want to play with a competitive group who actually cares about performance you'd better be prepared to utilize all the tools available to help AND your team win.
Basically this!!

its been quite clear for months that a large portion of the player base do not want or require third party programmes in the game . i would say its a large enough portion of the player base to stop it ever happening . if you want mods , go play a game that allows them . simple solution imho .

I agree with every point you have made.

The main opposition I have seen here is just "I don't want it, so you don't get it either" type of mentality.

Making a game more accessible and customization will attract a larger player base.

I don't ever remember getting things handed to me in WoW, I just remember it being a lot more accessible then this game.
I actually heard a complaint during the event boss bantha thing, "enrage timers are so vanilla wow" that just proves that babies are wow players, whats wrong with an enrage timer that they had to be removed from wow? Can't handle realizing you don't have the dps for something?... that is why people that never played wow think wow players are sad, whiny, pathetic. Whatever you wanna call it. It's a stereotype for a reason, kinda like watermelons and fried chicken.

No need to dumb it down. You have to be an idiot to lose threat in this game as it is It's not hard to keep threat.

I think you hit the nail on the head. People are whining about how they don't want addons in the game cause it "dumbs down" the game, but addons are NEVER required. I know guilds in WoW that never raided with any kind of threat or DPS or assistance addon installed.

If they don't want it, they don't have to use it. If someone else wants it, they can use it. In my opinion.

This is like whining about god mode in single player games. Yes, it makes the game easier for some players. Yes DBM and Omen made WoW easier for some players. But you don't have to enter the god-mode cheat. You don't have to install DBM or Omen.
